Random Commanders Thoughts

Exactly zero times.

The longest drive in NFL history was on November 27, 1997 when the Tennesse Oilers manufactured a 20 play 90 yard drive against the Dallas Cowboys that chewed 13:27 off the clock. Even at the collegiate level it's never been done, as the record there is 14:03.

It doesn't have to be one drive. It could be 2 or even 3 drives, where the other team turned the ball over whenever they received a kick.
That's certainly not out of the question.
But my point is, not how frequently it happens, it's the fact that there's no provision for it, if it does happen, the way OT has that provision.

Still hasn't ever happened. The lowest time of possession by any team in a single quarter is 17 seconds by the San Diego Chargers on January 11, 2008 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And they ran a couple of plays.

But my point is, not how frequently it happens, it's the fact that there's no provision for it, if it does happen, the way OT has that provision.
I know, but in regulation you know that no matter what the entire quarter is being played, so you scheme a lot differently in OT. Not only that, but there's no provision for it during regulation because you play 4 quarters. You only get 1 overtime.

I'd prefer minimum of a standard possession for each team with kickoffs.

Look - the current system (stastically) shows that since the new model was implemented the team who wins the toss has no clear advantage. It doesn't matter whether they do or they don't. I think that is because it's hard to score a TD on a single drive with two evenly matched deadlocked teams. My point is that when the first possession does result in a TD, I think it's unjust for the primary reason I've stated - because it means the outcome was decided by just one unit of each football team. Why not remove any sniff of inequity by giving each team an offensive possession?

OK, so old school sudden death it is. ;)

I wonder if Rivera really believes in Haskins.

Picking Turner seems to be at odds with best preparing Dwayne for 2020.

RGIII run at 2:36

And at 1:42, Denver winning on first play of OT in 2012. Thought that was interesting given some recent discussion.

RGIII run at 2:36

Kirk is not impressed.
He did not vote for that, as the best Redskin play

Starting to wonder that myself, you'd think they woulda gave KOC a raise to continue Haskin's progress if Rivera wanted both. Hell he may want to part with DH as well

I'm not sure I would read into which OC is hired as a statement on Haskins. For long term team continuity, wouldn't you rather pick a coach you know, feel comfortable with, and are sure they share the same philosophy and let them work with the player? Who knows what happened in the interview process. Maybe KOC didn't wow him enough to get over the hump of working with someone you know better.

My first thought also. the football clown parade continues in "ole DC".

forget trust (what will be the duty response)...this is Rivera taking care of the buds.

who the eff do these people think they are fooling?

well...let's all learn the Panther's fight song! I will be laughing my rear quarter off if Carolina has a better record over the next few seasons.

So what do we want? Haskins having a better 2020 or the team as a whole improving over the next 3-5 years?

And if Haskins is such a fragile minded QB that he cannot handle a new scheme, let's flush it out and be rid of him while we have a chance at a top QB in the draft.

I think it's less about KOC as it is Rivera wanted his man. He liked what he saw from Turner in his time at Carolina, there is a small body of evidence to prove one way or the other for either Turner or KOC with such limited time in charge, so Rivera chose his guy. I know if I wanted to hire a front man for my business, my first stop would be with a guy I know and trust. Haskins needing to learn a new offense wouldn't be my most important determining factor.

I understand your resistance to be excited about the coaching change, the Redskins have been a laughing stock for a very long time, but this is one of those statements that has absolutely nothing to support it but your intuition. Jack Del Rio's hire alone should be enough for you to know that this isn't all about Carolina Panthers nepotism.

My question is...what do you know about Scott turner vs. Kevin O'Connell? Does Scott Turner suck? Do you have some insight the rest of us don't?

Or is this a narrow minded idea that Haskins will be damaged so severely by the switch from one OC to another OC, who run a very similar style of offense, that he can never learn a new scheme?

I remain cautious, I am still not sold on Rivera as the answer to the 20 years of futility in DC, but the idea that our NFL QB will not be able to handle a new OC is one I just don't get...if he cannot make the adjustments, maybe we need to flush that out now. Maybe we need to move on. this isn't about Haskins, it's about the team as a whole.

For once, I like that there is a long term vision. The easy hire would have been to appease the Redskins' fans and keep an OC that really hasn't achieved anything in the NFL, for a guy our coach likes better. At this point, we do not know if it's the correct move, but it doesn't feel like nepotism to me. It feels like a guy putting his stamp on his rule.

You're already spewing and the coaching staff isn't fully formed yet?

Wow.

Nope.

While I agree with BD that this is a bad sign for Haskins.....my point is much simpler. Scott Turner hasn't accomplished a xxxx xxxxxx xxxxx xxxxing thing in his entire professional career. he followed his dad and was forced out each time daddy exited stage left. this is so obviously the buddy network in play that it makes me want to puke. Rivera has already played his hand and shown who he is. I predict more boring pressers and 4-6 years of mediocrity followed by another firing.

Rivera won 53.7% of his games while at Carolina. That equates to 8 and 9 nine game wins a season on average. His teams routinely start off slowly. He had a strong season in 2015 and hasn't accomplished jack since then. He was fired for a reason. Lack of production. He is not an onnovator in the Joe Gibbs mold. But he'll have the accomplished Scott Turner, who "earned" his OC role, by his side. I'l like to be sanguine about all this. But right now, I see it all as a low key farce.

Snyder cleaned house. Unfortunately, he has hired a group of care-takers.......for the next coachng staff in a few years. Prepare to be bored.

Redskins fans talked the same shit about Kyle Shanahan way back when, that fansince is talking about Scott Turner now.

Ponder on that as you watch Kyle's team in the divisional round this weekend.

Come next season, we'll see if Rivera's gamble has merit.

Call it a well tuned second sense after all these years with Snyder. Plus, I took the time to look at what these people have actually accomplished as coaches and where they are coming from in the recent past. I was hoping for an innovative, young offensive mind.....you know kinda like when we hired Joe Gibbs...who would be paired with an experienced DC. INstead we have ole school crappola (my opinion, of course) that will have a predictable outcome: competitive football with one or two strong years that will never rise to greatness. book it. it's as obvious as all get out to me. As noted, Rivera has shown his hand. Turner! LMAO.

Guess a sample set of one wins the day. Look at Turner's friggin record. nothing. there's no scuttle-butt on this great talent chomping at the bit to succeed. there are no opposing DC's opining about what a fine strategic thinker and planner we hired..or how well he adjusts at crucial moments. nothing remarkable at all in his record or reputation. there were no other teams even thinking about hiring this kid far as Google searches go and current media releases. this is so obviously the pal netwok in play that it defies imagination to think others can't see it.

Wonder if a real GM would have hired Turner? Think Snyder may be overly clever in this? He knows if this fails the blame will fall almost exclusively on Rivera. Shanahan actually was an innovative coach - even here. And he was surrounded by other quality offensive thinkers including his dad and mcvay. Shanahan's problem was his fractiousness and proclivity for spinning the truth in directions it did not want to travel. what has turner accomplished? what is turner known for? what in his record makes one think "yea baby, we got an up an comer!"? NOTHING.

Well, the wait for the next Joe Gibbs caliber coach will continue. Just goes to show how unique he was - and how spoiled we all were!

I may be talkin shit - but I note in passing that you had not one positive argument in support of Scott Turner as OC. God I hope we we don't have to endure Norval-like interviews!!!!

Al, what has KOC done differently than Scott Turner to make you think he's more accomplished...worked with Haskins?

Kyle Shanahan was called a product of nepotism while he was here. What had he done?

He was the OC in Houston but everyone knows that was just BS because it was Kubiak's show. No one gave him credit for anything here.

KOC was here for a cup of coffee. Bill ran the show and we'll never know if he would've been a find or not.

Scott Turner may very well be a bust. Can we at least let him call a few games first before we label him though?

The only one in this conversation that has any clue what Turner is capable of is Rivera. He coached with him. What ‘favor' might we possibly imagine he owes the kid or Norv? There's only one thing I would hope we could all agree on, and that is that Rivera will want to succeed in DC and must have seen something in Turner that impressed him. He's certainly as experienced as KOC who was slapped with the wunderkind label simply because a couple of other Redskin coaching youngsters have had success. It's hilarious. Losing KOC is disastrous but hiring his doppelgänger in terms of experience is a disaster? This is a nonsense debate.

Thing I'm optimistic about is that hiring Scott Turner shows Rivera is in charge.

Snyder could've went to Rivera and said something along the lines of "Things went bad with his Dad here, don't hire him...it'd be weird...etc"

That didn't happen here.

And for all this talk of "Snyder's set up Rivera to take the fall if this all goes south" BS.... Didn't Rivera say he was betting on himself?

It's not like Rivera's getting blindsided here.
