That's the yin and yang of this situation.

I predict a close 27-24 type win over NY which will have Gruden crowing about getting going in the right direction only to have this team get totally dismantled by New England the following week.

The Redskins are capable of beating NY or Miami and luckily for Gruden they are two of the next three opponents.

But as I indicated when we face ‘real' teams, ie those not in the bottom 5 with us we are a double digit loser.

Whether they admit it publicly or not the players know Gruden is in the dying gasps of his term as head coach and at least to me it appears part of the disjointed play on the field is attributable to the internal team crisis everyone is feeling.

Gruden of course set the table for his own execution by having this team open the year as prepared as Steve Spurrier used to have his teams prepped 😆😆😆😆

It doesn't help when Rob Ryan says this should be a top 5 defense and Josh Norman says this defense has the capability to be great and after 3 games is ranked #31 or 32.

It doesn't help when Rob Ryan is even on your staff. Gruden sent that guy into retirement. I can't believe he let him back.

We need to protect Haskins from himself. He's going to come on thinking he can do this.. but when you look at the roster and our positioning, there's no real upside to putting him in. Don't get him mixed up in this explosion.

Right now Jones and Murray don't have much more on their side.

They are starting with questionable offensive lines and awful defenses.

In NY with no OBJ due to the trade and Barkley due down to injury Jones doesn't have a great group of stars to work with.

Gruden's system is right up there with Al Saunders' 700 page playbook back in 2006.

What a mess.

The Redskins won the Super Bowl against Miami with 4 running plays with shifts/motion offsets and a passing game designed to accent hitches and WR screens and the occasional deep throw off play action.

Brian Mitchell said Reid's offense in Philly was much the same.

The number of plays and range were less important than being able to execute the plays that were in fact called.

Talk of the ‘system' being an obstacle comes shortly before the coach gets fired.

Whether you love/hate Snyder, Allen or Gruden the denial that encompasses this organization is truly amazing.

Super Bowl?

This team finished 1-6 last year allowing the equally bad Giants to score 40 straight points in one game.

In the offseason you pick up a journeyman qb in Keenum who has one standout year on his record to start.

Assuming the Redskins do what Gruden wanted in not taking Haskins at #15 , this team returns McCoy behind Keenum, a career backup.

And THIS was the roster makings of a Super Bowl contender?

Poor Jay. He doesn't see the forest for the trees.

Landon Collins didn't come to DC in 2019 to win the Super Bowl. He came here because Washington hit him up with an $84M contract offer after the Giants passed.

Now Collins may have come here with the thought the team could win in the future but not this year.

I can't find one credible former player or coach that thought Washington was a strong playoff contender let alone a team that could reach the Super Bowl.

The staff on this team quite simply doesn't have a history of winning anything that's why they don't know what to look for.

Rob Ryan says in preseason this should be a top 5 defense only feeding into the hype.

Can you remember Gibbs or any winning coach or assistants front running like that and prejudging the performance of their teams publicly?

Poor Gruden. The only 0-3 team in the conference and still telling us the season is not over.

Well, if these guys do what they have been doing without any changes that's almost a guarantee there will be no turnaround.

And no, beating NY and Miami while losing 45-0 to New England and twice more to Dallas and Philly does not count as turning it around.
 
Wasn't LaFemina basically let go because he told Dan "Look... this is gonna' get a whooooooole lot worse before it gets better, so we have to be ready for that."

They really think they can win now. They probably won't even win Sunday and sure as hell won't win next Sunday.
 
Agreed that beating NY or Miami doesn't move the needle for me either although no doubt Gruden will use a win over NY to trumpet that we are moving forward.

It only means we are facing BS competition that is down at or near our own pathetic level.

It shouldn't be lost on folks that the other two teams with really poor play by the numbers in the NFC, New York and Arizona are starting their rookies as they realize they will not be contenders in 2019.

The two teams carrying delusions about the season?

The two teams coached by the Grudens and owned by questionable personalities.

Jon Gruden is also spewing about rebounding and overcoming their start.

The only thing their Week 1 victory over Denver showed was that Oakland was slightly better on one night than an 0-3 team with as many problems as they have.

But Gruden has to tell Mark Davis something for the $10M he is banking.

Getting a win or two here and there to stay ahead of tanking Miami is a cause for some solace.

Sort of like the Detroit Tigers fans relief when they got to the mid forties in victories so they knew they would not be challenging the 1962 expansion Mets record for futility 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

This is not Gruden's fault. He's in the last year of his contract ... year six. He's not thinking about years down the road.

This was noted by several prominent members of this board in the offseason. :) Gruden needed to be extended or fired after last season. Drafting a QB in the first round generally indicates a team in rebuild mode. Keeping a coach with one year left in his contract generally indicates a team trying to win now.

With this team, the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. There's no coherent long-term plan ... and here we are.

That's not on Gruden. That's on Snyder, or Allen if you want to blame someone who may actually get fired some day.
 
I agree. I thought Gruden should have been fired before the 2018 season.

Allen has poisoned the well enough that no name coach was going to come here in the offseason, especially with the Smith injury and the cap hit there.

All I am trying to do is make believe I woke up in September of 2019 and watched the first 3 games of the season and was asked what is apparent?

The preseason assumptions by everyone in the building including Gruden and his assistants were that we had a team that was going to compete.

Rob Ryan talked about having a potential top 5 defense.

Gruden certainly didn't do anything to temper the front running players like Norman that talked about being such a talented group.

So now at 0-3 and looking like a team that can't get out of its own way maybe it's time to change the assumptions based on demonstrated evidence.

The Redskins not only lost the games but were generally embarrassed.

If I am the owner I now say we were collectively wrong and we need to move on to Plan B.

One national commentator said after 3 weeks the Redskins are already coming close to being irrelevant for the season outside of what Haskins means for the future.

The ironic part to me is Gruden wanted Montez Sweat and was upset when we passed on him at #15 so the Redskins found a way to get back into Round 1 to grab Montez.

But Montez Sweat so far looks just like Dwayne Haskins, namely a young raw talent that needs to be developed.

Sweat may help Haskins and the Redskins make the playoffs in 2021 but he isn't going to elevate this team in 2019.

So, Sweat can play and learn along the way in 2019 but we have to continue to play a veteran quarterback when we are uncompetitive?

Again, I am flexible as a fan.

I thought we needed a reboot but these guys didn't.

Fine. Now we see a reboot is indeed necessary so we need to adjust our approach.

To continue along with the ‘the season isn't over' BS doesn't fly.

Not given the circumstances.

Unprepared and overmatched teams don't all of a sudden become contenders.

This isn't a team that was 12-4 last year and is merely starting slowly.

This team finished 1-6 and is now 1-9 in the past 10 games.

That's who this team is.

Put McLaurin on IR and save him for whoever is running the team next year

This is a spot we part ways on.

You know I'm not a Gruden fan. Been one of the one's calling for his head for 3+ seasons. And damn doubtful about him since his rookie year.

But in this instance, he is 100% correct. The season isn't over. And as long as he's the head coach, he should say that.

BTW, I'm not saying your wrong, but I don't recall any reporting on this. Is this your opinion, or did you hear it said/reported somewhere?
