Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

There's no doubt that Sims looked like a potential hidden gem last year before he got hurt. We haven't had that kind of athleticism at the position in a long, long time. But we really haven't seen him against top-tier defensive talent, only in meaningless preseason matchups. I hope he can show the kind of skills we saw last year in games that matter. He was raw, and at times a little undisciplined, but man - he is some athlete.

I'm not nearly as down on our WRs as most. Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know they are unproven. But Quinn is a nifty little player who, if he can show some durability, can be productive. McLaurin is going to be a good one. Harmon is physical as hell, is a capable blocker, and has great hands. And that may open things up for Richardson now that we finally have a QB who can throw a deep ball with some precision. Add in CT, Reed, and there's still the chance Doctson could step up in a contract year. We may surprise some folks.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Granted, northern VA isn't exactly Texas or PA when it comes to youth football, but it's dying here. John is right. If the NFL isn't careful the pipeline is going to dry up.

My oldest played in the Upper Loudoun Flag Football league about four years ago. There was maybe one tackle league for every 4-5 flag leagues. It's really drying up, big time. He played that one season, then went right back to Taekwondo and wrestling.

Yeah, he has taken a bad spill or two wrestling, but not anywhere near as bad as football can be.

Speaking of WRs...

He made a couple of rookie mistakes in pre-season last year that could have cost him a position on the team, a couple of them resulted in a turnover, either a fumble of interception. But he also made the talent he was against look poor, and got some time with the first team last year where he also excelled at times.

If he's healthy, I see him contributing, greatly to the team.

I will be surprised to see Richardson contribute much at all. 3 out of 4 seasons in the NFL he's been injured and missed significant time. I did not like signing him, I think he's a bust, and I doubt he's on the roster by the end of this season.

I like Quinn, he is going to replace Crowder in the slot and be just fine. I don't think we won't miss much with Crowder gone. Again...unfortunately, it all depends how he recovered from his injury. He and Sims both seem like the types that will work hard to make it happen.

I think McLaurin will have a special rookie year just because of his relationship to Haskins, not that he is not capable on his own...I just think Haskins gets the nod to start the season, ticket sales and all, and they have a relationship already.

And I think if it weren't for the Holcomb selection, Harmon would be the steal of the draft for us. I like him.

But....and this is a huge but...there is still no veteran presence and I don't like that. We should have a vet who can show, not just teach/coach, these kids how to play the position.

A bunch of Redskins news popping early on a Friday morning.

So Thor has us with the third overall pick, huh? Does he know who the new coach will be too? :)

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Every year we hear the dire predictions and the Redskins hover around .500. There's no way we pick top 5 in 2020 with the talent we have on this roster.

If we were going to move on from Gruden soon, it needed to be after last year. Makes zero sense to draft a new QB and have him learn an offense he won't use for more than a season. Starting over in year 2 would be a serious negative. You either believe Gruden's development as a HC has been hamstrung by several years of crippling injury or you don't. I'd extend him now and remove that issue. That's probably the view of less than 5% of fans and critics but I think it would provide stability and maintain forward progress. If he can't make this team a perennial contender with the talent influx and a talented young QB in a few years, then move on.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'd extend him after the team makes the playoffs. Not until.

Healthy or not, the man can't spell "Plan B" if you spot him, plan.
His clock has 72 seconds in every minute.
He has the quickest "We're doomed" posture of any head coach I remember.
And I still don't think he could lead water over the falls.

Basically, I've seen little, to no improvement as a head coach. Only more excuses used by his more ardent supporters.

"What we do works"...……..Deja vu all over again?

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

You're just making my point for me. I understand the POV that he isn't a good HC (although I think it's somewhat unfair). But if you were going to can him the time to do that was before the season. I'm not sure how fair it is to have an ultimatum ‘make the playoffs or you're done' is in a season where you will have a brand new QB under center.

I don't know if that ultimatum has been given but if so it doesn't make a ton of sense. I don't have a problem with applying some pressure but ultimately you either believe he's a good HC who's had a ton of obstacles get in his way or you don't think he's much of a head coach. If he's not much of a head coach expecting him to make the playoffs with a new QB is a head scratcher.

Of course it's possible he's dead man walking already and this is just Snyder not wanting to have to pay two HCs for a year.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Well, full disclosure, I've advocated flaying him for 3+ years.

I suspect he's safe. As giving our young QB stability is indeed the preferred route. That, and Snyder's wish to change his knee jerk reputation. Which he has pretty much done.

But I remain firmly in the camp that even with a healthy roster, he only inspires a 50/50 chance of success.
I said it last year, and I'll stick with it. He, is the weakest link on the team.

And, for the 5th year in a row, I hope he proves me wrong.

I am Hennery the 8th I am.
Hennery the 8th I am I am...…...
