WORLD CUP 2010

Holy smokes...wishing I'd ditched work now. BALLS!

Let's put this one away boys, why stop now?!

Man, what a difference between periods! We're attacking, and Slovenia's starting to look a little disorganized. Go for the win!

Who is watching? Supposedly terrible call to wipe out the go-ahead goal for the US. Offsides on Edu.

The officiating is blowing chunks. They just took the game winner off the board for a phantom off sides and totally ignored Bradley being fouled in the box.

Clearly it's time for FIFA to institute instant replay.

Refs. Can't live with them, can't flay them alive and feed their innards to the fish.

That is really frustrating. If it were only the one call, I might be more inclined to be gracious but it wasn't just one call. Or two calls.

The US tried to give it away in the first half, then forcibly took it back in the second only to have the ref give it back to Slovenia. Sad.

Who says? The trick is not getting caught but it can be done. Trust me.

US needs to beat Algeria by a bunch of goals, so if Slovenia ties England, we'll win on tie-breakers (goal differential I think). Or, if England beats Slovenia, and we beat Algeria, its all good.

Or, if Algeria beats England by some miracle (maybe the ref of our game will help them out too?), then if Slovenia wins its no big deal.

Yeah, even given the botched call on the go-ahead goal we're in a better position than I thought we'd be in to be honest. I was seriously worried about this Slovenia team-they're good. We've established that we are capable of mounting 2nd period comebacks...now if we can start preventing those quick early goals...

Seriously bummed I couldn't catch the game (nor even follow it on the web). Sounds like we played flat as hell the first half (or perhaps Slovenia was underrated) and rose to the occasion in the second.

Need to research where it leaves us (your all's comments have me a bit confused?)....does a win against Algeria put us through, or do we need to win and have help?

A win does the trick Boone. We currently control our own destiny.

Sweet sweet music to my ears :)

As is damn near everything Brother Bob says...

In a totally hetero kind of a way. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Some entertaining matches today -- very surprised Cameroon didn't come out as the winner as their offense seemed to totally outmatch the Danish defense. The game was a clean one too, very few fouls and stoppages and some beautiful passing. A lot of that had to do with pretty lazy defending, but it was still a pleasure to watch.

Looking very much forward to Ivory Coast-Brasil tomorrow!

Wow, upset of the tournament so far, New Zealand shocks Italy (and the world) with a 1-1 draw. Italy needed a pretty shady penalty kick to even it up, or else they'd have lost.

Seriously - the refereeing has been atrocious. Is it always this bad? Horrible.

Algeria did us a huge favor by tying England. Win and we're in, baby! Feels like 2005 all over again. I hope there's a Sean Taylor diving into the endzone moment for US Soccer!

I thought the officiating in the Australia/Ghana match was bad. Struck me that one official in particular seemed to particularly enjoy pulling out the yellow card (and did so repeatedly). My feeling is, as soon as you start noticing an official, that's a pretty good indicator that they are becoming a bigger part of the game than they need to be.

Exactly right. I think that particular official is known for pulling a lot of cards.

The worst part is, half these cards are dives or embellishments - its a shame sports at this level have dives.

True but you have to love the fact that the refs in soccer can give cards out for the dive itself. So nice to know that great acting be rewarded just like a foul can.

I actually think there's much less 'acting' and overly dramatic tumbling than in World Cups previous. Most of the yellow cards I saw involved players getting beaten and getting taken down from behind. I don't know whether that warrants an automatic yellow card or not, but it seems to me there can be a lot of difference between a little minor over-aggression from behind and brutally knocking someone down who beats you enroute to a scoring opportunity. What I'm seeing is, they're yellow-carding it all regardless of the context of the moment.

Maybe I need more education on what constitutes a 'yellow card' scenario.
