I still see this year as regression. We'll see how things fare next season, but I have little confidence in light of the track record of the current owner.
And let me clarify one more thing for those not following my overall understanding of this team...we need Kirk, we have to sign him to a mutli-year deal.

Is $24M to $25M a year too much for Kirk? Nope. Here is why.
The cap will continue to accelerate quickly each year. Here are the current projections:
2017: $168M (up from $155.3M)
2018: $182M
2019: $195M
2020: $210M
Any contracts signed now by Cousin Kirk will look extremely affordable next year and even more so in the years to come.
After 2020 there will be a new CBA and the cap starting in 2021 could hit $240M according to some reports and possibly top $275M in 2023. Give Kirk a six year deal and it could look unpalatable this year, but bargain basement in 2023.
In other words, don't get hooked on the numbers for 2017.
In other words, part deuce - give some credit to Scot, Bruce, and Eric for good cap and team management.

I think that no team signs a QB to the tag 2 years running if they don't view the guy as a franchise QB who they have every intent of signing. This is all about leverage and posturing for the best deal from both sides and nothing more.

My gut says Kirk is gone. He has a lot of leverage. Something has happened to sour his attitude toward the Redskins. He will say all the right things about wanting to be here, but my guess is he wants to go play QB for Shanahan.
Most pundits say the only real trade partner we have for Cousins is SF. I would love to see someone like Denver or the Bears jump in and raise the price.

Kirk has been acting that way, since long before Shanahan was even rumored to be the next SF coach.
Antonio Brown just got 17-18 mil/year depending on being there 3 or 4 years . QB contracts are going to be insane.
What's funny is the same media guys that were praising the Skins for tagging Kirk last year(being cautious,making sure he's not a fluke) are the same ones kvetching now about how they should've signed him long term last year.

Agreed totally.
And arguably, the only thing that has changed one year later is the year on the calendar. Outside of that, while Kirk experienced some great success in 2016 , he's still had his share of those "wtf" moments over the course of the year where that doubt on the part of management should still exist to an extent.
At the end of the day, 25 years of futility doesn't ease the process of making a decision in regards to Cousins. I think the front office recognizes that we can't screw this up. Had we not been such of a dumpster fire in recent history, you can afford pushing all your chips to the middle of the table and saying definitively that Kirk is our guy. If it doesn't work out, your fan base will be more forgiving. We're not afforded that opportunity unfortunately. Hence some of the indecision and uncertainty in terms of knowing how to proceed with Kirk.

They can tag him this year, but next year he can refuse to sign again, and wait for the opportunity to hit the open market, since he's not getting tagged 3 years in a row.

Only thing that makes sense to me right now is the same thing that made sense the day the season ended ... they'll slap the exclusive franchise tag on him tomorrow on the deadline, then use the remaining time until July 15 to try to come together on a long-term deal.
Both sides already know within digits what the magic number to sign him will be, so the only remaining possible mitigating factors will arise out of what happens between now July---how FA goes, how the draft goes, what the overall NFL landscape looks like in terms of other possible QB, etc. I think both sides will wait to see how all that plays out between now and say July 10, then spend the last five days going cross-eyed looking at the small print of a flurry of faxes back and forth. Which makes sense from both of their perspectives and is probably the logical scenario.
Unfortunately for us, that means another four and a half months of media and fans breathlessly rushing from one side of the boat to the other depending on the prevailing winds.
