Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

If he wants out we should make it happen, like Champ Bailey dejavu. I'd say a 1st & 3rd in trade oughta do it. Between San Fran, Cleveland, San Diego, bears, Jets etc someone will play ball.

Also makes sense to why a deal or even news of one hasn't been mentioned.
 
Former Redskins official = Mike Shanahan. That one is easy to spot. Especially coming from Reid who I believe was one of the guys Shanahan would leak to.

I was going to say that this guy won't let anything go. But then I remembered his son is now in SF and looking for a QB. So putting out rumors through your lackey in the media must be his tact to help his son.

I think this is half of the equation. The other half is that Cousins only serves to benefit from incubating the idea that he's willing to go elsewhere to get the contract he believes he needs/deserves. I think Cousins is all about the money right now. I don't necessarily blame him. But as to 'where he wants to be', I have to believe that is highly malleable and a secondary factor for him.
 
So we basically have from now until March 1st to decide on which franchise tag right? Seems the non-exclusive one is the way to go. Basically keeping him but letting his agent seek options with right to match or terms of trade.

Suppose we'll know the direction it's being steered within the next 2 weeks. That's a good thing one way or another imo
 
The one thing to keep in mind is that outside of the Jets and Woody Johnson who love to spend money, the other teams 'in on this' including the Rams and Kroenke as well as the 49ers and Jed York are NOT teams that spend freely.

With San Francisco you could run into trouble on both ends, with Jed York not wanting to offer a 'max' type deal and John Lynch not wanting to give up big-time consideration in a deal.

It's a shame the 49ers pick is not in the 10-15 range because I think that could work. But I don't see the 49ers giving up the #2 overall pick for Cousins.

And the Redskins need help in 2017. Taking a #1 pick in 2018 and say a #3 pick in 2017 may not be attractive enough for the Redskins.

Colt McCoy is 31 years old and while he has leadership qualities and good mobility, is a guy with limited arm strength.

He can't make some of the throws that Cousins can make. One of my concerns with playing him in 2017 is that our red zone offense may be as poor as it was in 2016 with a qb that can't really attack the end zone effectively.

I agree. My dad is in town visiting and we were talking about this very thing. Cousins saying "I want to be here and nowhere else" gives leverage to the Redskins to tell him to take a hometown discount. He's doing the right thing by keeping quiet. The Redskins are doing even better keeping quiet, which is quite a change. I love the fact this negotiation isn't happening through the media. I'd love to see something get done soon. It will stop all this speculating.

This whole situation is a fail on McL if we don't sign him to a reasonably decent deal. GM's are supposed to identify and sign talent when it's in the best interest of the team. They could have locked Kirk up to a below market deal that would have been easy to shed if he didn't pan out.
 
So, maybe what he sees as in the best interest of the team, doesn't jibe with folks, whose job title is not GM of the team.

That's true to an extent. First thing to remember though is that McCloughan didn't draft Cousins. He inherited him. If he perhaps thinks Cousins has reached his ceiling, it would be a fail for him to facilitate a long-term, extremely expensive contract. I happen to think Cousins is worth every cent. But I'm not Scot McCloughan. I don't think it's particularly fair to throw out the 'they could have locked Kirk up to a below market deal' stuff - that's of course obvious after Cousins has shown us a 2nd straight year of record-breaking (if less dazzling overall) passing. Heading into this season, had McCloughan signed Kirk long-term and he'd been below or even average, it would have been just as easy to second guess him.
 
I thought the team tried to sign him to a favorable contract (for the team) last off-season and weren't able to come to an agreement. It takes two sides to make a deal.

Why would Cousins accept a lower than market price offer anyways? I wouldn't. It seems like Cousins has all the leverage except for protection in the event of a significant injury.
 
Watching ESPN's "NFL Live" and they're getting ready to discuss Kirk fwiw.
 
Wasn't anything new or earth shattering, basically from the 2015 off-season. Covered how he drives his grandmas van, his football camp in Virginia, and he & mrs dog charity.

Then went to Jason Reid mentioning rg3 as starter drama, team blew Kirk off, team didn't appreciate/hasn't created goodwill towards KC. Other commentators went with the uncertainty stuff we're all seeing. Basically wasted my time not getting something to eat.

I think a lot of this for Kirk, may be simply about being appreciated. Money being a prime motivator seems to be a bit of a dichotomy from what we've seen of him. Of course, he wouldn't be the first to be other than he appears. I think he's a highly emotional guy, to his detriment in games at times, and I can easily see it being about that. If the team is not willing to pay what he can get on the open market, I can see him taking that as a slight and moving on. All conjecture, of course, but that's my take.
 
If it is heavily about appreciation then that ship has sailed, hasn't it? He will take the team's 24m this year (if tagged) and find a new romantic partner next if not signed to a new deal or traded, providing he performs well enough again. IMO, if he doesn't have a new deal in place by the start of next season, he will be somewhere else in 2018.

I agree, so if plan is to tag and watch walk next season then why not trade and get some return.
 
Because the idea that he simply feels unloved may be entirely a media fabrication, that's why. Did he feel unloved last year when fans were chanting 'We like that!' at a gazillion decibels?

I just don't buy the idea that Cousins feels 'unloved' or 'disrespected' in DC - makes zero sense. Gruden stepped up and benched the most celebrated QB this team has ever drafted in favor of Cousins. The team and their fans have generally shown nothing but love for Kirk.

I think this is all about business.

They can still tag now/soon and not only see what his value is to other teams, but also still have until July 15 to strike a long-term deal.
 
This is all about the money, a sign and trade would be awesome, but only if its for a decent pick or an all pro player. we simply dont have the upper hand here. Cousins wants money and hed be foolish not to get as much as he can, and we arent in the position to overspend on a qb until we have a better roster
