Redskins Defense

With three games left, is there anything that can be done to shore up what we do have to work with?

Is Joe Barry even capable of doing it?

Kerrigan came up big when it mattered most but for a large portion of the game today, the defense was an embarrassment.

Made you cringe watching it.

Any hope for this side of the ball?

Weren't we practically eliminated with last week's loss?

no we are only half a game out and 3 to play. If NO can win today we have the number 6 spot again and if Dallas wins tonight we could end up with the 5th spot if everything goes our way the next few weeks. Yuck did I just say that? Now I'm gonna throw up

My observations:

1. They can let Shawn Lauvao remain on the inactive list for the remainder of the season. Arie Kouandjio is not perfect, but he is a tough-nosed player that will hit you and move you when he uses the proper technique. Lauvao is a limited player whose only real asset seems to be his knowledge of the playbook. But you have to be able to execute the plays to be effective. Shawn has been less than that this season.

2. We need to cut down on the number of deep outs and sideline routes we run (such as the one Kirk got picked on) and start to implement some of the WCO throws such as slants and middle of the field plays for the TEs that are the staples for other clubs.

With Reed, Davis, Garcon and Crowder we have the players to own the middle of the field and allow these players to get RAC.

The Patriots own the field with that type of attack. You hit the bang-bang plays and get RAC and there are no pick sixes.

3. Chris Thompson needs more touches. More rushing attempts but also more opportunities for him to do to opponents what David Anderson did to us in Arizona. His speed is right there behind DeSean on offense, and defenses have to respect that.

4. Our defense doesn't have overall unit talent that is high. But the coaches IMO have not gotten the most out of a number of players that we do have. Preston Smith and Mason Foster have been all but invisible in recent weeks in the front seven. These guys were impact players coming down the stretch last season but seem lost game to game in 2016 and the assistants don't seem to have a clue how to improve things.

5. As a corollary to Point #4, the Redskins defensive scheme doesn't work because it considers all playing positions to be 'equal' on the field. But the players occupying those positions are not in terms of experience, talent, and impact on the field.

We can't continue to go into seasons and games thinking all our safeties are interchangeable and can do the same things. Duke Ihenacho is a strong safety, that's the position he played for the Denver Broncos, starting the 2013 Super Bowl. He is a good tackler and has good size to impact the run game near the line of scrimmage. What he is not is a guy that is going to be able to cover Zach Ertz 25 yards down the field.

So, we have to admit that we have both free safeties AND strong safeties on our team and account for them in the scheme as such.

Ditto for the cornerbacks. Not all corners are created equal. We are paying Josh Norman $75M to be an impact player. We are fooling ourselves by thinking we can go into key games keeping guys who usually line up on the left side there regardless of the opponent. And equally so on the right side.

There are some receivers Bashaud Breeland can't cover even though they may line up on the right side opposite him.

We then need to make a switch.

If we have to go man up with Norman and zone off the other half of the field, then that is what we should do. Richie Petitbon did that all the time when an opponent had a singular best receiver and others that were merely solid or average.

These are merely things we can do as the season runs down over the last 3 games in the regular season.

For 2017, we really need to consider who we are signing, drafting and trading for, based upon the schemes we are going to run.

It seems like there are a number of draft picks and acquisitions that while they could be solid players are just not performing that way in THIS system.

It wasn't the defense. They let them coast to the 14 and sniffing distance of another TD, just like they did for practically the whole entire game. Kerrigan came through and won it single-handedly.

Yeah he beat a fourth string right tackle. Kudos to Kirk for the clutch drive. Although his pick six necessitated it.

I just want to kick the guy who is making the decision to defer the kickoff. We are inviting a loss by going on defense first. Very aggravating. For much of the game I felt we were getting the can of whoopass handed to us.

I think what FanBoy meant was that the defense despite all of its shortcomings only gave up 16 points.

Recall that the Eagles got 6 points on the Kirk Cousins pick-six on offense.

So, while the third downs didn't look that great again and we gave up some plays down the field, we didn't give up any of the back-breakers like the Eagles did with the 80 yarder to DeSean Jackson.

I just want to kick the guy who is making the decision to defer the kickoff. We are inviting a loss by going on defense first. Very aggravating. For much of the game I felt we were getting the can of whoopass handed to us.

I might be in the minority but I prefer us to defer.
Number of reasons.

I'd rather try and get the stops while the defense is fresh and establish an identity early. Stop the first drive, score on ours and put them on the back foot.

I also don't trust our D, and really don't trust it to win a game for us, especially when you consider how good our Offense can be. We can be a quick strike O and as such we can win games without necessarily winning ToP.

I also really like the knowledge that I've got the ball post half time. If we're leading it's a chance to extend. If we're losing it's a chance to close the gap.

Doesn't always play out like that, but that's my preference.

I don't like this game. I feel the Bears and Giants are wins, but this one seems like a matter of which Panthers team turns up.

Chicago had better be easy.

I expect the Giants to drop 2 or 3 of their remaining games too.

Across the league this has become the standard...you do your best to be the last to score in the first half, come out with adjustments, and score again. It's the right thing to do. Our defense held them to 3 on the first drive of the game, that is not bad...even if 3 and out would be better.

The sign of a bad defense is when opposing teams, week after week, time after time within each game, are totally unafraid and unhesitant to go for it on 4th down against us. Even if it's as 4th and 3 or more. Or even if they're deep in our territory and within field goal range, and when the game is still close.

The fact that our third down defense is the worst in NFL history, should put any fan on edge when it comes to just winning a game, much less making a playoff run.

Because 2 of the last 4 years we've seen this team go on a tear to end the season and earn a playoff bid with a sub par defense.

Don't remember us being historically bad on third down in any of those years.

Philly came into this game,bottom in the league in third down conversion on offense and we made them look like the 84 Niners today.

When teams are now getting used to going for it on 4th down, in their own territory, vs our defense....ummm, that's not a good sign.

Opponents do not respect our ability to stop, well, anything.
