An obvious part of that is that it is on the QB to go to the hot read. Kirk doesn't do that or there isn't a hot read. We should have ate that up all day.
 
Wanted to make a couple comments on the coaches. Usually, the head coach won't entertain any ideas of firing a defensive coordinator even if its deserved. That's the loyalty part of the coaching fraternity. Gruden would have to be ordered to do so, So Gruden will have to go with him, then of course throw in McVay. It could come unraveled in a hurry.

Seems to be a likely outcome in the near future, as our defense is beyond fixing. We have only one impact player on this whole team, that's Norman. The rest of the defense has to be playing for jobs, and there's probably 4 keepers there, but they aren't impact anyways. A complete overhaul is in order, but that doesn't guarantee anything. Then Cousins will be expendable by the time we actually do get a decent defense. Its a dilemma I don't know how we get out of. We have long since proved free agency is not an answer for us.
 
You may be right regarding loyalty, but there's a lot of daylight between that idea and Gruden and McVay storming out because ownership or the GM wants a change at DC.

Thank God fans don't run NFL franchises because we'd be starting over every 2 years instead of every 4 or 5 which is the Redskins norm (and btw the practice that has helped keep us in the cellar for most of the last 20 years). I wasn't a fan of the Joe Barry hiring and I don't know how his D would be doing with more infusion of talent. What I do know is that he's nowhere near the disaster fans want to make him out to be. And whether or not the defensive woes are more about him and his scheme and ability or more about the players he's got to deploy them, I'll let McCloughan determine.

Kerrigan, P. Smith, Baker, and Cravens are playing for jobs? Really?

We are a NT, MLB, and S away from being a competitive defense.
 
I have a feeling the Doctson pick is going to be brought up a LOT until he produces. There were a whole lot of NTs available in the draft with good grades this year.

THIS times 1 million!!!!!

I've said it before, I just want consistency from this franchise. Give us a good 5 or 6 years under the same regime and THEN see if it's not working.

I get that owners of sports teams are impatient to see returns on the billions they pile into teams and want bad franchises to be great overnight. But overnight turn arounds are the exception not the rule. And in the NFL it's way harder due to the fact that there are so many players on the field. An NBA Team can turn around by drafting a seminal player to make them relevant. NFL not so much.

Rebuilding takes painstaking years of correct decisions, and that's if you don't make the occasional misstep on the way, which is inevitable. No one bats 1000.

Sure the Scotty & Gru regime has made a couple of missteps, maybe a few players haven't worked out from the draft, or from FA. Maybe Barry wasn't the best choice for DC.

If you look at our coaching history it's pretty sketchy lately. We've had 7 coaching changes since Gibbs1 (8 if you include Robiskie!). That's 7 in 23 years, Take Norv Turner and his 7 year stint out and you've got 6 in 16 years.
That's an average of 1 coach every 2 1/2 years. (add to that our QB stuggle and you start to see why we've been perennially bad!)

If we also take Gibbs2 out of the equation we see that only ShanaClan took us to the playoffs, and lets face it that was a mirage of a turnaround on the back of the RGIII experience! Which he couldn't repeat and then balls up so badly he lost the team.

Simple fact is that you can't bring in a coach and turn a team around to a Superbowl winner in less than 4 or 5 years.

Hers's some stats for you. The last 15 Superbowl winning Coaches... (Yes I spent my lunch crunching numbers and looking stuff up!! lol)

2015/16 - Broncos - Gary Kubiak - 1 year tenure. (Now this may look like you can... but... He took over from John Fox, who had in the previous 4 years had a 46-18 record and gone to the playoffs 4 years in a row. Kubiak took the reins of an already good team and pushed it over the hump!)

2014/15 - Patriots - Belli - 15 years tenure at this point.

2013/14 - Seahawks - Carroll - 5 years in tenure at this point.

2012/13 - Ravens - Harbaugh - 5 years in tenure at this point.

2011/12 - Giants - Coughlin - 8 years in tenure at this point.

2010/11 - Packers - McCarthy - 5 years in tenure at this point.

2009/10 - Saints - Sean Payton - 4 years in tenure at this point.

2008/09 - Steelers - Mike Tomlin - 2 year (though again he took over the reins of a good team with Big Ben at QB. They'd been 34-14 over the previous 3 years and won a superbowl just prior to his arrival)

2007/08 - Giants - Coughlin - 4 years in tenure at this point.

2006/07 - Colts - Tony dungy - 5 years in tenure at this point.

2005/05 - Steelers - Bill Cowher - 13 years in tenure at this point.

2004/05 - Patriots - Belli again - 5 years in tenure at this point.

2003/04 - Patriots - Belliiiiii - 4 years in tenure at this point.

2002/03 - Buccs - The other Gruden - First year.... but... This again was a winning team with 4 play off appearances in the previous 5 years and a record of 48-32 when he came in.

2001/02 - Patriots - That man Belli again! - 2 years in tenure... BUT his accent coincided with Brady's emergence. Plus he took over from a 3 year tenure by Pete Carroll who had a record of 27-20 with 2 playoff appearances in his 3 years. So again, not a firesale team.


Compare this with Gruden... He took over a team that had quit on ShanaClan, with a 3-13 record (the worst record in 20 years!) and had a collective resume of 36-60 over 6 years prior with 1 miracle playoff run. Plus no franchise QB and an owner that had a history of meddling and an incompetent GM.

I'm with Boone, we have to get off the Merry-go-round and give this team and management the time it takes to right the ship. 5 year plan. I'll judge Gruden and Scotty in 2018 and if we're not contenders by then then they're a fair target I think. Till then history shows it takes at least 4 years to get to Superbowl level.
 
That all sounds good. However, you can't remove the Norv years. Which is what we got the last time we "stayed the course".

And maybe it's just the lingering effects of Norvitus, but Jay reminds of Norval. Very good coordinator. not a very good head coach.

I could be wrong. And I hope Jay proves me wrong. Norv should have been gone after 4yrs. The last 3 were pure torture.

I think Jay will, and should, get a 4th year. Unless we were to somehow lose out. But, he should get the same orders Norval got when Snyder got stuck with him.

Playoffs, or you're fired! No excuses.

I love Cravens. Can't understand why they only played him sparingly sunday.

I'm looking for 3 D line, two ILB's Corner, two safeties. That's eight guys.

Until we learn to stop the run, we are going nowhere. And we don't have the front seven for it. Kerrigan Smith and Cravens are primarily pass rushers. We need pro bowlers not just nice good guys, my mantra remains.....we need more.
 
Going back to the onsides kick for a moment...

It was a huge mistake by the coaching staff. The team tried it halfway through last season and teams are still aware of it. So it wasn't much of a surprise when it was tried against the Pokes. It's understandable to try it when there is a small amount of time on the clock and the team is still behind. Bring it back in three or four years when the situation could dictate a true surprise.

We had a successful fake punt earlier this season. We can't run another fake this season or next - teams will be looking for it. In three or four years - sure, give it a try if needed or desired.

Remember when Zorn tried a fake field goal and the result was a TD? He tried it again later that season and savvy old Coughlin made Zorn look like a wad of donkey dung.

Gruden reminds me a lot of Norv too. He may tease us the same way. I hope not.

So far, though, Norv had gone 3-13, 6-10 and by this point into his third season was in the process of going from 7-1 to 9-7 and out of the playoffs for the third straight year. Gruden, thus far, appears to be on a slightly higher trajectory.

I think Year Four will really tell us a lot. That year Norv regressed to 8-7-1 and then to 6-10 and that should have been enough. Gruden could similarly tread water, and if we are still winning 6-8 games by Year Four or Five that should be enough.

Until then, I can be patient. It's been 25 years. What's another season or two? :)

That would give us an Elite Defense that could win the SB with Brock Osweiler under center.

If we are talking about a Competitive Defense, one that can keep a team like the Cardinals from scoring 31 points for the first time in seven weeks, I think Chris is probably correct.

Actually I think we did try one but it was broken up.

But generally you are correct. The Cardinals were playing VERY aggressively on defense. Every time we ran a draw play we gained 12 yards or more. We just didn't run it very often. Our scheme played right into their hands for most of the day and we never really adjusted. That's one of Gruden's weak spots.
 
While we need to upgrade the whole defense, we need at least one stud somewhere in the middle.

Interior Dline, ILB, or safety. A guy that plays all three downs. a game changer.

We've got a bunch of JV guys, and only a few varsity guys on defense.

I just hits the Tums again and shook my head at that fade........ a definite 'what were they thinking' moment.
 
Here's what ticks me off the most : Every week, Jay gets up at the podium and says we need to be physical and get back to running the football.

Well, you're the freakin' Head Coach! How in the hell does it not get done?

You come out Sunday in Zona and have ONE rushing attempt the whole first quarter. One.

That's a real commitment to running the ball more.

I'd rather he quit the BSing and just come to the podium and tell the truth: "Don't like running all that much but I sprinkle in a rush here and there just for the hell of it."

Either that or if he's serious about running more take over the playcalling from McVay and put your money where your mouth is.

As my Mom used to say: Time to shit or get off the pot.

Agreed, I think we need the sideline to sideline middle linebacker, that guy from Alabama #56 Reuben Foster. If we can't get the Ala. Dline #93 Jonathan Allen, get the LB. Hell get them both. Plus their safety. Their other linebacker is a stud too.


I spent Thanksgiving week in Huntsville AL where my sister lives. Everyone of course is Ala fan whose not an alumnus. I've watched every Al game. They also have a stud at tackle. Loaded, take the whole damn draft from that team as far as I'm concerned.
