Random Commanders Thoughts

Update: Reid has been confirmed with a concussion. It's his 6th since 2011.

6 concussions before the age of 27.

When do you have to give serious consideration to retirement? 8?

What crappy news.

In practice, Reed should wear one of those "Hit Me Not" yellow jerseys that Franchise QB's wear.
And he should have started doing it, like 4 concussions ago.

I swear. We can't catch a break. Reed should have retired today, but the fact that he didn't tells me he will probably play on Sunday. Idiot.

Is there any part of this new protocol that can force a player to retire after a certain number of concussions, for the league's own protection and liability, or does it get stricter after so many concussions, or does the protocol remain the same, and the career decision is totally up to the player ?

Reed needs one of those helmets a number of players started to use back in the day, but the NFL and there long running relationship with Riddell put an end to the "ProCap."

From a 2103 piece....

The league’s rebuffs of ProCap and other protective headgear raise the question of whether the NFL’s quarter-century alliance with Riddell helped stifle competition and innovation that might have reduced head injuries.

“It prolonged my career for years,” Kelso said. “I took a lot of kidding -- getting called 'Bubblehead’ and 'Gazoo’ -- because of how it looked, but I stopped getting concussions.”

After suffering three concussions in the first half of the 1994 season, Wallace concluded his Riddell helmet wasn’t giving him enough protection and began wearing a ProCap. He incurred no more concussions and won his third Super Bowl ring. A number of variables can affect concussion rates, including playing style and plain old luck. Still, from his place in the trenches, Wallace became a believer.

From another source, take your pick.

"Helmets do two things very well: protect the skull, and absorb direct
linear force impact. But protecting the brain from injury? There’s no real
way to do that," Beckmann writes. "Think of a carton of eggs. We’ve
figured out how to protect the shells and keep them from cracking, but if
you shake an egg, the yolk can still get scrambled. So, it’s unwise to expect
a helmet to do something it’s not designed to do.”

They had the technology at the beginning of the last century.

The original leather helmet.

Who is going to lead with their helmet if it's not like a wrecking ball?

Leather helmets is crazy. You'll have on the field deaths with leather helmets or no helmets as I've also heard suggested from inadvertent contact. The size, speed, and power of players now requires helmets. A lot of head to head contact is inadvertent, not just because someone is leading with their head intentionally.

Sounds like someone else has joined my bandwagon. I thought I was alone.

I'm a big Formula 1 fan and I'm sure I remember them asking Jackie Stewart once how he'd tackle the issue of driver discipline as at the time there were alot of incidents of crashes that were avoidable.

Basically he inferred that he thought that because the cars were now so safe, drivers were taking risks knowing that if a crash was the consequence they'd walk away unscathed. They were doing the mental calculation and diving into unsafe overtakes simply because they knew that the only real consequence for them would probably be that they would put themselves out of the race. Injury and death were pretty slim chances. If you're a driver squabbling over the lower points and have no stake in the championship then what's to lose?

His solution?

Put a great big spike int he middle of the steering wheel and take away their seatbelts. Or words to that effect.

His point being if the drivers knew there was a real risk of death then they wouldn't do stupid things.

I do wonder how many Players think that the helmets and pads give them a false sense of security?

I don't disagree with the article saying that you can't make a concussion proof helmet, with one exception.... the bigger helmet could cause more issues. I've heard that logic thousands of times in the motorcycle world from the pro no helmet people. I was surprised to see a top flight helmet sell for only $400. Good motorcycle / auto helmets start around $650. The real top of the line stuff starts right around $900, and go well over a thousand. My surprise was that a motorcycle helmet is made to take one impact basically and cost far more then a helmet made to withstand a high number of impacts. Technically, if you drop your helmet on the ground causing a paint chip, you're supposed to send it to the manufacturer to inspect / Xray it. I must be missing something here.... but it sounds like NFL helmets are low tech to me.

Some say make better helmets, some say go back to leather helmets, some say leather helmets are crazy. Or we could just do like the Australians' football, and play with no head-gear at all, yet whose collisions, and head-collisions specifically, are quite comparable to the brutal violence of the NFL.
I'm sure SkinnedAussie would be the expert on this one

Okay am I the only asshole who laughed at "Gazoo"?

You're not the only asshole.

Am I the only one who simply cares less about the Redskins and the NFL as a whole, this year? I just don't feel like investing so much energy and time getting all knotted up inside anymore. This league is becoming nothing I would seriously choose for my children to support, so why should I?

I rode in the (ahem) late sixties, started with no helmet but finally warmed up to the idea after witnessing a car pull in front of one of my buddies, over the bars head first into the curb ....... was not pretty.

Soon discovered that they were actually beneficial beyond the safety thing, bugs to the face at '60' mph hurt like crazy.

'Course the helmet laws pretty much made us all conform, it even got so particular that handle bar grips had to be under a certain height above the compressed seat (limited ape hangers) and rear view mirrors were also mandated (a lot of dental mirrors got bolted to our choppers)

Would love to see our NFL guys get gear to limit the head injuries, sure hope that corporate influence (money mongering) doesn't inhibit that potential. The NFL would be 'stoopid'
not to invest in their most valuable asset and maintain best they can.

It's obvious from the lack of overall posts.
Only a handful of posts right after a huge win over Baltimore, one of the most significant wins since 2012.

There's a lot going on in the world. It's not rocket science. There is probably a very small fraction of fans offended over the National Anthem thing, but beyond that this season is like every other. Our activity level here is no different than it ever is - aside from moving on from a couple of prolific posters.

Does Jordan Reed being out actually help Cousins? Now I know that sounds crazy but hear me out?

IMO, Kirk sometimes depends on him too much, when there are other options(by seeing replays during the game) open during the course of the game.

Forcing Kirk to look at other options could be very beneficial in making the offense more potent when you get guys like 11,88 and 80 more involved.

What do you guys think?

Kirk threw to 8 different receivers last week. If anything, he wasn't focused on Reed enough. Not having Reed out there is never a good thing - he's our most dangerous receiving weapon (yeah, and I'm including Desean in that statement).
