Joe Barry Report Card

Schwartz was available too but yeah Joe Barry, nice pick after Haz.

I guess it's one of those things that make you a genius when it works or... Vinny Cerrato when it doesn't.

I'm solidly in the 'give Barry some decent DL and more LB talent before calling for the Lynch mob' camp. And I'm not sure Saint Wade himself could muster up a pass rush and good run stopping with the talent we currently have on the roster. I was impressed with Barry's ability to piece together a functional secondary last year and even the defenses overall capability given the ridiculous rash of injuries we had on that side of the ball last year. I did not support his hire at all at the time - there was no track record of pro success there (in fact quite the contrary). But by the end of last year, I wondered if perhaps Barry was a solid DC who'd simply been put in untenable positions previously. This season has me back to square one on him. But I do wonder how much of our woes are really about talent level more than coaching ability. Pretty tough to separate the two things.

Well, for the record, I haven't dialed up the lynch mob yet. I am thinking about putting their number in my contacts, though, if we don't see a noticeable reduction in exploited run gaps, uncovered receivers and the like over the next couple of weeks.

Grumble.

Maybe we can call in Bill Arnsparger to consult with Coach Lynn...I mean Barry?

What Boone said.

Plus I like Manusky.

For me, I want defensive players that have a nose for the football, high motor, and wrap up tackling skills. I don't know what the "measurable" are for McClou, but these qualities will go along way to making up for talent deficiencies. I'm not sure we are left with guys out there who fit that bill, but we'll see now. And if they do then I keep them.

How do we know if Barry can see this? For one, putting the right guys in the right position to make plays. What I will be looking for Sun.

I get the fact that Barry doesn't have much to work with, on the DLine. But that could be his own doing. The fact that someone like Kendall Reyes was brought in, and took up a roster spot for so long, and all signs point to it being a Barry signing, and not McLou, is very concerning as far as Barry goes.

What 'signs' is it that you speak of? Your opinion? I guarantee you that no one gets signed - not a single player - without McCloughan signing off on it. If that's not the case, then McCloughan is a weak GM. I think we'd both agree that McCloughan isn't a weak GM.

In Barry's defense (yuk yuk) Cooley was ranting about the safety play, missing their gaps, not hitting them fast enough, bad angles the whole kit n' caboodle.

Mentioned that there were 18 missed tackles vs Browns, 13 were by the safeties alone.

He gave Nacho a 'pass' 'cause he hadn't tackled anyone in over a month. Blackmon a converted corner is having trouble with the new angles and Bruton was just not getting it done.

Lot's of talk about lack of squeezing the ends too, allowing for larger middle gaps 'cause they were going too wide or not making inside moves.

Because the gaps aren't being hit per design, it's making the Dline look horrendous. Didn't say the line was great but they're not as bad as it looked.

He doesn't think the scheme, the calls and the alignments pre-snap were all that bad, what happens after the snap is what's up.

He's hoping that the new safeties at least know how to fill and tackle with effect.

All still need to get to the ball more, they ain't no 'wolf pack' yet.

Brian Mitchell brought up a good point, which is that the best NFL coordinators on defense take away the 'signature' plays or players of the opposing offense. They challenge offenses to beat them doing something ELSE.

The Redskins seemingly don't scheme much for the opponent. They run what they run week in and week out and expect the packages to work in a 'one size fits all' manner.

So, in the opener the Steelers had ONE game-changer on the field for Ben to throw the ball to, Antonio Brown, with all the injuries and yet the Redskins failed to put together a game-plan to specifically stop Brown.

We had 'left' and 'right' corners who didn't switch up assignments despite the fact the Steelers consistently lined Brown up against Breeland rather than Norman. We didn't provide consistent help on Brown's side from the safeties.

Barry preaches these kinds of 'standardized' approaches across the positions in his defensive system.

It's the reason he doesn't flip pass rushers on the outside based upon the offensive line matchups they are facing, why he says his corners and safeties are 'interchangeable'.

He's been saying for 2 years there is no such thing as free and strong safeties on this defense. They all do the same things, etc.

Unless you have the undeniable talent of the 1978 Steelers or 1985 Bears, this is going to be a problem in today's game.

Everything is about match-ups. Seeing where you can get an advantage, based on size, speed, experience, health, etc.

That's how guys like Belichick, Wade Phillips and Gregg Williams have been successful.

If opponents have ONE legit threat, you can bet these coaches will triple cover an Antonio Brown if they have to ensure that Brown doesn't win the game for the Steelers.

If Ben Roethlisberger is able to get the ball to his #3 and #4 wideouts (with #2 WR Markus Wheaton also out) and still get to 300 yards and 3-4 touchdowns then good for him.

Likewise, if a team is starting a rookie tackle on one side a guy like Belichick in the past would move a Chandler Jones to the other side to put pass rush pressure on that rookie or inexperienced lineman.

We don't do these things. We come out and other teams know exactly where our players are going and what their assignments are.

You can't be that predictable, but especially so when you still have some holes to fill.

Overall, my concern is that while Barry does not have legitimate talent across the board to field a top defense, even if he did his approach to scheme and system/strategy may prevent them from being as effective as they otherwise might be.

Some defensive alignments from the Browns game. There's both good and bad there.
There's about a dozen still shots so I just posted a link instead of posting all the photos. There's probably some way of putting a slide show up (it's in Google presentation) but that's well beyond what I can do and this works anyway.

...A man's got to know his limitations...

Some new formations of the type some of us have been advocating for and some of the ones that flat out gut the center of the dLine.

"Why do we never make adjustments?"

Redskins defense hasn't allowed a second half touchdown in three straight weeks... A 3 game winning streak moves them to 3- 2. Season is on.

Special Teams might argue that. Yeah, we had a bad snap on a FG attempt, but overall, our ST pulled our chestnuts out of the fire again today.

But Barry and the defense did what had to be done when it it needed to be done. Props to the D today.

Now the offense? I don't know what the hell to say about that.

The ST unit has been great. It's been so long since we've been able to say that. Garcon also deserves huge praise.

Gotta give it up for the defence today. They carried the team. Definitely a refreshing change.

Yeah, I am not seeing it like others. What I saw was Bad Joe Flacco today, coupled with poor coaching from Baltimore. They made a lot of mistakes and we had a number of bounces go our way, bailing us out.

I will say two things...Will Compton is good, very solid in the middle on our defense. If he isn't too busy trying to shed OL because the DL cannot do their job, he is everywhere he needs to be. And, it's obvious our DL is better with Jenkins in there, as well. I hope he gets more playing time as the season wears on.
