Jay Gruden and Sean McVay called a game-plan of passing the ball in the red zone that would have been fine if Tom Brady was our QB.

The problem is that Kirk Cousins is a quarterback who is erratic, sometimes he is very accurate and then he goes into bouts where he is just plain awful in terms of location and decision-making.

It was apparent in the Steeler game and again in the beginning of the Dallas game that Kirk was not sharp to start the season.

A veteran coach would have called for more rushing attempts and more quick, short passes to get the offense going.

But these guys on this staff seem to ignore how the qb is going and call the game the way they want to call the game.

Joe Gibbs was very quick to change things up when something wasn't working.

But Gruden and Co. don't deviate from the plan.

The only thing saving this defense (and team) from utter destruction is forced turnovers.
The moment this team stops forcing numerous turnovers a game, we will be helpless.
Our run defense is horrific. Our tackling is horrific. Teams can simply run at will, against us.
Cleveland probably could have won the game, had they chose to run the ball every single play, even when down by 11.

Which mean we lose next week to the Ravens. They don't turn it over much and they can probably run the ball for 200 yards on us.

But if we beat them then it creates an impossibility if we also beat the Giants again. (Both teams will be destined to win the SB)

I watched this game closer then I normally would, and really cant see any real issue with the scheme Barry has in the run game. I saw player after player be in good position, and missing the tackle..... broken tackles. I know we were up against a back that's been taring it up pretty good, and I'm not saying I'm happy with Barry's overall defense, but he's not the one out on the field not wrapping up. Only once today did I see a pre-snap formation that had me say WTF, and it was exploited for a nice run. Barry needs to figure out how to get these bozo's to tackle on a consistent basis fast, as I don't see his job being as secure as Gruden's.

I disagree....ultimately the discipline of tackling falls on the coaches.
If you have players who repeatedly have tackling issues, then either fix it in practice, or put players on the field who know the fundamentals. It shouldn't be that hard - in the immortal words of the great Jay Gruden.

Isn't that kind of what I said.....

Barry needs to figure out how to get these bozo's to tackle on a consistent basis fast, as I don't see his job being as secure as Gruden's.

Well if it's any solace, we weren't the worst tackling team today in the NFL.
Look at all the missed tackles during this Lions-Bears game, and the runner was even wearing a super heavy gorilla suit.

I suspect the opposing RBs are hitting the holes a lot faster than our guys are used to seeing in practice.
Bad angles and dangling arms are the result of those oh-shit-he's-out-already moments on game day

It's so hard to say from where I'm sitting without being in the locker room.

Is it because we didn't draft D-line? Is it because Barry sucks? Or is it on the players? Or maybe a combination of all three?

We had three more turnovers today. Our D has been great in that regard.

Thing is, it's not too late. We're not limited to trades, or waiver wire, or waiting til next year.
There's guys on practice squads that we can snatch, who are better than our guys.
How about DE Cam Johnson, who Cleveland just snatched from Arizona's Practice Squad, and BOOM, he slams Cousins with TWO sacks, just ONE DAY after they signed him. We coulda had him, instead of just looking at street free agents like Cullen Jenkins, who have been out of football for a year or more, and are at the end of their road, and nobody else wants. Johnson was even born in DC, and went to UVA, so he shoulda been on everyone's radar.
And teams are stealing from our PS ! Why can't we pick up a PS player from somewhere else, for even a softy DL like ours ?
I can't even remember the last time we picked up a player from another team's PS. Can you ?

I can't, but McLovin was incredibly good making those moves in our secondary last season. He's a great talent evaluator.

We could sign Pot Roast again right now. But is he really any better than what we have?

Sometimes I just don't think there is an easy answer. Take a look at Carolina as just one example. Their D is complete crap right now.

Does their coach suck? Of course not.

Do their players suck? No.

So what is their problem, and what is their quick fix? Or is there no quick fix?

I haven't reviewed the game tape (I will) but in the games I did watch Cleveland in, they used a bunch of formations with 8 Olinemen and a QB plus RB. And different variations with one WR. IDK that the Redskins or many other teams really match up well against that sort of lineup at the point of attack. However, missed tackles in the second level is a whole other issue.

Are they Ravens that good? From what I've seen of them, not really. Oakland is an improved team but Baltimore didn't look impressive even though the stats look like they should have been the winner. But Carr's 200 yards beat Flacco's 300 because he put points up. They fell asleep against the Browns and nearly paid for it. Gave up 145 yards (6.3 ypc) to the Browns - Washington gave up 163 (5.8 ypc) so they may not be quite the team that some people think they are. Still a challenge but really no more than the Giants were overall.

Filly the week after is another story . They have been playing like the team that has allowed the fewest points in the league so far (even before the bye).

The defense came through in the first & 4th qtr's and got it done when it counted with turnovers. They did it and that's all that matters. If they hadn't Barely would've had some 'splainin' to do because maybe the other team posts the W. Maybe not. They did kinda disappear in the 2nd & 3rd though.

It would be really cool if this team could put four consequetive good quarters together. Something we couldnt do much last year either.

If the Browns coaching staff wasn't sniffing glue they would have run Isaiah Crowell 25-30 times regardless of the score. As it was he had 15 carries for 112 and TD. That's 7.5 per carry (are you kidding me?!?). Why the hell would any coach who was having that kind of success with a player stop going to him? It defies logic. Glad to see that honor going to another staff for a change.

Our offense is one of the best Skins offenses I've seen in quite a while. Now that we are running the ball better and getting the red zone issues sorted the only thing stopping us...is us. On the other hand our defense couldn't stop Lake View Middle School.

Like in any sport talent matters and we need more defensive help, especially for the front seven. Still, it's hard to believe that scheme and coaching doesn't have anything to do with it. This is going to sound like a very personal attack on Barry, but I'm not sure why he was hired in the first place. Nothing in his resume showed any glowing successes at any level. Last season's defense was crap and this season's might be historically worse. Unless the defense turns around he'll be gone regardless of the talent issues. In the meantime we're going to have to score 30 plus every week just to have a shot.

I don't remember all the particulars Sandy, but if I remember correctly, there was a possible scenario that depending on how we finished we would have 'earned' the London game and then our next opponent would be in London as well.

Teams that go to London come back on their bye week - makes sense. So if get to go twice, do you get a second bye? Wouldn't be crazy about them going twice in one year.
Maybe they'd come back and get a Thursday Night game. Hello, Mara???

Most teams take the bye week afterwards. One of the teams playing today opted not to take the bye next week. If we had finished third it would have given us 2 road games in London in back to back weeks which I'm glad didn't happen as it would probably be a distraction. Hopefully we sneak a win away from the bengals over there.
