It happens, even to the best.

Yes, but Revis 4 years ago is what we are paying Norman to be, and is what the rep he has now is. Revis absolutely is human, and he is going to fall off eventually (just like every shutdown before him), but he is in his prime now. We are not comparing late career Revis to mid-prime Norman, but mid-prime of both.

Best case scenario: Norman completely shuts him down, we hurt Breeland's confidence and we may win game 1. That's if Cousins threw better, running game was better, etc.

Worst case scenario: We hurt Breeland's confidence, Brown lights Norman up, and we still lose game 1. And the fans would freak out.

It's a 16 game season. There's a lot to consider with these decisions.

So, in both scenarios, you're making the huge assumption, that we hurt Breeland's confidence.
If that theory was true, and it truly takes that little to hurt his confidence, then he'll never make it in this league, anyway. Because every time he gets beat, which WILL happen time to time, then his confidence will be hurt, and he'll never be the same again, and never be good or great.

Barry seems to be predictable, and unable to adjust.
When we've played good teams like GB and Pitt, we jump out to an early lead, and not long after that, the walls cave in, and our defense then gets obliterated, while the opposing O-Coordinator finds ways to adjust.

Watching the Steelers run sweep left every third or fourth play successfully was excruciatingly painful. Outside of a couple of plays, Bruton was dead meat all night. Barry needed to do something and did not. The Redskins made zero halftime adjustments other than tossing out the run game completely. That's been a hallmark of Jay - if your behind, never run the ball. Opposing coaches probably get bored game planning against such a one-dimensional team.

We need to give up the ghost on defense and admit several things:

1. Whether we run a 3-4 or a 4-3 or some exotic hybrid, the team can't forever make do with waiver wire pickups and late round picks on the DL. The key to stopping the run is the DTs and the MLB.

2. We have both strong and free safeties on the roster. It would be nice if we could accept the fiction that all of our safeties are the same and have the same skills and can do the same things well. We can flip flop them around without prejudice. The reality is that Ihenacho, Bruton are strong safeties and work best closer to the line of scrimmage while smaller, faster players like DeAngelo Hall and Will Blackmon are free safeties and work best in the middle of the field and in deep coverage.

3. The coaches have to do a better job of putting the play-makers we do have on defense in better position to be successful. That means asking more of Josh Norman, more of Ryan Kerrigan and more of Preston Smith and Chris Baker. Rather than limiting them in the game plan we need to expand their roles until others are capable of carrying more of the load. When facing an all-pro receiver like Antonio Brown we have to admit that either Josh Norman needs to check him on critical downs OR we need to double team him so that he alone is not going to beat us. The Steelers don't have another receiver with breakout skills that was on the field on Monday and they didn't have a tight end of note. Who else were we afraid of?

4. If the team is not going to be able to get 40 plus sacks from the down linemen and outside linebackers then we are going to have to pick our spots and blitz inside linebackers and secondary players to pressure the qb when the down and distance calls for being more aggressive. Again, the Steelers had one major downfield threat and we allowed Roethlisberger enough time to find him when he needed to.

I bet you Breeland's confidence gets hurt less by him being switched off than it does with him getting beat repeatedly. Brown may have beat Norman, it's definitely a possibility. But when what is being done isn't working, you switch it up.

Athletes with an ego as fragile as what you are describing don't last long. I have the feeling Breeland wouldn't have been hurt that much.

Richie Petitbon and Bill Bellichick have two hands full of Super Bowl rings as defensive coaches.

Both believed that in order to win a game, you have to stop the opponents best player and make them go to their #2 or #3 options.

By refusing to put Norman on Brown or segment the field so that Brown was facing a double team on a regular basis, the Redskins simply allowed the Steelers to go to their best player and use him to make the difference in the game.

It's not that Josh Norman was not used as Deion Sanders was is the issue - it's that the Redskins alternative was to have a lesser corner in re talent and experience cover him, often times without support.

I don't think that's the way the best DCs would have drawn it up on the board during the week.

The sad thing is the Skins could have signed #1 defense in the league Wade Phillips. Sigh...

I don't know where a Cornerback with a frail ego plays but it's not the NFL.

Bashaud was in spots to make plays and some he did and some he did not but definitely could have and probably should have. It wasn't like the only reason he got beat was because the Steelers were so good that Breeland didn't have a chance - if that's the case just cut him. He did have opportunities and has the ability to make those plays - it didn't happen. He'll see some Dez this week and maybe Beckham but with Norman's & Beckham's ego's and history they might be locked up all night till one or both get tossed from the game.

Seattle does the same thing with Sherman. He plays his side and the other Corner is expected to cover his guy no matter who it is. The fans didn't like it and brought up the same arguments about making Richard move around because those guys not named Sherman got toasted early on but they grew up quickly and the Seahawks are quite deep now. I suspect Breeland will improve faster when being tested against higher caliber players. By the looks of the rest of this team they have time for him to come up to speed.

note: I think that they could've used Ryan Davis who got cut from the Jags (picked up by Dallas). 11 sacks in 34 games with no starts isn't bad at least for backup help on the line. That's OK, we'll find out this week because da boyz have to play him.

Shanahan could've fired Haslett after his first couple pathetic season and hired Phillips.

Instead he went to Houston and turned their defense around from 30-32nd to 1st in the league.

2RBs rushed for 100 yards this weekend. The lowest total since 1993.

Guess how many WRs went for 100 this weekend? How about 150 yards?

We lost to Miami in the first game last year. Where did we finish?

Blame anyone you like. But Breeland? The same guy that shut Dez down twice? Our number 1 corner last season that stopped OBJ and others? Come on.

I think the criticism of Breeland is borderline ridiculous. Breeland has looked frequently like a top 5 corner. He had a bad game against probably the best QB/WR combo in the league. It happens. I'm not even sure I buy that Josh Norman is the superior corner. And I seriously doubt Norman does a bit better given some of the ridiculous passes Roethlisberger threw. I mean, Big Ben is scooping low snaps off the turf, and throwing perfect blind strikes downfield. It was a ridiculous performance. Breeland is one of the top 3 most talented players on this team. Period. He'll be back.

I think this was exactly the game he needed. He was kinda high on the horse over the course of the off-season and sometimes it takes a whoopin' to put you in your place and motivate you to do better. My only criticism was not that he "sucked", he's clearly shown he can play the position, just that with all his talk, I would like to have seen him do better than he did.

I also maintain, had he actually come away with the INT in the EZ on the 4th and 1 we all knew was coming, which he was a fraction of an inch of doing...or even swatted it away, the rest of the game would not have been as difficult.

Hell of a best case scenario there. Try this one..... Norman holds Browns production to a minimum, which is (being realistic here) what match ups like that are about, and Breeland does a fine job defending the other guys he's on boosting his already confident attitude, and we (being realistic again) keep it close, and maybe squeak out a win. Number one rule when playing corner.... instant amnesia, and if Breeland doesn't have it, he better get it quick. I love the kid, and think he has a bright future. Being you seem to think we might hurt Breelend's feelings or his confidence by putting the top rated corner on the top rated receiver, do you think letting Breelend become Browns bitch did a lot to boost his confidence ? Do you think it helped his confidence for games two through sixteen ? Yup, it was just one game..... one of the same old obtuse defensive planing and unwillingness to even try to adjust during the game. The D didn't show meaningful change from start to finish of last season, so what's different this season.... Joe have an Epiphany, and was still reeling from the vision for this first game ?

But just to feed off all the other stuff stirring in the pot right now, what kind of defense would Wade Phillips field, with the personnel we have right now ?!?!
