Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Yeah ... that came out wrong. :)

I honestly have no idea what we'd have done if we hadn't re-signed Kirk.
uh ... not cut Griffin? :halo:

I guess that was my point.
Oh no you di'ent! In that case I'll pretend like I never read it. :)

Though for the record, I don't think there was any realistic chance that Kirk was not going to play here at least one more year. Not unless it was Kirk's side that wouldn't let it happen. Mainly because I don't believe the FO saw his 2015 as just "a solid season against an easy schedule" any more than I did. I think they think they just might have something. :)

I think the presumption was if we lost Kirk in a bidding war during FA and were left with no QB under contract at all then we'd have to make a 'drastic' move to fill the spot with someone viable.
Yeah, I'm not so sure, Tom. I wouldn't have been too surprised is they opted to start Colt for a year rather than reach in the draft or scramble to plug in a veteran FA for just a year or two. Happily, we'll never know.

Wasn't Colt also a free agent at the time?
Yeah, he'd probably sign on but the contract would be a little different than the one he's got now don't you think?

Totally agree. That's pretty much what I was trying to say.

I think.

You could very well be right. I'd like to think you are.

Not to take anything away from Kirk, but I'd like to see him do it again before I'm totally sold. I'm fickle that way. :)

And I suspect we DO sign him to a longer term deal now, it will be relatively team-freindly. Otherwise he'd be signed already.

That $63M guaranteed deal for Fletcher Cox really raises the bar for other positions where the commitments are usually a lot larger than DL, namely qb.

If Kirk Cousins has a pro bowl caliber season and the Redskins go back to the playoffs his new contract is going to set team records.

Ah, the summer doldrums of the off season. The upside, the next time the team gets together it will be for realz.... and football will be alive and kicking until 2017. ;)

One employee of the Redskins organization who will not be taking off for six weeks is VP of football administration Eric Schaffer. He will be at Redskins Park as the July 15 deadline for getting Kirk Cousins signed to a long-term deal approaches. Schaffer will field phone calls from Mike McCartney, who is Cousins’ agent, and work the nuts and bolts of the deal.
Need to Know: Redskins players, coaches head into six-week break | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

Let's see if Schaffer can get it done (or not), it'll be fun to see some squirming around these parts as the dailys come out from the media on Kirk's contract situation.

One thing we do know .. he the starting quarterback for 2016, the same one who showed pretty well as last season progressed, there is no impending doom of injury, no 'innuendo' creeping around social media aside from the occasional syrupy 'boy scout' stuff and no parsing of every utterance by the media.

Yeah, we all have our questions, now they can be answered in the upcoming season.

Just 'git 'er done' Kirk and be top dog on this list.

gawd what a mess

Sixteen QBs in sixteen years. Most impressive.

Kirk is either going to sign a top 5 qb contract with us or he will be gone next year...I really don't see any in-between.

Personally, I'd like to see him play 8-10 games this season before doing a contract (or deciding not to do a contract.)

If he's so-so, let him walk...if he sparkles, he's likely the real deal...so, do the deal.

Oh, I could see him getting a Brock Osweiler-esque contract that would average 18-20 mil a season and put him about 20th in the league against the cap this year. Maybe I'm wrong. Let's pretend I'm wrong. Let's say he wants Joe Flacco money which would pay him about $25 mil a season and put him at 5th in the league against the cap this year, and the Redskins don't want to do that and we go with your sparkle plan.

Under that plan, if Kirk sparkles he won't just get top 5 money. He'll be the absolutely highest-paid QB in the league. You do realize that, right?

There are risks in any plan. It's all about how the team evaluates the talent. If they think there's a bigger chance he'll sparkle than not, they will probably try and sign him to a more modest deal now. If they think that it's likely he'll be average-ish, they'll probably stall.

So we'll see.

Don't REALLY disagree with you, tr1.

I will say this, when I saw that we had signed Jordan Reed to a 6-year, $50 million contract after one solid season, I was a little concerned. Then I looked at the breakdown and realized it ended up being just a two year audition.

If the Redskins manage to deal as shrewdly with Cousins on a long-term deal I think I'd be ok with that.

Yeah, ain't it

Browsed some long tenured QBs who had at least one start for the year.
Most were pretty good, aye?

Big Ben 12 yrs, Bradshaw 13 years
Romo 9 yrs (sort of), Troy 12 yrs
Brees 10 yrs
Peyton 13 yrs w/ Colts (Unitas 16 ;))
Eli 12 yrs
Jaws 10 yrs, McNabb 10 yrs
Young 8 yrs, Montana 10 yrs., Brodie 12 yrs
Rodgers 8 yrs, Favre 16 yrs, Starr 14 yrs
Brady 15 yrs, Bledsoe 9 yrs
Elway 16 yrs
Marino 17 yrs

ETC.

Baugh 16 yrs, Joe T 8 yrs, Billy and Sonny combined for 14yrs

Hard to find these guys but if you get one hang on to them.

sigh

Yeah, apparently three is our magic number. If a Redskins starter manages to last into his fourth year, we should throw a party. :)

Well, Tandler has started the doldrums off with this one on Kirk. :biggrin2:
Guess we'll have to get used to it from both sides of opinion, still some fun tho.

But during that time span did he somehow go from being a backup with an uncertain future do being the best young quarterback in the game? This is what an assistant coach who spoke to Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report said about it:

“It’s possible we will look back maybe 10 years from now and say Kirk Cousins was better than Andrew Luck or almost any other young quarterback today. Maybe better than Russell Wilson, as well. I would have never thought that a year ago—mainly because I feel like a good quarterback there didn’t have the organizational support. That owner [is not good], but now he seems to be staying out of the way. His coach believes in him, and that offense is perfect for him. He’s got weapons and an improving defense. He may shock a lot of people in the end.”

Freeman said that “other assistant coaches” have told him the same thing.

What should be made clear here is that the assistant coach is projecting. He’s not saying that Cousins is better than Wilson, who has a Super Bowl ring, and Luck, who has led his team to a conference title game, right now. He’s saying that Cousins has the weapons, the coach, and the organization needed to start on a highly successful run that would vault him past Wilson, Luck and, presumable, Derek Carr, Cam Newton, and other quarterbacks under the age of 30.

Could Redskins? Kirk Cousins be ?better than any other young QB?? | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

Uh huh. *nods*

Regardless of anyone's personal feelings, here's what we know for sure:

1. Gruden was a great QB himself.

2. Gruden has literally been able to take plumbers and carpenters and turn them into top Arena QBs playing in front of 20k people.

3. Gruden took a turnover-prone QB with limited skills in Dalton and helped him get into the $100 million club.

4. While the jury might still be out on both Gruden and Cousins ever winning the SB in the NFL, there's no question that Gruden's offense is incredibly QB-friendly for pocket passers. And WRs will be open all over the place.

Call me crazy, but if I were putting together a franchise for the next 5-10 years right now, I'd have Cousins in my top 5 or 6 QBs in the league.

We have an amazing combination going right now for Kirk. He's got the coach and he's got the WRs in place to absolutely crush it.

Gruden a great QB..... ya in the bush leagues. If he were a great QB, he would have made the big league. Same goes for the turning plumbers and carpenters.... these were not NFL caliber players, or they would have been in the league. That being said, Gruden is doing a good job at this point, and I hope he keeps developing as a coach.

Gruden and McCloughan have seemed to make the right decisions so far on offense.

McCloughan went 5 hours with Snyder to convince him to give Cousins a real shot at the QB job and move on from Griffin.

Despite the early injuries, they continued to go with Jordan Reed and give him a chance to grow into his potential and now you have one of the top receiving threats in the NFL.

We draft Brandon Scherff and he comes in and starts 16 games no questions asked at right guard.

Just two years ago it looked as if the Redskins were years away from having a competent OL.

Now we have 3 starters in Williams, Scherff and Moses that look like cornerstones with perhaps LG being locked down by Spencer Long during training camp.

On the outside, Crowder looks like a steal as a #4 draft pick as an effective slot receiver.

Doctson only adds to the potential on that side of the ball and was considered by many to be the best WR in the draft, whom we got at #22.

If Jay can figure out when to call timeouts and manage the end of half and end of game time issues better it all seems good on O :)

I just got really excited reading this.

Then I realized that we are not in the Arena Football League.

That's really just a matter of perspective. He was a great QB in college at a school that slings the ball.

As for the NFL, there's no shame in not being able to beat out Dan Marino. Few could.

I'm not sure why another NFL team didn't sign him, but he felt his best (and maybe only) chance to start was in the AFL.

Younger brother finished his 1985-1988 Louisville career with 7,024 yards passing (fourth all-time in school history), completing 572 of 1,049 passes for 44 touchdowns. As a senior, he led the 8-3 Cardinals to their first winning season in a decade. He was signed as Dan Marino's developmental backup on the 1989 Miami Dolphins before chasing his dream in the Arena League.

"Howard Schnellenberger (Jay's coach at Louisville) would tell you, Jay had a lot to do with putting Louisville football back on the map,'' Jon says.

"He was a heck of a quarterback, an Arena Bowl MVP. He just didn't get an NFL opportunity. And I think he still deep down has a chip on his shoulder because he didn't.''

Gruden on Gruden: Jay says Jon won't cut him any slack

Hopefully he uses that chip on his shoulder to shred through the NFL for us.

Because he wasn't a great QB.
