Random Commanders Thoughts

I mean, I still haven't decided for sure how I feel about him, but... damn.

That was against Matt Ryan, Jameis Winston, Drew Brees and Carson Palmer. Damn.

I will say our defense is going to be better. If Kerrigan and Preston can get pressure, we might be scary.
 
And that's the key. For the secondary to reach its potential, and more importantly for the team to really compete in January, we're going to need to get consistent---or at least timely---production out of the pass rush.

Off the top of my head ... 2005?

Not to splash too much cold water on this idea, but PFF said we had the third best CB group in the league. Im not sure our safeties are included in that list. :)

It is nice to see the Cowboys are 27th and the Eagles at 29th. Hopefully that bodes well for Cousins and our bevy of receivers.

Way to early to get excited about potential and possibilities, but... damn. We COULD have a really good defense, with a really good CB group. But as OM said, I don't care how long those guys can cover, if we don't get pressure on the opposing QB, it won't matter. Hopefully Preston will keep developing like he was doing at the end of last year. Hopefully. Gallette alone SHOULD make a pretty significant impact, but you never know.

Lots of coulds and shoulds, which makes me nervous. I like the potential, but we've been down this road before.

Yes, those 2007 Pats that lost in the SB to Eli. I don't want to get fired, but this. CANNOT. stand.

I think there have been a couple Redskin teams over the past few decades that had a tandem of CBs as good as this current crop.

1997: Cris Dishman and Darrell Green. Both went to the pro-bowl that year. We were 3rd against the pass that year. Unfortunately our run defense sucked and we ended up with a painfully average defense overall. Norv Turner! Yay!

2000: Deion, Champ and Darrell ... as much as I hate Deion that was an impressive group. Our defense went from 29th the previous year to 4th that year (and 2nd against the pass) but our offense fall apart. Ah, the topsy-turvy days of the Norv Turner era.

2004-2005: Springs, Smoot and Walt Harris. Those were some damn fine defenses. Tough to compare this current group to that one because we don't have Sean Taylor. :(

We've been pretty much wandering in the desert for the past five years or so. If our secondary can start shutting guys down like those squads our defense should be ok, even with average play up front.
 
Can't be one of the greatest teams of all-time and failed to win the championship.

The 2007 Pats aren't too different from the 1983 Redskins that set the scoring record and went 16-2 only to lose in the Super Bowl despite being favored over the Raiders a team they beat during the regular season.

The 2007 Pats ended up losing to the Giants despite being favored and despite beating them during the regular season.
 
Any blurbs if Killi has took a step forward in development? That dude needs to lock up the C spot so we can feed Leribus to some starving wolves or something.

Don't expect hear much anytime soon at least until camp is in full swing and even then it will be speculation until cut down time.
 
It's ironic that the Redskins can find a franchise LT but seem to have such a hard time zeroing in on a future starter at center.

Most teams are in the position of having 2-3 guys that can fill in at center but no stud LT.

It seems like the one position we've gotten right for 30+ years is the LT.
 
I so wanted us to take Ryan Kelly with that first before the ponies screwed that up. I woulda grinned ear to ear as McD smashed windows out of his house!
 
Yeah, I wanted him too. Be curious if that was the initial plan but we'll probably never know.

Guard play. With Shawn Lauvao sidelined, the Redskins have rotated players in at left guard with the starters -- Spencer Long has spent a lot of time there, but so, too, has Arie Kouandjio. Long continues to work at center as well, an area where he needs more work. At one point this offseason, there was a thought that if he looked good in the spring and Kory Lichtensteiger wasn’t 100 percent, they could release Lichtensteiger and save money. But Long hasn’t adjusted that quickly. For now, he’s still better at guard. Earlier in spring workouts, Kouandjio did not look ready to start. For a second-year player it’s all about continuing to develop.

If a veteran center becomes available I think the Redskins will move on him.

At his size and with his injury history, I don't think the coaches believe Kory can hold up for 16 games at 31.
