Will we sign Josh Norman?

Does anyone know if Carolina rolled a strictly man secondary scheme? Just curious

It's an expensive risk to take that Norman will fit.

I'm curious about this comment in particular. Why would we be overly concerned that Norman wouldn't 'fit'? The Panthers run almost an identical defensive scheme as the Redskins, and Norman thrived in it. What's the basis of the concern he won't 'fit'?

If Scot drafts a safety,it could be Hall on the outside looking in...........

This is a great signing for the Skins!! Norman is a legit shutdown corner. The Skins defense just got so much better, and don't forget how good Breeland looked in big games last season. Norman and Breeland together are going to be 1 hell of a pair. The Skins are a stud NT away from having a damn good "playoff" defense. You have to think that NT will be the top priority in the draft now.

Couple of things. First, as I said above, our coaches don't adapt. So if he is asked to do something out of his comfort zone will he respond well? Teams don't just cut great players for no reason at all, right?

Secondly, the great, amazing (and any other superlative you want to throw out there-no sarcasm it was that good) year he had was in a contract year. That might be attributable to his natural progression as a player but we've been down that road before and it sucks more often than not.

I hope the guy duplicates last year for the next three years for us. History says it won't happen though, and it's an awful lot of money to throw around to find out.

I feel that this transaction borders on free agent genius. Sit back and watch the feeding frenzy at the start when teams (like the Redskins of the past) blow their wads in price wars and keep your ammo dry for any opportunities to add real talent later. I'm certain that there are many teams that would have jumped at the chance to obtain Norman's services, but very few that had the resources to do so at this point.

With Norman and Breeland we certainly have a top echelon pair at corner now. When was the last time we could say that?

Some of those are certainly valid concerns brother. I think some of the worry here is tied to your view of Gruden. But I think Gruden is actually a 'player's coach'. Desean Jackson loves Gruden for God's sake. We've had 1 player since Gruden took the job that seemingly there were issues with, and we all know who that was. So I would argue there's not much evidence the coaching staff will not be able to manage this guy. It's also a new start for him, just like it was for Desean, and Jackson hasn't had a single issue since coming here. It's possible. As for whether he's as talented as he appeared in that contract year - no way of knowing, but that's where trust in McCloughan is either there or it's not.

Here's the thing though. I believe Breeland is going to be a top 3 CB before all is said and done - and having a partner like Norman across the way is going to accelerate that process. I won't be surprised if we don't see Breeland in the Pro Bowl this year because team's are not going to want to throw Norman's way.

I think Hall is about done. And I'm not sure he can stay on the field for a full season even if he's not. I could see us keeping him around for a year to help tutor the youngsters. Kind of depends on whether there's a safety they're in love with available at the right spot.

I have to agree w/ Boone, this is going to challenge Breeland to be our Norman, to take his already very good game up a notch or two to show that he isn't anybody's understudy.

And w/ any luck, that spurs Norman to do the same. Competition between the two can only benefit us all.

IMO the missing piece here will be interior D line pressure, quality CBs on the perimeter and seriously large dudes right in your face don't leave a lot of options.

I agree! Last year Breeland was marked up against #1s all season. He's going to have easier assignments this year. I expect him to have a great year.

FWIW, Norm is all of 7 months older than Trent with almost two less years of NFL experience.

I suppose linemen have longer careers than CB's but if both stay healthy then both should be around for several more years playing at a high level.

Talk about deja vu...

Danny's pocketbook sure changes people's philosophies about building a team.

I guess by the time it's over, we'll have the best defense/offense on paper because, well, we paid a lot of money for a so-so qb and a HUGE amount for a very good, but older CB.

But tr1, doesn't that ignore the biggest change this franchise has made in 20 years - adding a savvy football GM to the decision-making process? I really think casting this as 'just another Snyderatto trying to buy a championship move' is oversimplifying things to the extreme. Snyder didn't make this call. Cerrato didn't make this call. Jay Gruden didn't make this call. One of the best GMs in the country did.

I think that makes a difference.

Tr1,I know that posting this is an exercise in futility but here it goes........

The way things work within the franchise under Scot McCloughan, the general manager serves as the chief talent evaluator. McCloughan, Coach Jay Gruden and his assistants and team president Bruce Allen will confer, although McCloughan can and has overruled their opinions. McCloughan makes the final call on which players to pursue, and Allen and chief negotiator Eric Schaffer make it happen. Snyder, meanwhile, is kept abreast of plans, people within the organization said, but no longer is a key member of discussion meetings.

That's a good article. It's nice to see D Hall helping out too.

As everyone can see, Dan Snyder no longer performs the role of GM in any way, shape, or form.

As for Norman...

He lives a very quiet life outside of football. He usually heads to his horse farm on his day off during the season (typically Tuesdays) and relaxes there. He doesn't party at nightclubs or anything of the sort.

The only time you see an attitude is on the football field. It's known as being focused and concentrating on the game. It's being confident in his abilities. That is what makes him a great football player.

All of the above is why you sign this gift that suddenly became available.

He wasn't released because of negatives. It was strictly financial. He even made a last ditch effort to stay in Carolina. The Panthers made a choice as did the Redskins.

His contract could be too pricey for what some of you may prefer. However, after the release of Andre Roberts and a couple of others (Culliver is possibly gone or could restructure), he will fit in financially with ease. With the cap climbing considerably next year, the contract will be more than affordable.

Also, I think he could be here for all five years of the contract. The last two years are extremely team friendly and he could move to safety at that juncture.

Scot is in charge for a reason. Look for a similar approach in FA next season. More depth and another "splash" after the initial wave of craziness dies down. It's his way.

Late to the discussion here, but really glad we got Norman. Lock down corners don't usually become available in FA, especially when they're only 28. He fills a HUGE need in the secondary and now we can focus attention away from CB during the draft. Norman and Breeland should be a formidable duo in the secondary for the next few years to come.

Kudos to Scot and the crew for taking advantage of the situation. In the article DieselPwr44 posted, TEN other teams were interested. Great job getting on his radar first and then closing the deal!

I also forgot about Toler. I think he started at CB for Indy. So there appears to be solid depth behind Norman and Breeland.

Hail!
