Bleacher Report: Scot McCloughan Q&A: The Philosphy And Tools Of a Successful NFL GM

Great read. Feels so good to have a competent GM at the helm now. In Scot I Trust!

Not gonna lie, this part gave me chills:

B/R: But you can’t miss in the first round.

SM: You can’t, and you shouldn’t if you do enough work. Everybody said Brandon Scherff was taken too high. He’s a guard now, and he’s the fifth pick in the draft. I said, "Are you kidding me?" He played every snap in the season but one. The only reason he missed one is because his shoe fell off, and to this day, he yells at me about it. That’s the only snap he missed all year. He would have played the whole season, every snap. He’s not the most flashy guy, he’s not the prettiest guy, but he’s a football player, and that’s what I’m talking about with a red. Now, he might be a blue in two years, three years. Who knows? But right now, he’s a red. He’s a core guy, and, all of sudden, guys walk in next year and see him, they’ll be like, "OK, that’s how we act. That’s how we lift weights. That’s how we condition. That’s how we go to meetings. That’s how we practice." Guys walk in, and they’re scared of him. Trent Williams is scared of him, and he’s a Pro Bowler. Trent said, "I don’t want to mess with that guy." And [Scherff] is a rookie, but that’s what starts building a culture. He’s a red. You wait and see who we take at 21 in the draft this year. He’s a red.

Thanks for posting that McD5. Indeed a great read!

The Draft can't get here fast enough.

Agree, nice read.
But I'm pretty sure Scotty was exaggerating a bit, when he was talking about Trent being scared of Brandon.
I kind of doubt Trent walks around shivering in fear in the presence of Brandon.
And even if he did, I doubt Scotty would publicly embarrass his own player like that, by shedding to the public that his player is terrified of a teammate.
We probably still havn't gotten to know Scotty personality well enough, to always know when he's exaggerrating or joking.

I suspect Scot is using 'locker room speak' when referring to Trent being scared of Brandon.

Not claiming to have inside knowledge of actual meaning but I took it as a sign of respect by Trent for Brandon.

Kinda like 'you scare me boy!' when someone busts their butt working extra hard, particularly up against each other and declared with a grin and a little astonishment.

Scot to Kirk: "And we're going to build this roster to where you can be average and still be good. "

Hmm...

It worked for Theismann,Williams and Rypien..........

Well, last year we had no running game to speak of and only one receiver, Jordan Reed, that was a consistent presence during the course of the season on the field and Cousins threw 29 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions.

I can believe with a better ground game and a full season from DeSean Jackson and perhaps another drafted WR in April, Cousins will look even better in 2016 even if he comes back 'as much the same guy'.....................

B/R: You already know who it's going to be.

SM: (smiling) Yeah, I think. Hopefully he's not gone. But I'm adding the same kind of guy. Toughness, smarts, competitiveness, team. The whole thing.

That makes me think that at 21 (unless he's bluffing, but I don't think so, at least not in a deep sense) a) we're not going for Nkemdiche or Spence or some other boom/buster with iffy intangibles (not so much in an off-the-field sense, but in terms of effort/dedication on the field), and b) that we might well be going for someone like Joseph or Ryan Kelly ("football players," and guys whom he thinks will likely still be there at 21, even though not a big reach).

In general, I'm very happy with the approach. Though I'd prefer them to trade down a bit from 21, then try to nab someone like that. (Though I think that's entirely consistent with what he's saying.)
