Tech/Computer advice from me

It's a drastic jump from 7 to 10 but not 8 to 10. 10 us actually ok.
 
I signed up for 10 and will download it sometime this year or the first half of next year. I want to see the reviews and what many users will say before I fully commit to it. I have 7 - never really wanted 8.

These issues with flash have been around for a long time and they're actually now finally fixing them

I'm personally not getting rid of it. I have a good AV, root kit, and malware finder so I feel good enough about it

Hi and good morning BGO! I've had many recent frustrations with my Nexus 7 tablet and I'm going to upgrade as a result.

Been looking for an android tablet that can run both Kindle and Nook reader apps as well as the Google play suite. I also want a 10" tablet that is around $200 or so.

This is one option that is interesting and I am close to jumping on it.

Can any of our more tech savvy members tell me any reason to be hesitant to buy it or do you feel its a decent looking value for the price point?

Can't speak to that tablet - in fact, other than my Kindle Paperwhite, I have little experience with them. I have a very lightweight Samsung Ultrabook that is a nice compromise. I will say that of all the tech companies I've ever purchased from Lenovo produces some of the best products. I was a Thinkpad user for years.

Hope someone here can give you some advice on that particular one.
 
I also can't vouch for that particular tablet, but I do know that not all tablets are compatible with Google, nor are they compatible with both of the book readers you want. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't allow you to try-before-you-buy, so if your heart is set on that, you want to hope you have made the right decision. My tablet is a 2-in-1; normally it's a laptop, but one click of a button and the screen comes away and becomes a tablet. It does run Windows8.1 so it is compatible with Google, but it cost nowhere near $200. it was closer to $800!

All I can suggest is to visit the numerous forums that have been set up for the various tablets and just read what owners say about them. Some will praise what they have, some will no, but at least you'll have a better idea of what's available for what you want.

I realise that Android is Google's own operating system, but my first tablet was android, and was NOT accepting of Google. It wouldn't even use google as a search engine.

Be aware that if you update to the Lollipop 5.0 operating system, I have just read 5 pages from people who have had a problem of some sort. Sounds like the early releases of Windows!

Skinned Aussie, while you're in the vicinity, I have an Ubuntu issue, to request your assistance.
I tried searching the net, and even posting in Ubuntu forums, but I just keep going in circles, with their instructions.
I was working on a spreadsheet in the Gnumeric program. I un-knowingly and accidentally hit a key, that typed over some very important data in one of the cells. Then later I saved the document, without knowing what I did. Once I realized it, it was too late of course, because the document was saved.
Is there any way that I can revert to the most previous version of the saved document, in order to rescue the data that was accidentally over-written ?
 
I'm not familiar with that program, but I do know that once you make a mistake, DO NOT SAVE, but instead close the program. What I used to do when working on any document was to have the original and a working copy. I would open the document, then save it as [working], and I would do any necessary changes to that one only, and saving as I went. At the end of the day, my final save would be to the working copy as well as the original. Thus, I would only lose that day's work if anything serious was to happen. You would have two files that were exactly the same, but named differently. You could delete the [working] copy at the end of the day, or use it again the following day. It is entirely up to you. How to get back the most previous version? I don't think you can.
 
Never heard of it! Have you tried to find a how-to on google? I know there is a step by step guide available, and it is written for all platforms.
 
I don't know what the correct term is for the following issue, but it's when your entire email account gets infected by some malicious program that starts sending garbage emails to everyone in your address book. For example, if your name is Joe Jones, the subject line typically reads "from Joe Jones" as it arrives in the mailboxes of your Contacts, and God knows what it contains (as I never open those since I recognize it right away, but probably contains some malicious URL link).

I was once told by someone that I believed to have a lot of tech knowledge, is that those infections in the email account, are triggered when you open an infected or suspicious email or attachment from someone else. But I am having this infection happening to email accounts, to which, that theory is completely impossible, so I am desperately trying to figure out what causes it.

So, I've got this email account that I only use to send text emails (no attachments) only to myself. It's just a way of documenting information I will need in the future, and just using that email account for storage and organization of information. This particular email account - I never receive emails from anyone whatsoever, so of course I never open attachments. I only use it to send emails to myself (reminders, research, etc). I also happened to have my own alternate email addresses, listed in the address book, but no-one elses.

But despite all of the above, I still frequently find myself getting those infected spam emails from this "inactive" account, that spam everyone in your address book - which in this case, is my own other alternate emails. How is this even possible ?

Here is something even weirder. I've got another similar email account that I ONLY use for myself, that I have not even logged into, within months and months. Yet suddenly, out of nowhere, I find out that email account, is suddenly taken over by the infection and spamming all my other emails. What could possibly trigger that, if I have not even logged into it, within months ?

If such innocent activity, or lack of activity, can trigger those things, I wonder how easy it is for it to happen in the email accounts I actually use, and have those infected spams sent out to people I actually know. Some people don't recognize it as spam, as it somehow appears harmless to them, and they assume it's really me, and they then open it, so that concerns me.

I can't think of anything that I'm doing that is triggering this issue. So what exactly is the culprit and how can I stop it, even though there's virtually no activity on some of my accounts to realistically cause it ?
 
You have been hacked, and if changing your email password is not stopping the spam, the virus has infected your whole computer. You are obviously using Windows because if you say you haven't opened anything suspicious, Ubuntu would just ignore it as you need to activate a virus when using a Linux based operating system.

If your whole computer is affected, I suggest you save all your important work (which you should be doing anyway), make sure you have the Windows installation disc ready, reformat your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. I know it's a PITA doing it this way, but at least it's better than fighting a virus.

Use different passwords, and change them every month.
 
If you are prepared to spend time trying to find the virus, then trying to get COMPLETELY get rid of the virus, and hoping it it isn't lurking deep within the operating system, by all means run CCleaner, and Malwarebytes, and your anti-virus program of choice, and whatever else you can think of. If you rely on your computer on a daily basis, what is quicker? More importantly, what is more effective?

Your back-ups should be up-to-date so there's no problem if you lose them. If you run software you have loaded from discs, there's no problem losing them. If you run software that has been downloaded, you should have the program installer either in downloads, or on the desktop. These should be backed up or else you have to download them again.

Now can you see why I prefer to use Ubuntu rather than Windows?

How do you know the account is 'inactive'? You haven't replied to it, have you? Replying to a spam email is one way spammers know your account is active, and thus, they will use it to suit their needs.

By inactive, I mean, that I do not use the email account to send or receive emails to anyone else. I only send emails to myself on that particular account.
Kind of like a "poor-man's" method of storage and backup.
So, responding to your other question, no I do not reply or ever even open a spam email.

I use Ubuntu about 90% of the time. Pretty much the only time I use Windows, is when I go to the Public Library to use their computers.
So I suspect perhaps the library computer is infected, and by simply logging into my "inactive" email account on the library computer, does the library PC then spread the infection to the email account I just logged into ?
 
A computer is a computer, no matter who owns it, and by opening and reading your email at a public library, you are asking for trouble. You have no idea if a keylogger has been installed, who or what may be watching your every key press, and you are being 'watched' even if you don't know it.

Surely, emails can wait until you know you are in a secure environment. If the only time you use Windows is when you access your emails at a public library, I'd be crossing that library off my list of access points. You are safer if you take a laptop and access free wifi that most cities now have.
 
I'm assuming there's certain things one can do on a library PC safely, as long as you're not logging into any personal type account of any kind, or plugging in a personal flash drive to the PC.
But I'm guessing if you're just doing things like browsing the net, or using one of their built-in programs such as MS Word, and typing up new documents, and printing them, then one should be safe ?
