Star Wars: The Force Awakens Reviews (SPOILER EMBARGO UNTIL 12/21)

So it's looking like Harrison Ford is coming back to another large role. I had my suspicions that this could happen. Already looking forward to May 26, 2017. Trailers probably start coming out by early summer.
 
what large role are you talking about?
 
Easily better than the prequels.

Oscar Isaac has 'it'.
 
Flaws: There's not much sense of "evolving" when it comes to the fight scenes. Kylo Ren gets dinged up pretty easily for the main bad guy.

The stealing from A New Hope gets pretty blatant. I'm worried it didn't leave enough to develop the new characters.

Kylo took a crossbow shot to the chest from Chewy which usually blows stormtroopers yards away from where they were hit and continued the fight. He then beat Finn and was going toe to toe with Rey. Dunno, dude was able to mind control which no other person could do as well as stop a laser in mid air.

Right on. I'm not familiar with this particular series and need to read up on it. Agree, ANY StarWars movie is a good one. Except when jar jar binx is in it. Stupid lizard rabbit

What I thought was the most blatant BS?

Rey just being able to fight like a Jedi and one up Kylo Ren.

You grow up watching these movies with Lucas telling the story and showing how hard Jedi training is in mind and body and the girl picks up a light saber and handles it like a pro from the get go?

she's a Skywalker...even Luke was able to use the force when on the ship to block the blasts from the little floating pod thing. by the time they came to fight she had already punked him mentally so it was just a simple fight between a wounded apprentice and a girl who has all the skills but no training.

A New Hope and the Cloud City beating make it very clear that Luke is a noob when it comes to lightsaber dueling with an experienced Dark Jedi (which we can assume Ren is).

I have a hunch this was JJ Abrams laziness at his worst. Ordering him to stick as close to A New Hope would be a good way for Disney to rein him in.

Rogue One is basically the story behind the Star Wars "A New Hope" crawl... Everything that led up to and happened in that paragraph. It's supposed to draw inspiration from "Saving Private Ryan" and "Blackhawk Down"... The director followed up a question in an interview saying, "It's called Star... Wars..." Expect a very different kind of movie... a War movie set in the Star Wars universe.

Disney is separating these anthology films from the "Skywalker Saga" films... We're also getting a Han Solo film in 2 years and I've heard about a Boba Fett film.

Anyway, here is the opening crawl text from Star Wars "A New Hope"... And that will give you some ideas about what to expect this December:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy....

BTW, I've heard we should expect an appearance of Darth Vader in the film.
 
Well hell Im definitely interested now. Wonder if the networks may try and jump on board with a series or 2?

I think it's going to be revealed that she had some level of training as a child by whoever dropped her off on Jakku. She did have that staff, so she wasn't exactly defenseless on Jakku.

We have to remember that Episode IV was basically a 16 year old moisture farmer, picking up a lightsaber and blocking shots from a training droid with his blast visor down... He also tossed a hook & cable around a pipe (hooked it on the 1st shot) to swing across a chasm with a princess in tow. Then he flew an X-wing into a fight with all experienced tie-pilots shooting at him (including Darth Vader) before switching off his targeting computer and destroying the death star with a miracle shot.

People have an idealized version of the 1st one, but really they aren't much different with regard to suspension of disbelief.

Me too! They've shortlisted some actors for the Han Solo role (not finalized yet), and I heard rumor we'll see him in a cameo... I'd love to see in Rogue One, Han Solo dumping Jabba's shipment before being boarded by Imperials. That would be fun, and a good tie in with Star Wars.

As for TV, I've heard rumor that they are planning some Netflix shows (like Marvel has). Hopefully, Disney keeps it all connected, even if Marvel hasn't completely stayed faithful to that. ABC could also do a show (Owned by Disney), like Agents of Shield.

Obviously, they've already done some animated series, but I'd love a Netflix series on "Knights of the Old Republic". I'm afraid that would be a lot of cgi though & be expensive. Maybe an adult animated series to keep the cost down. One way they can keep costs down is piggy back on filming locations that the movies are already using. I mean, they already have a replica of the Millenium Falcon, so you don't have to build that.

I was expecting more of a "Raid" style fighting and we did get the feel of that... However, there wasn't really enough of it and apparently the "Raid" guys were really involved like I thought they would be. The worst part of the movie, IMO, was the scene where they show up... That Rothtars (or whatever they are called) were something I'd expect to see out of the prequels. Finns escape was a bit reminiscent of Luke getting released by the monster in the garbage compactor, but you had Rey saving the day with an appropriately timed door closing.

As for Kylo Ren, I never really got the sense that he was a bad ass... It will be interesting to meet "The Knights of Ren" and discover their origin, but from looking at that order, it looks like none of them are actually force users... Kylo may be the leader just because he is related to Vader. We're still just in the 1st episode of the trilogy. Darth Vader wasn't really fleshed out until nearly the end of Episode V.

There was a lot of paying homage to both Lucas & the original trilogy in this movie, but I don't think there was really any stealing. Chris Stuckman has a really good video on this, but he basically shows how stories in the same universe often have repeating themes (like in a poem)... In fact, Lucas actually says this. Stuckman actually pulled a lot of examples, but the most obvious was how Indiana Jones 1-4 each had the same basic outline and how subsequent "Raiders" sequels borrowed heavily from the original.

Anyway, if you were unhappy with JJ Abrams in TFA, you have all the anthology films to look forward to... And also Episode 8 & 9 will be written by Rian Johnson (Looper)... John Boyega has already read the script for Episode 8 and says he is going to have to "work out" to meet the demands of a more physical role... He also said it was going to be darker (probably echo some themes from Episode V)... The stakes are always raised in the 2nd movie of a trilogy though, so that is to be expected.
