My point was that every single guy on your list has, I believe, not only considerably more games under their belts, but several offseasons as incumbent starters as well. That should not be ignored as a factor ... particularly so given the clear progress Kirk has made over the course of this season.

This is the point that Smoot continues to ignore. A 97.2 QB rating for a QB in his full year as a starter is pretty darn good, especially considering he was not the starter for training camp or pre-season. Aaron Rogers spent his first 3 seasons as a back up, like Cousins, and his first year numbers were very similar to Cousins' numbers this season. Rogers ended up with a 93.8 rating that season. I'm not saying Cousins is as good as Rogers, but Cousins play right now is definitely top 10 compared to the rest of the league right now.

who knows where Cousins fits....I do know this: among the top 10 QBs...only 3 QBs have thrown more passes but Cousins has the lowest passing yards per attempt in those top 10. which follows from what we have all seen.....a whole lotta safe, short throws Gruden/McVeigh have called to protect their protege. the stats are mixed.....and if folks were honest they'd admit rather than cherry pick.

he's exceeded expectations. that's a good thing. the NFL has seen trajectories like this many, many times before and the outcome is not predictable. smooty is right to hold his breath and respond "show me". I'm doing the same. it's right to recognize his success. and it's also appropriate to acknowledge that we haven't beaten any really good teams or top defenses. It's nice to see an offense that isn't a recurring embarrassment. it's also nice to see a defense that doesn't look totally clueless play to play. this is, afterall, a team that couldn't string two wins in a row until the end of the season......in a season where the competition is really sub-par as these things go.

let's win the division......see what McL does over the off-season...and set the bar higher next season. this is a journey in which we shouldn't plant the victory flag without really having accomplished anything other than not repeating the buffoonish patterns of the past two seasons.

Cousins hasn't changed since Djax returned to the line up. The opposing defenses have changed, having to account for a legit down field threat. It trickles down to the entire offense when you can keep a defense honest, and not stacking the line to stop the run. After the last two weeks, D coordinators must looking for ways to slow Reed and Djax down, and the more attention you pay to them, the more it opens up the lanes for other receivers and the running game.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough... We should NOT spend elite money on an average quarterback... If there isn't an elite quarterback, don't spend elite money. I didn't name a quarterback. If we can keep Cousins at a reasonable price with limited future impact to the club, then we do it. I'd even spend elite money for 1 season in a franchise tag for Cousins, as long as it doesn't create an anchor for the future. I've said this about 100 times in this very thread. Why do you keep bringing up RGIII? RGIII is not sticking around here for $16M, and it would be next to impossible to see him as an active player in B&G ever again. So... please... only bring up RGIII if it adds to the conversation. Right now, RGIII isn't elite. Are you happy now? Can we move on?

BTW, I believe Cousins would command those numbers on the open market... Houston, Denver, maybe even Detroit would part with Stafford if they could obtain the Michigan State QB (not a lot of intelligent thinking going on there)... Anyway, for the Redskins to give him a longterm contract: re-signing a player is about negotiating an equitable deal for all parties... It's in the best interest for Cousins and the Redskins that both sides are happy with the deal, or else he should walk and the fan-base should be prepared for him to walk and we continue our search for an elite quarterback. You don't need an elite quarterback to win, but if you pay an average quarterback elite money it cuts down on what you can pay other positions that might help the average quarterback play well enough to help you win.

Kirk Cousins is a 27 year old man and this is his 4th season as an NFL QB with 3 full uninterrupted NFL offseasons under his belt. People seem to forget that he also had 2 previous failed opportunities to become the starting QB of the Washington Redskins and was benched each time. I left Peyton Manning off the list... I was only trying to pick guys I thought would play at a consistently high level the next 3-5 years. Apparently, I inadvertently left Phillip Rivers off the list, too. I was doing this off the top of my head.

I think I made a solid case... I won't argue with anyone who wants to put Cousins in the 18-22 range of NFL quarterbacks, but if you are looking at him as a top 15 QB... I can't see that. Not at all. If you want to take 2-3 guys off the list, I still think you'd have a hard time putting him in the top 15.

I think those stats are more a reflection of where the league is these days more than what type of player Cousins is. Not to say Cousins isn't having a good year. He absolutely is.

But QBs are breaking records all over the place these days. They were talking about this on Inside the NFL this week, actually. How some QB throwing 4 or 5 TDs used to be a once-in-a-season amazing accomplishment that would be talked about for weeks. Now it happens a couple times every week.

The NFL has turned the game into pitch-and-catch. This is reflected by the fact that despite all of Cousins's awesome stats, he's only 13th in passing yards per game, 17th in TD percentage, 20th in INT percentage, 8th in passer rating. That's not bad, mind you. Better than I ever thought he'd be. But given that list you cited you'd think he was the next Sonny Jurgenson. He's not. Not yet, anyway. He's a guy having a good season during a year in which only 14 out of 32 teams are .500 or better.

This league is now all about parity and throwing the ball. Kirk Cousins stats and the Redskins playoff hopes directly reflect that.

Well, as I said he has exceeded my expectations. You are absolutely right that we can win throwing the ball, and I didn't think that was possible at the beginning of the season. He is having a good year. Said that too.

But, stating the opinion that Cousins isn't a top-tier QB just yet isn't a 'knock' on him. And noting that passing stats in 2015 are not the same as passing stats in 1985, 1995, or even 2005 isn't a knock on him either.

It's also not a knock on him to want to take a 'wait and see' approach after one good season. If The Robert Griffin III Experience has taught us anything, it's that a single good season does not make one a good QB.

Up until the end of that game that was a very reasonable view.

Cousins growth since then has changed that perception for many, myself included.

And that feeling is reflected in what Jason Hatcher said after the Buffalo game:

"We are going to go as far as Kirk can take us".............................

At the beginning of the year most people were figuring the Redskins could do OK if Kirk simply handed off the ball, threw short to the receivers and avoiding making mistakes.

There were no calls for him to go out there and be aggressive and try to alter the outcomes on his own.
