RB Chris Thompson: Did not practice because of his shoulder. Gruden said he’s not very optimistic about Thompson’s chances. “Hopefully his pain and the range of motion gets better as the week progresses,” Gruden said. “There’s a chance he could play, but that’s a concern.”

I'm not sure anyone has been saying that. Personally, I put a lot of the failure at the feet of the coaching staff; though I will say it is disheartening to see Kirk be unable to read the defense and audible out of a play where the D was able to key in on what we were running.

Yes. Absolutely, unequivocally, yes. Right now, defenses are daring Kirk to beat them, and he certainly didn't last week. It's a week to week proposition with Kirk, unfortunately.

Besides which, Tr1's point was that if the defense knows it is going to be a run, and our running game is struggling anyway, that might be a good time to switch things up a little and call an audible at the line.

That might work on a case by case basis, or once in a while.
But it's not going to improve our overall run game.
Calling an audible once in a while is not going to overhaul a running game that is lacking in every area.
You still have a strong running foundation first and foremost, to support the passing game (not the other way around)
Which we don't have.

That's exactly what the locals are calling for, pass to set up the run. Run game is not working.
Be less predictable, use available talent of the playmakers in the pass game.
Throw in some read option, Kirk can run a little or pass off it......
 
Fear, like I've said, I blame an uncreative, derivative coaching staff more than Cousins. Not sure about percentages or whatever, but Cousins does get some blame assigned as well because he hasn't been able to beat the defense by throwing, which allows them to crowd the box and key in on our run game. Read Bullock's article, he talks about identifying run blitzers with ease - if a team is sending run blitzers with any kind of frequency, it means they don't respect the QBs ability to throw accurate passes in one on one situations.

I don't put a lot of blame on Kirk, but he sure gets some of it.
 
I gotta give any coaching staff, at least 2 years, before giving them any kind of grade.
Especially, after what this coaching staff inherited.
And especially since Gruden had Bruce as a GM, in Gruden's first year as coach.
 
We're four games away from two years, and this coaching staff has bungled their way enough for me to know they have problems. I won't be shocked if Gruden is still here next year, but I won't be surprised if he isn't. The lack of a run game may be enough for Scot to pull that trigger.
 
There's plenty of blame to go around on the running game. It's not one person:

Gruden and his coaching staff (including Callahan) deserve a large part.

The O-lne itself deserves some.

Kirk deserves some for a lack of recognition.

The RBs making bad reads deserve some. Jones is a rookie, but Alfred should know better.

Injuries to guys like Niles Paul are part of the problem.

Even Scot, for not going on the waiver wire and getting a TE that can block deserves some of the blame.

It's a group challenge at the moment. It's going to take some time.
 
Young is a former linebacker, so considering we're wasting a FB spot on him, and the fact that we've been decimated with 6 Linebacker injuries, I'd like to know if he can contribute as depth at LB.
I havn't noticed him on Special Teams either, so if he hasn't been tried there, I have a feeling he'd be a good ST'er.
 
Young plays on special teams. He made the saving tackle, by the ankles, on what looked to be a big return Monday night.

Conventional screen passes, left or right, will dissolve that run blitz in a hurry. You pass out of the run formation. But your passes, as in screens, are short and don't take much time to develop. I don't think we are making full use of the playbook.

Our problem was trying to pass to far downfield without the underneath help. therefore poor play calling in the face of obviouse blitz and stunt packages.
