Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

OK.... prepare for Knightingale Ramble!

Well that was a roller coaster of a ride yesterday.

Skins never do things the easy way do they? LOL

Just chipping in echoing many of the sentiments on here.
First half was awful. Just awful. I couldn’t see any bright spots across the team at that point. Our O-line was struggling, we couldn’t run block for toffee and Alfred looked terrible. Jones looked as bad. We conceded sacks and Cousins had pressure, our pass protection looked terrible and we couldn’t pass. We fumbled or just gave them the ball back series after series.

Which meant there was A LOT of our defence on the field, and they looked terrible too. No pressure on the QB, could not stop the run, giving up chunks of passing yards and the occasional big play here and there.

At least Tres was getting a work out on the punts, but there were times when I thought he was gonna get blocked.

Oh and the injuries! We seemed to be losing players left right and centre. There was a definite feeling of impending doom.

Worse still this was against the Buccaneers. The team my brother supports. I would never hear the end of this. *groan*

At half time I abandoned the TV and went up to play on my PC instead having the game on the second screen but not intending to pay much attention to it as it was just too depressing at that point.

Thoughts of all the media crap that would result, the calling for Gruden’s head, the QB controversy kicking into top gear.. I hate the circus around the Skins sometimes.

But then the second half starts.

Our defence makes a stand. OK I thought, but I was still only partially watching.

Then the offense takes the field and suddenly Cousins was on fire. We were moving the ball and looking good doing it. Short passes, medium passes, Jones got a few runs to start balancing us up a bit. Suddenly Tampa couldn’t stop us and I was invested again. Computer game forgotten, all my attention on GamePass.

Still as we clawed back I was, in the pit of my stomach, still expecting the worst. This is what it is to be a Skins fan. The deficit was huge and they only needed to score a couple of times to put it out of reach. There was no margin for error for the Burgundy and Gold.

There were moments where I held my breath.

There were a couple of passes where I thought for sure Cousins would get picked. There was the onside kick, that when I realised that’s what they were doing I was already resigned to the fact we wouldn’t get it (no one else in the NFL had so far all year so this wasn’t a Redskins orientated fear!). When it looked like Doug Martin was going to get the TD I held my breath until Breeland chased him down. When Dusty lined up that 4th qtr FG, I was confident he’d get it but I was also thinking “This guy has been so good for us all year so far, is this the one that he misses?”

Credit to our guys, backs against the wall, no margin for error and with the fire to their feet they pulled this one out of the bag. It was a real gut check moment.

I know the team isn’t the finished article. I know we’re not the best team in the league by a long stretch. But I do feel like we’re on the way and all these games are on a learning curve. We’re learning how to win, both players and coach, and yesterday was a key moment. I don’t expect us to go undefeated to the end of the season. I still think we’ll be a 5 or 6 win team at best.

But I liked what I saw yesterday. I liked the fight that we showed across all phases of the game in the second half.

I think those of us preaching patience, this is what we’re looking for. We want a team to learn from its mistakes. To take that experience and meld it into something long term.

Is this a turning point for Kirk? No idea. He could just as easily throw 4 interceptions against the Pats in a couple of weeks. WE still have problems that aren’t going to help him at the moment. Our run game is still in the tank, and he’s likely to have to throw a lot to try and dig us out of a hole against the numbers of points Brady may well put up. This is a worse-case scenario game for us. Battered secondary against one of the savviest passers in the history of the league.

On a positive note he looked more than capable of doing that this week. In the second half he looked great. I think it helped ALOT having Reed back (11 receptions). If we can get Jackson back after the Bye then maybe there’s another step to take in there. Saying that though, he really seemed to spread the ball around. Crowder, Garcon, Grant, Roberts, Jones… Ball was all over the place with multiple receptions. I liked that, on the whole it kept the Tampa Defence guessing. There’s a really good QB in there, his trouble is consistency. That’s the next step he needs to take.

If we thought the first half of this game was ugly against Winston, brace yourself for Brady!

But just for this week I’m one happy camper. :D

Just a reminder of the class act that heath Evans is...

Arian foster is on the screen getting carted off while they say he's out for the season....Evans can barely stop laughing at something he found "funny" to say, "get well, buddy"

Complete piece of shit.

Cousins had a great day statistically, but the Bucs played the 2nd half as if it was garbage time. This is a game we were supposed to win convincingly against a pretty bad team. If you looked at the 1st half, the Bucs defense played pretty much 10 guys within 5 yards of the LoS and a single high safety. In the 2nd half, they backed off and allowed Cousins to pick them apart underneath.

As far as Cousins development... He had a good game, but he's still inaccurate downfield. He had a pretty small sample size of passes that traveled more than 5-10 yards... He is basically a very poor man's Alex Smith with poor ball safety. He didn't throw an INT this game, but he should be killed for that strip sack for TD.

This is the type of game you play poorly and still can defeat bad teams... You aren't going to defeat any good teams playing this way.

An additional positive... I liked how Gruden got the offense going with the read option... That gave the Bucs another look that they had to account for, especially after the Cousins TD run. Of course, Cousins was your leading rusher approaching the 4th quarter.

Some could say the Bucs played like garbage. Some could also say the Redskins came out and played like a true team with urgency and cohesion. Guess it's all in how you want to look at things...

That strip sack was brutal. It was from his right where he could "see" the guy coming if he had been paying attention. That was so frustrating!!

We've only had 2 wins against teams with a winning record (at the end of 2014 or as of week 7 2015)... Dallas (12-4 in 2014) won by a Colt McCoy led offense... Eagles (10-6 in 2014) won by an RGIII led offense. Teams that Cousins has beaten have a combined 11-24 record (I'm including Jacksonville from 2014 in this total, since he played most of that game). None of those teams have a winning record yet.

I'd like to know who decided that this was a game we were supposed to win convincingly.

Never understood this concept especially since we're pretty much the same type of team in the order of things.

Even Vegas had us at -3.5, don't they gift 3 of those points just for homefield, a half of point doesn't ring as an endorsement for a convincing win to me.

Meh. I'm no Kirk Cousins apologist but I think you are seriously overstating the 'garbage time' point.

Once we recovered that onside kick, down by only 10 points with over 11 minutes to go in the third quarter, 'garbage time' was over. It was a game again. It was a three point game with almost 7 minutes to go in the third quarter. There is no way Bucs were not giving us easy yards at that point. We were taking them.

The first half was a disaster. Absolutely. The second half was awesome. I don't care who you are playing. These are all NFL teams and none of them give up 24 point leads easily. The fact that this is the biggest Redskin comeback ... ever ... should make that clear.

So it depends on what you want to focus on. Shame on us for the first half or yay on us for the second? Given that the end result was a win, I'm tending to go with the glass was 51% full yesterday.

Yeah the strip sack was not the finest moment of the game.

As for that second half...

The Skins came out swinging and as Smoot said they Bucc's played soft.

But that half is two 15 min quarters. Add in all the stoppage time and what we're talking an hour or so of time that during any moment they could have just switched back to what they were doing in the first half. I mean I know we've had some rough 3rd Quarters, but we at least seem to adjust a bit on the fly by the 4th and make things interesting on occasion. The Buccs just didn't seem to try at all.

That being said I wasn't watching their defense as closely as I was watching our Offense so maybe they did make some changes to try and shut us down. But sure as hell didn't seem like it. Cousins just kept going after their exposed underbelly moving us down the field. *shrugs*

Honestly hand on heart I think it was a combination of both things. The Skins found the fire in their bellies and the Buccs rolled over with some bad half time adjustments and then never compensated at all.

I'm still on Cloud9 today. :D

Redskins win big and as I'm a big F1 fan I was happy as a clam to see Lewis Hamilton bag the F1 Championship too. For sports yesterday was a good day for me.

However I'm not gonna blow the win out of proportion. Still alot of work for this team to do.

The Skins and Cousins are a work in progress for sure, but that was a hell of a comeback in a game where a lot of Skins teams of the past 15 years would have packed it in for sure. If nothing else this team has heart and we owe them a big thanks for an entertaining game!

This was a win at home against a young team who lost 2/3 of their core receivers via injury during the game, and who committed a team-record amount of penalties (several which were of the self-inflicted stupid variety). A game in which we were losing with under 30 seconds to go.

With all that considered, it was a win. A really important win. The team now goes into their bye week with some confidence and feeling good. That can't be underrated. They were on the precipice of disaster and showed the fortitude to fight back, and to me that means something.

I was not a fan of his dumping off and checking down in the first half, but I don't think any of us were. The over the shoulder pass to Jones was horrible no matter where he placed it. Running backs have different pads on and aren't WRs no matter how well we think they can catch.

Kinda like Griffin all game long against the Bucs last year. Only difference? Cousins came back the next drive and scored a TD, then had 3 more TD's to win the game.

Nice performance by Cousins. Ugly 1st half for the whole team, but whatever happened at halftime, really lit a fire under these guys. The Bucs are a bad team, but Cousins still played well. We all know he is capable of games like this. Let's hope this sparks something in the team and him and they can put a nice stretch of games together after the bye.

I would definitely like to see what happened at halftime. Did Matthew come back in and give an inspiring speech. Maybe Bostic came in and punched someone?

I know someone from chat sacrificed a goat at half....maybe that was it.

Yeah, hoping the RG3 conspiracy nonsense is finally over.

No defense, No run game, Kirk won the game. Fans need to get their heads out of their butt and drop the QB talk -BMitch

Trent Williams confirmed #Redskins got the hair dryer treatment from coach Jay Gruden at the half #livid

The team showed a ton of heart in that game. Probably my single favorite game since Tampa with Gibbs 2 in the playoffs. I have yesterday's game on dvr, and it will never leave my tv for as long as I live.

So..... you're saying we have a chance of getting RGIII back playing soon?

*innocent look* :newangel:

That was me! I sacrificed the goat. Did I do good? huh?

:D

I hope you will agree that I didn't say it was 'garbage time'... I said that the Bucs played the 2nd half as though it was 'garbage time'... I don't think we disagree that the glass was definitely 51% full yesterday. I think it's important not to ignore the 49% just because we won.
