For the 1st time in a long time we've got apparent dept at the WR position.. figured it would be fun to debate a POSITIVE with this squad...

So who are our WRs going into 15'

Desean Jackson
Pierre Garcon
Ryan Grant
Andre Roberts
Jamison Crowder
Rashad Ross

* Evan Spencer to PS

I thought Ross was getting cut due to his lack of special teams abilities. After being spotlighted last night I don't know....

If they were trying to get a good look at him... they did... and he didn't disappoint

We lost!!! The most important preseason game of all of them!! ;)

The Redskins aren't going to be able to slip Ross through waivers to get him on the practice squad now, so I think they have to keep him on the active roster.

Evan Spencer didn't really show that he can have an impact as a wide receiver in the NFL this preseason, and while his special teams contributions might provide a lift, with Garcon at 30 and Jackson at 28 and perhaps facing free agency next year, the Redskins need to keep and develop a player that could become a regular contributor at WR.

So, I agree with OM that Spencer goes to the PS.

The one wildcard is Andre Roberts. He has been a clear disappointment as a receiver and as a returner. At what point does a potential cap hit overrule keeping the 'best' players?

Yeah, to me Roberts, NOT Ross is the wildcard. I think he sticks another year, but McLovin didn't bring him in and has no attachment to him. Wouldn't shock me if they told him to rent, not buy this off season.

What bothers me is my suspicion that all that 'potential' Evan Spencer has is a lot more related to who his family is than his actual talent level. I guess I could be wrong about that - but I've never seen a team promote a guy who should've been an UDFA as much as the Redskins have Spencer.

Yeah, I was very high on signing Roberts when we did. He has, to date, been highly disappointing. Cap restraints might force us to keep him. I don't know. Maybe he shows up this season. But as of today, I agree, he's the bubble guy, not Ross.

And while some teams keep special teams players specifically to play teams, they are usually teams like Seattle and NE that have established starting rosters and can afford to have backups that don't project to help the team on offense or defense.

I don't think this team is at this point.

In today's NFL most teams turn over significant percentage of the coverage teams from year to year and have to integrate younger players that have aspirations of playing regular snaps, etc.

Kotwica has to do a better job of getting a commitment from the younger players here he has on ST to buckle down and take their responsibilities on ST seriously.

Other teams don't seem to have the same issues putting forward units that can perform at minimum an 'adequate' or 'average' level.

Gruden brought this guy in from the Jets where he had ONE year of experience running ST.

I don't know that at some point Gruden may regret not bringing in a veteran ST coach with experience in the NFL to turn this unit around.

If Rashad Ross did not solidify his place on this team, last night...there must be something in practice the coaches see we simply don't know.

I think Om hit the nail on the head. I also agree on Roberts, but Roberts, ST disappointment notwithstanding, did pretty well with the first and second teams this pre-season.

Andre Roberts reminds me of Josh Morgan.

A guy that can be effective when his head is in the game and he isn't pouting about something. But unfortunately THAT seems to be most of the time........................

Last year he got pissed that DeSean Jackson bumped him out of a starting job as a late offseason acquisition and had a poor season.

This year he is trying to hold off Crowder and Grant from getting his reps, but at age 28/29 who wants to invest time in him?

We need to develop our younger players.
