My observation over the years has been:

If you can't tackle in preseason,it ain't showin' up in the regular season.

Same goes with your pass rush. If all your starters are playing and you still can't generate a pass rush, don't hold your breath waiting for it to show up in the regular season.

In 2004, we saw flashes of how stout the D would be.

In 2005 preseason, when Vick was considered to be unstoppable( at that time) remember that D knocking him out of a preseason game? I do.

I don't believe you can hide a good D in preseason,even if you try. Some aspect of good play will always show itself.

Exactly. Preseason performance by either offense or defense should never be used to project regular season performance.

Here are the things we won't know about Barry's defense until we see real games.

- effectiveness of gameplan against specific opponent
- effectiveness of playcalling within specific game
- effectiveness of adjustments within specific game
- effectiveness of adjustments over time to injury, individual player strengths/weaknesses, unit (DL, LB, CB, S) strengths/weaknesses

We have seen none of those things in preseason.

So as far as a grade so far ... Incomplete.

OM...this is a good answer. If approached as "we can't be certain at this point" I think you are spot on. I would carve out one small piece.

by example: NASA had to calculate what the failure rate for launches was going to be. they obviously couldn't do that early on - there were no launches to populate a database! however, by decomposing the rocket system they did have lots of reliability/failure data on major sub-systems and components. they were able to perform analysis that led to reasonable prediction windows for launch failures. well, IMO, there are components of the defense that are better...specifically the d-line. I think that conclusion alone lends credibility to a claim that run defense should be better this season than last year. overall, your ideas are spot on....but I think that we aren't left in a total vacuum here.
 
On paper, in my opinion the individuals populating the DL appear to have improved as well. Whether or not Joe Barry and his defensive staff successfully incorporate those parts in a way that results in overall defensive improvement, however, remains unknowable until we have data points.

actually....my daughter is attending a new school this year. she was handed a Summer reading list...and tested the first week. the quality of her preparations during the Summer has a major influence on her test results. as a parent, I watched her study habits and knew there was a correlation between those and how she would fare.

Just saying brotha H!!!!!

I give him a B... for Barry :)
 
It's been an up and down season for the defense.
But considering we had a depleted secondary : basically shutting down Brees, AND not even giving him any points in garbage time, was impressive.
I expected the Saints to get at least a couple TD's late in the game, after we eased up on the defense.
But the Joe Barry hire is not looking so bad
 
Barry has had some impressive games, and also some head scratching games. I can't give him higher than a C+/B- right now. But that easily surpasses my expectations based on past performance for him.
 
I never felt haslet got the most our of who he had to work with. I never really think that with Barry. When he was hired, the hope was his past defenses suffered more from lack of talent than from anything Barry did wrong. I'm hoping we're seeing that, and if so, can't wait to see how it progresses as McClu adds better talent.
 
I'm not sure what to make of Barry yet. I understand the ridiculous number of key injuries have played a HUGE role in dictating the kinds of schemes and coverages he can deploy ... but I also see enough blown assignments and bad tackling that have me wondering just how effective he is in getting his unit "ready to play" week in and week out.

Went into yesterday fully expecting to see Brees shred us. And after the first 2 matador defense TD's the Saints got against us, I'll admit I was having some Haslettian thoughts about the man. But then somehow his unit stabilized (and got some help from the Saints) and managed to keep one of the top offenses in football down for the entire second half.

So we wait. And watch.
 
Today was a whole team effort, but I give the defense the majority of the props... Holding the Saints to 14 points is significant. Offense getting on top early really helped limit the Saints' game plan, so I'll give this a solid "B+" effort. If we hadn't given up the 2 huge plays, it would've been an "A".

For the second week in a row too. Did the same thing last week. Barry appears capable of in game adjustments.

I also want to point out Paea had a very good game yesterday. I saw many admonish him last week, and I am not sure I agree. He and Ricky Jean have been solid rotational guys...not outstanding, but solid. At least the games I have been able to see, all 4 home games this year I have attended. Yesterday, his sack against Brees displayed how strong he is...he bulled through the OL and hit Brees with quick shove as he was still shedding his blocker. It was a damn good play.

When I saw that Paea sack, I was like, "Did he just flatten Brees like a pancake, with just a push with just the palms of his hands ?"
And is that an indication of Paea's strength, or Brees' fragility ?
Probable the former.
