You can tell by the remainder of the interview what he was trying to say, but it absolutely came across horribly wrong. This again is one of those things that if it was an isolated mis-interpretation, then it would be no big deal, but it's been a chain of these sound bites that have bitten him. He hasn't learned his lesson to just be vanilla, give a long answer with no information, be humble, and leave it alone. He needs a speech coach or something to teach him out to interact with media, because (while I know there's no negativity, malice, or venom in it) he always finds a way to give them just enough fuel to make him a headline on ESPN. Part of being an NFL QB is know what to say, when to say it, and to WHO to say it to.

Yeah, it would better if you win first. But, in the end, so long as you do win, it...does...not...matter...at...all.

I'd agree fully with you....but some people are just so used to being "offended" that they are hyper sensitive and looking for reasons so they can "feel normal".

No worse than "Pot Roast" naming the defense "Capitol Defense", before the first tackle is make.

Of course, we all know Robert has a big bullseye on his back. Personally, while I'd be as happy as anyone if he kept those statements unsaid, I also like the fact that he doesn't curl up in a corner crying because of the microscope.

Most players when asked if they believe they have something to prove will reply with a comment similar to his response. He even clearly states "I have to go out and show that" but that's not going to be in any quote because it doesn't cause drama when he says he has to walk the walk.

"Any athlete on any level, if they concede to someone else they're not the top competitors they're not trying to be the best that they can be. There's guys in the league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that's what I work toward every single day"

That's a very intelligent and we'll said statement. Some jackass took a snippet of it and ran with it....and being on the internet it grew like wildfire.

All that is entirely beside the point imho. This is about having some intelligence regarding what the media is like and how to speak to them. If Griffin hasn't figured out by now that saying you're the best QB in the NFL coming off 2 pathetic seasons and subpar QBing is going to look incredibly arrogant and get blown way out of proportion, is he ever going to learn? Whether fans buy into what the media pushes isn't the point - don't say incredibly stupid things and it's a non-issue.

He's saying he has to believe it and wants to prove it, in my opinion.

The kid is smart, he's always been really smart. How he hasn't figured this out yet is beyond comprehension. It ain't rocket surgery. I cannot even begin to tell you how enormously happy I would be if he was getting crushed for not saying anything substantive in his press conferences. I'm not saying he should go all Rasheed on the media, but... then again, it may not be a bad idea.

I know what he means. But that's the definition of a 'gaffe', saying something that is easily twisted or misconstrued. Saying 'that's not what he meant' does not undo the gaffe.

Smart guys make it clear what they meant all times and don't say things that are easily twisted and manipulated.

I fully agree, but he's got to learn what to say and how to say it. You run face first into a wall enough times, you start looking for a door to get through it. As many times as his press conferences have been chopped, he needs to learn how to speak to the media and not give them that fuel to fire up this drama. It's not his fault, but it keeps happening in and he keeps finding ways to give them what the need. It's annoying, media driven B.S. but he keeps finding ways to feed it. It's a part of his job to speak to the media, so it's got to be something he works on to get better at as well.

I hate to make this seem about him, but it's to the point now where he needs to learn, and get better at not fueling that fire, plain and simple.

John: he graduated college early, ranked 7th in his class, class president, with a 3.67gpa and making the dean's list twice. He's pretty smart.

There are different kinds of smart. Situational awareness, like knowing when to get rid of the ball and knowing what to say and what not to say - is not a strength.

I don't care about the comments, I care about his play. But some wounds are self-inflicted and this one like a lot of the media feeding frenzies he's been in have largely been of his own making. Just my take.

Well, I take it like this.

Like myself, I usually say what a I damn well please. Cause I know I can handle any repercussions that might come along because of it.

And I don't give a hoot in hell ho doesn't like it, or agree with me.

I don't conform, (board rules not withstanding ), to be liked, or act/say what others believe I should.

Like me, or don't. I'll be fine either way.

Me thinks Robert feels much the same. Obviously, I can respect that.

I'm not with ya on this one Boone. When you look at what he actually said there is nothing at all wrong with it, quite the opposite in fact. The sticking point here is you and others critical seem to think he needs to bend over backwards to phrase things carefully or not comment at all in order to avoid having people flat out lie about what he said. To me life's too short, say what you have to say, if they can't accurately represent that then screw em.

Absolutely... I also think a good number of my customers are clueless parts changers that don't deserve to hold a wrench, let alone turn one for a commission. I don't care if they know that I feel that way, but I keep my mouth shut because it means it would negatively reflect the company. That if they stop ordering parts, it's going to have a negative effect on all my counter people who they call and order from.

I'm not even being critical of his message, because the message he was trying to get across is 100% the right thing to believe and say. The problem is the delivery. The words "I'm the best qb in the league" regardless of context is an open door for a flaming. Had he said "I'm working to become the best" or "My goal is to be the best" is a 100% different interpretation.
