OM I think you have missed a key point. Its not about the Native Americans. Here's why. White Americans overwhelmingly favor removal of the confederate flag because it has become a racist symbol. Not just to blacks, but to all Americans. So any minority or any majority can have a valid complaint. Same with the term Redskins. Anyone can complain, if its offensive, then it is offensive, doesn't matter to which group. And therein lies the rub. Congress has already called for Snyder to change it. The groundswell is coming and its unavoidable.

My stance is somewhat like Boone. When its changed, it won't be my team anymore. It won't be the same watching this new named team. I won't like it, don't have to like it. I possess free will and I will choose to exercise it at my discretion.

My solution is one of two things. Snyder move the team to Los Angeles in the middle of the night, retire Redskins franchise and logo and all the records (like the Browns when they moved). They can them call themselves whatever they like, I won't follow them, the players will leave and all ties will be lost for good. The second solution is to just drop the name altogether and have no name. Screw the NFL and Washington elitists and the media. Now they wouldn't know what the heck to refer to us as on TV and the fans can shoot them the bird.
 
I agree that, judging by the destructive path the nation as a hole is on, it's easy to think the change is inevitable.
Were politically, and socially screwed in most of the important ways.
This whole thing is so insignificant to ANYBODY'S benefit, it's absurd.

Sports is supposed to be an escape from all the BS. Not a participant in it.

Not at all.

First off, it's old.
Second, they have marked "Redskins" for death. They would not accept any use of Redskins. Potato be damned.
Third, the feathers, still seen as an Indian symbol, will not be accepted.

So, you'll have to lose the feathers, and add the word potato, every time you'd say Red Skinned. (2 words)
Hail to The Red Skinned Potato's ain't quite the same now, is it?

Yeah, I tend to agree. I think he will lose potential money from many of us here on this site, but the "replacement" jerseys for a lot of fans will more than make up for it. And I think Danny knows it, which explains partly why he has come out against the name change so hard. It puts him in the corner of those against it, until the NFL forces him to change. Make no mistake, Goodell will cave publically before Danny will. The order to change will come from the league office when it comes.

The Dan can fight the change to put up a good face until the change is forced on him.

It depresses the hell out of me, but I do think the change is coming.

Forget the article, but that notion was shot down by other franchises that changed names. I think.

When Roger calls, Dan can't be stupid like Greece in this matter. If he finds himself in a no-win situation, this could do it.

I didn't miss it, micks. The African American community is (and I suspect always has been, had anyone been listening) solidly behind the idea that the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism.

Among African-Americans, 72% see the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism, just 25% of whites agree. In the South, the racial divide is even broader. While 75% of Southern whites describe the flag as a symbol of pride and 18% call it a symbol of racism, those figures are almost exactly reversed among Southern African-Americans, with just 11% seeing it as a sign of pride and 75% viewing it as a symbol of racism.

We're talking about our own individual feelings about this issue. To me, the ONLY voices that matter in the Redskins name debate belong to those it purports to be racist against. If and when there is credible evidence that a strong majority of legitimately Native Americans favor changing the name, and are insulted by its continued use, I will, at the very least, take a step back and re-consider the position I've held my entire life.

That's when I'll also decide if I feel like following the team any more.
 
You can't be serious? It's funny, but you guys can't be serious..

Dumping the Indian logo, name, or anything else historically part of the team's heritage is conceding and caving to politically correct group-think.

I have stated before - I could live with a self-motivated and self-initiated change to 'The Burgundy and Gold'. That wouldn't be a 'name change' but rather moving to the other historic moniker to move away from all of the distraction forever. That is the only move I could support.

I had a random thought. I think Mr. Snyder should simply move the team to a Native American Reservation. Who would complain if the team became something
Ike the Piscataway Nation Redskins. (I think that's a Nation near DC, just used for example purposes.).

Redskins would have to be two words. Either Red Skins, or Red Skinned. Which is beyond stupid.

I do know one thing for sure, even today ... no way I could root for a team self-identified with a spud.
 
I enjoy the subversiveness of the potato reference, but couldn't possibly root for that team myself. Talk about a bridge tuber far.
