Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)​

Here is our latest Redskins mock as we get closer to the draft. On Mondays we will post a mock that has no trades. Tuesdays will feature a mock that contains minimal trades. Wednesdays will feature a mock that has multiple trades. On Thursdays we will showcase a mock that is BGO member centric. Friday will feature a mock that contains the “most likely” scenario. For draft week, we will keep the same format for Monday through Wednesday and present the other two mocks on Thursday – morning and late afternoon. Friday and Saturday will bring “updated mocks”.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Mock Draft, 2015​


Round One: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
The Big 12 star has skills similar to Josh Gordon and Dez Bryant, but without the baggage. His upside is virtually unlimited and comes with tremendous speed and great size. The Mountaineer is always focused on the YAC and coming down with “jump” balls. Creates good separation on crossing routes and fly patterns. White is also very effective on hitch routes.

The PAC 12 standout is solid in the running game and does an excellent job of jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. As a tall and solidly built corner, Rowe has the ability to mirror a receiver that comes out of his release. He has a knack of forcing the ball from the receiver’s hands upon delivery. Rowe is a great tackler who can play zone or man to man. He also played free safety for three years before making the switch to corner. He could be the long term answer at FS as well.

He will have the luxury of spending a year learning the system with no pressure of starting, but he could force Dashon Goldson or Jeron Johnson to the bench as the season progresses. With the newfound depth at S via free agency and from the draft, the Redskins will have size, speed, strength, and needed talents at these two vital positions.

He would initially be a backup to Xavier Nixon/Tom Compton (RT) and could push for a starting position quickly. Brown is quick out of his stance and is able to neutralize defenders on a regular basis.

The Redskins trade down in round one. Marcus Mariota went number two overall, but the Bears covet one of the marquee wide receivers in the draft and move up to the fifth overall selection. The Redskins receive the seventh overall choice and Chicago’s second and seventh rounders.

Only recently has he fully healed and was able to impress at his pro day. The Redskins GM was at the workout to see the PAC 12 record setter perform in cold, rainy, raw conditions. Some would say that Halliday has the “it” factor that McCloughan covets and could be an absolute steal at this point in the draft.

Here is our BGO members-centric mock for this week as we get closer to the draft. On Monday we will post a mock that has no trades. Tuesday will feature a mock that contains minimal trades. Here is your choice for the first round pick. Williams is, quite possibly, the best overall prospect in the draft. Due to other teams needing players at certain positions, the PAC 12 standout conveniently falls to the fifth pick. He is able to play any position on the defensive line, but will most likely be slotted as a DE. Williams is incredibly gifted with elite power, strength, explosiveness, and athleticism.

The Southern Conference standout is very effective against the run, but needs to work a bit on coverage skills. With good coaching from Perry Fewell, it shouldn’t be an issue. Tartt is a quick learner and student of the game. He has the ability to play closer to the line and disrupt the short passing game. He will have the luxury of sitting/learning in his first year, but could get some experience along the way.

I think I'd be giddy come Saturday night if it played out that way. For at least a few months, we'd be able to talk about landing the premier lineman coming out--a potentially disruptive force on the DL the likes of which we haven't seen here in a generation--and adding four other big uglies, including two in the first three rounds.

Whether or not they all panned out, it would continue to make the case that the Washington Redskins may actually be, at long last, turning the philosophical corner.
 
I think that's a bit of wishful thinking - I would be shocked to see us draft more than 1 or 3 O linemen.
 
If McLuvin is a BPA GM then I don't see us taking an O line at all in this particular draft. We pick relatively high each round, and I don't see a lineman in this draft that would rise to BPA when we select, given the quality of defensive players available in this draft.

Of course, I may change my mind if we trade down, as that changes the draft dynamic.
 
It's a good mock. I do agree with Boone that 2 o-line is the high end (vice 3) and Micks that we need to be careful to match value to draft position.
 
Some interesting things happening with Vic Beasley. His stock seems to be dropping fast.

McShay just said he's a second round talent, and the general consensus is that he's no longer a top 10 pick.

John Keim seems to agree. He just said the he has no moves, and won on speed alone in college.
 
Many wildcards in this draft. Too many to count? Maybe there will be no wildcards at all? The beauty of the draft.

The Redskins receive an offer from the Saints to move to the fifth overall pick. It is known that Rob Ryan covets Vic Beasley, the Clemson defensive ace. The Redskins accept an offer from the Saints and pick up two first rounders and a sixth round selection.

Round One: Shane Ray, OLB, Missouri
The SEC defensive player of the year and first team All-American is a pass rushing specialist extraordinaire. His explosiveness to the ball (running and passing) is nothing short of incredible. Ray is a true sack machine and could produce double digit sacks for the next decade or more. Bursts around blockers with ease and uses multiple moves/fakes to get at the quarterback or running back.

Perriman is still learning the game and that makes him a very scary talent for opposing defenses at the next level. Other plusses include being a great blocker, solid on the long balls, great YAC average, and precision route running. Absolutely owns smaller cornerbacks.

The PAC 12 standout is solid in the running game and does an excellent job of jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. As a tall and solidly built corner, Rowe has the ability to mirror a receiver that comes out of his release. He has a knack of forcing the ball from the receiver’s hands upon delivery. Rowe is a great tackler who can play zone or man to man. He also played safety for three years before making the switch to corner.

The Redskins get the better end of this deal as Ajayi is a pass catching specialist and a superb blocker. He can be a three down back if needed and could be part of a formidable tandem with Alfred Morris. The former soccer player is quick on his feet and will fit into just about any running scheme.

He would initially be a backup to Xavier Nixon/Tom Compton (RT) and could push for a starting position quickly. Brown is quick out of his stance and is able to neutralize defenders on a regular basis.

I read an article last evening that said McLovin has taken a total of 5 OL in 5 drafts. Not sure about the accuracy of that.

I'm hoping to see 2 taken this year.

One other note...

I was able to detect a strategy that our GM is using for this draft - it could be a pattern from the past. I will not discuss it publicly, but it is a clever move. PM me here or on FB if you want the details. I think this is part of what separates him from other GMs.

Other clubs likely know of this strategy - maybe not. If it is not widely known, I prefer to keep it from going public - even in a message board forum.
