PFT: Washington may be in the Mariota business

There are so many reasons you say this. (Notice I didn't say do it).

If you have a top 5 pick, you need to show as much interest as possible in every projected top 10 pick. You want any team below you itching to get that one guy, to trade up with you or even above you to get that guy. You make teams that want someone to pay for them. The interest you show should be equal. You don't want to fawn over that one guy and cause someone to jump ahead of you and take him. You also don't want to fake so much interest that everyone knows you are bluffing.

Another reason you do this if the Redskins see only 3 non QBs they like with their pick at 5, then the best way to guarantee they get one of those guys is to get a QB to go ahead of them. Or maybe they really like one guy, but he will go ahead of their slot. Saying they want Mariota will cause a team below them that really wants him, to jump up above them. That moves one of those guys down to the Redskins slot.

If the Redskins say they have no interest in Mariota, then that is one more spot off the board where you know he won't go. That makes the cost it takes to get him go down. Because the further down the draft board a guy falls, the less it takes to move up from say pick 20. It may be too much for the Eagles to go from 20 to the top 5. But maybe not too much to go from 20 to 6, or 20 to 10, or 20 to 15. By signaling interest in Mariota, the Redskins increase his demand and cause teams to take action.

Now, the Eagles or any other team can call the Redskins bluff and see what happens. I would not want the Redskins to take him to just to keep up that bluff. If the Redskins really like him, they should take him because he is the guy. I think the worst case scenario for the Redskins, is no one take Mariota, and he falls to the Eagles at 20. If at all possible, teams need to make the Eagles pay to get him. But don’t take him because you are bluffing the Eagles and want to keep him away from them.

The bottom line is, you need to show you have as many options as possible.

That's a little misleading. In 24 of those years the Redskins didn't even have a first round draft pick. Over that entire time span they've drafted 12. Norm Snead was one of those they drafted. He went to the pro bowl 4 times. Of course he was traded for Sonny Jurgenson, so I'd say that first round QB pick was a success.

And the jury is still out on RG3.

I wonder what the overall success rate is for 1st round QBs. Is the Redskins success less than the league average?

Certainly can't argue about the value of the trade for Sonny. :)

As for Snead, I can only rely on others accounts since I didn't have a chance to see him play in D.C.

Redskins Legacy: Sending Snead To Philly

Snead was named to two Pro Bowls in his first three seasons, although his statistics were unspectacular on three losing squads. He completed 531-of-1,092 passes (47 percent) for 8,306 yards, with 36 touchdowns and 71 interceptions.

What? Did they select Pro Bowlers by pulling names from a hat back then?

As soon as I saw stephen a smiff speak I knew I could dismiss this as yet another non story

Ya know First Take would be a tolerable show if they got rid of Skippy Bayless & Stehen A Smiff. Basically leave Cari Champion to do it.

So it would be a tolerable show if....it wasn't First Take. Yeah, pretty much.

Pretty much yeah...call it Cari's Take or something.

Maybe give Stephen A & Emmit a slot and call it 'Smiffin Around'.

I'd rather listen to a bug chew it's way in to my brain than either of them.

The more I think about it...the biggest F-up in ALL of this has to be Bruce Allen. Jay Gruden should never, ever, ever have been brought here. nothing in his offensive scheme or mindset matched what the Redskins had on the offensive side of the roster when he was hired - it was built into the cards that he was not gonna feel comfortable running his system with the o-line, QBs and TEs on the roster. the dynamic we are seeing play out was preordained. whether Allen realized this or not is open to question - given how he seems to fall in with traditional NFL in prizing loyalty & friendships.

in my book.....so long as Gruden coaches this team....we will never become championship material. he's a second tier coach wedded to a scheme that routinely FAILED in Cincy in the playoffs; more importantly, I don't think he has the creativity to adapt when challenged.

McL can reduce substantially the damage Allen can do. Gruden? He's going to need to be replaced. until this happens....I think the QB drama carrries on...and on.....and on.....and on......

That's one way of looking at it.

Another could be ... he smoked, mirrored and massaged an offense led by Andy Dalton to competitiveness and the playoffs three years in a row.

Andy Dalton.

And before anyone's head explodes---I'm not here to defend our overall performance last year. He has a lot to prove in Year Two, not just regarding this QB or his offense, but his ability as a head coach to get the whole team pulling on the same rope. We'll know a hell of a lot more about Jay Gruden, Head Coach, by this time next year. Right now all we know is his first year he looked like a rook who inherited a bag of steaming crap.

I believe you're being way too hard on Bruce in this particular instance. Overall, yes he's a moron who should never be allowed to evaluate players.

But I think you're forgetting the belief that RG3 no longer wanted to, or was physically unable to run that type of offense again. Shanahan said it, his father came out and said it, and Ryan Clark doesn't refute it.

Now if he doesn't want to, or can't run that offense any longer, then obviously the entire scheme needed to be changed. The line needed to be bigger for protection, and a coach with success in that new scheme had to be brought in.

Bruce should have never been GM here, but I can't fault him for that.

The mistake was the Redskins finishing 3-13 and bringing Gruden in to coach the same group of players.

The roster turnover that should have happened in 2014 is happening now.

This offense didn't have enough talent to warrant making a new coach a slave to its personnel or systems.

Bruce and Snyder continued to have rose colored glasses on re a number of players including Griffin and Orakpo.

Hopefully McCloughan is changing that over time.

What Bulldog said. As far as the 'jury not being in' with Griffin - this isn't a jury trial, he's standing in front of the judge and that guy's name is McLovin, not Gruden. So it's in fact quite possible Griffin is dead man walking

apologies all...not buying in.

either Allen or Gruden pulled a fast one. no one on that roster fit Gruden's scheme. one of the two or both knew it. but they just smiled on - royally screwing every ticket buying fan with a sham front. Gruden, IMO, proved weaker for the deal - he was UNABLE to squeeze anything out what he had.....in large part because he was either unwilling to bend OR TOO ONE DIMENSIONAL to use the material he had in ways that suited the physical and talent sets on hand.

everyone is blithely assuming McL and Gruden see the world the same way. what if that's not the case? Griffin is definitely and rightly standing in the dock. so should Gruden - convenient Allen has already stated McL is not empowered to fire Gruden.

Taking a little sidestep here and riffing off the idea of a trade-down, I was wondering something.

What if Mariota goes before #5? Could there be another "hot draft property" that is still available at #5 whose touted potential impact could make them attractive enough to another team to get the Redskins draft war room phones ringing-unless McLuvin has him on his "I want football players" list of course? Beasley?, Winston? Dante Fowler? Amari Cooper?...etc?

Take a deep breath brother. By the end of this coming season we'll definitively know if Griffin is the guy.
And, if Gruden will finish out his contract.

It's all good.

We're gonna draft Beastley!

Oh yes. Leonard Williams, Kevin White. There are probably four or five. But none would bring the type of payoff that a potential franchise QB would bring.

Gruden may have made some rookie coaching mistakes but he managed to pull a nice contract out of the Redskins so I don't think he is stupid. With the talent here or lack thereof Jay and his brother Jon knew this was not a 1-2 year fix.

Now that the team has a GM there is another voice in the building for sane and reasonable evaluations.

That is evaluations and not infatuations which is what we ended up with when Sanders, Arrington, Portis, Orakpo and Griffin came aboard.

Just like Kahn's 'ceti eels'!
