Why are all you guys all fired up about AJ Smith? I don't get it.
 
I'm not sure why either. He was basically ran out of San Diego and nobody misses him at all. I was actually worried when he was hired and my friends out here even said "This is payback for Norv" to me.

I hope he doesn't become the GM.
 
Just think that he's held in higher regard as a football guy than Allen.
Some have said that his personality in dealing with agents and players is what got him in trouble, evaluating talent was good however.

Man, that seems like a lot of hands in the same cookie jar at the same time. What if Sean finds talent and wants him signed. Is it then a group vote and the winning vote makes the decision?
 
The first FA class the Skins had under Gibbs included Shawn Springs, Philip Daniels and Marcus Washington.

That wasn't a bad nucleus of veteran talent for the defense to build with.

Springs and Washington both made the pro bowl for Gibbs while they were here.

The 2005 team was solid on the lines and could have gone further with a better qb.

Brunell was the key mistake Gibbs made.

At 33 he was no longer the player Gibbs remembered from years earlier. He had been beaten to a pulp in JAX and had lost arm strength.

If Brunell was the same guy he was at 29 the Redskins might have been able to go the Super Bowl.

The team won a playoff game against Tampa with only 149 yards of offense.

Neither Seattle or Green Bay were that good that year.
 
Neo, I have the feeling this move has AJ Smith saying I do not want to get more involved than a consultant. If you want a full time, player personnel guy, go get McCloughan. I doubt he is any more involved from San Diego than he already is.
 
At 65, it's probably for the best that we hired a younger guy who is more willing to pick up stakes and become a Washingtonian.

brunell was expensive a third rounder then we moved a fifth and third the next year to move back into the third round to draft Cooley
those free agent pickups reminded me of Ron wolfs first year in GB then he exclusively used the draft to find talent to finish the roster

On a related note, I'm sick and tired of the Rooney rule bull shit. The Fritz Pollard alliance is now bitching that we didn't go through the process properly to circumvent the rule. It's a friggin business, and you should be allowed to hire who the hell you want without having to worry about pissing off some group, or minority coach / staff member out there. Utter bull shit in my book... having to interview somebody you have no interest in to satisfy a rule that is there to advance people due to race. Don't take that as me saying minoritys in the league are less qualified, it's saying that if a team is looking to fill a coaching or FO position, there going to seek out the people they feel are he highest qualified no matter their race, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation.

I like the idea of going after a training staff and strength/conditioning team that has some innovative approaches.

Gibbs always said that Dan Riley was years ahead of his time and helped the Redskins work out in a systematic way that made the players stronger and more durable than many of their contemporaries.
 
The Fritz Pollard Alliance complains about just about any hire that isn't a minority. Because we're the Redskins, it gets mentioned right away.

I wonder if he is released by the jets if he would be brought in here in any capacity. I know in the past Snyder has tried to get him. He helped build the cardinals into what they are today a lot of his picks are still on that team

got to be honest here: it's a wonder these reporters/columnists get paid at all for this sort of "analysis." in the main....it simply repeats common lore. it has no depth. it leaves the reader doubting whether the analyst really holds any deeper understanding of how organizations work and how people - individually and collectively - are trained and motivated. it leads one to wonder how much detail (you know...facts) the reporter either actually probed for to substantiate hypotheses vice the easier (and lazier) approach of simply quoting some other mediots opinions out of context. it leads one to suspect, very often, that before an idea is even put to paper, there is an animus that shades the "analysis."

I, for one, got very little out of this article......like most sports reporting these days...it's all drifted into ideologically shaped, I-Net (i.e., unverified and repetitive) driven, "confrontation sells".........yellow journalism. and then these folks wonder why the institution of journalism...like many others....has a sinking respect and audience from the public at large? media: bring some real expertise and depth to your thought pieces. these hit and run collisions with reality only highlight how lazy, under-educated and ideological your profession has generally become.

and that's all I have to say about that!
 
I think that's what anybody not operating with an agenda got out of that piece. Nothing.
