To me, Allen's report card here is at best incomplete. Particularly since by all accounts 2014 is his first year as an actual GM.

But that's not what I was asking you about anyway. My question was what hires, specifically, were you thinking about when you invoked the "retreads come here to get paid" rubric. If Allen was who you were thinking about, ok---you're right, we'll have to disagree.

Who else?

To me the Redskins and Snyder have grown a LOT in the past few years in terms of football hires. Haslett notwithstanding. The "retreads getting paid" thing dates back to Deion Sanders, and Bruce Smith, and ... who else? Anyone more recent? I'm honestly asking the question.

If the thesis is "retreads (still) come here to get paid"," is Bruce Allen really the best exhibit?

I suppose someone could argue Fat Al came here to get paid. And I suppose if someone really wanted to stretch, they could include Shanahan too.

Tr1, I also share a few of your concerns, but to be fair, Allen did win the GM of the year award back at the Raiders when they won the SB. So it's not like he's completely without personnel experience. That wouldn't be an accurate portrayal.

I could do that all day..but, nobody is going to be perfect when looking at FAs.

Id say going from the 2000 team to this team we have homegrown people who like being here.

You discount Haslett's hiring with 'notwithstanding'. He's a retread who should have been fired already. If Allen is keeping him around, then shame on him. If it was a money issue, which is likely, then Danny is the culprit.

We disagree about Allen. He was a guy looking for a job...and his resume is replete with working for troublesome owners. His track record in the NFL is poor. And, he's not even a personnel guy. He came here for the paycheck...and, it's turned out to be a pretty good gig. Unfortunately for him, he's now expected to deliver. I have my doubts.

As for players, I'd say Danny has evolved from paying too much on retread players to paying too much on retread coaches.

I guess that's an improvement?

What coaches is he paying too much for--the aforementioned Haslett? I really don't care what kind of money he makes (or any other coach for that matter).

For one thing, no one knows what Has makes, to my knowledge. Has it ever been published? If not, why are we talking about paying him too much--compared to what?

For two ... far as I'm concerned, ANY amount is too much for this team to pay that guy at this point. I hope I've written enough about my feelings on Haslett over the past five years to make that clear. He should be paying US.

So unless we learn down the road that Haslett continues to be here on direct orders from Snyder, I put it more on Gruden at this point than Snyder.

It's okay to hate Snyder and still acknowledge his growth. Doesn't make you less of a fan.

He won that "executive of the year" because he managed to get all of Al Davis' crazy ideas to fit under the cap and they got to a Super Bowl before bottoming out the next year. Who believes that he made personnel decisions for Al Davis? Anyone?

Either way, what he did in Oakland, and then in Tampa working the cap for a cheapskate owner with Gruden picking the players, is a perfect match for what Snyder wanted in a GM, not necessarily what the team NEEDS though.

When you look at what Allen has actually done as an NFL "GM" you have to realize that Dan Snyder knows that he has 10 years more experience than Allen does picking and choosing the players a team drafts and signs because he's actually done that before with Cerrato, then Cerrato and Gibbs. Allen, IMO and it should be obvious, is just more Dan Snyder marketing and at least this time he chose a guy who is an expert with the cap but that doesn't mean we have to pretend we don't see through it.
