Discussing the potential future benching og RG3

Aren't both kids under contract through next season?

There is no rush to resign either.

Keim reporting no fracture, no surgery.

Hear me out here...I am sure this will come across as negative. But I wish this kid would either injure himself and lose his job or get the F healthy and claim the position as our full time starting QB!! This back and forth "is he back?" stuff is really getting old and hard to deal with.

He has a habit of "landing funny"? Not trying to be a dick, but really? I don't remember that moniker coming up previous to now.

Personally, I think he has a (unfair) label of being injury prone. I understand why people are saying it, I just disagree with that assessment. This ankle injury seems like something that has NOTHING to do with the style of play (described as reckless and mobile, in some order), but something that could happen to anyone at any time. I distinctly remember lots of media people saying, wait a minute, Matthew Stafford has been unlucky, but injury prone implies he is getting similar injuries over and over and over again. Personally, I'm not willing to designate Robert with that, though I am getting closer.

Bottom line for me is this. Cousins is a nice QB, perfectly competent and able to lead a loaded team to the playoffs and possibly even the SB. He is not, however, imo, dynamic enough to pick up the team and do it himself with less than adequate talent. Griffin is. Griffin is transcendent when he's right. 2012 was... magical. It may not replicatable, I understand that. But it was enough to keep me in his camp for now.

At the same time, Kirk does things very well, that Griffin does not.

He has a known habit of "landing funny". Which IMO makes him injury prone, and not a random victim of "freak accidents"

He does? Is that why he's been body-slammed, hit hard, hit in the helmet (via cheap shot in 2012 and 2013), had his legs under him on some bad slides, etc but was fully healthy in 2013 (from the standpoint of fresh injuries)?

I think people are missing the fact that he landed awkwardly similarly to how Pierre Garcon unexpectedly broke that tackle vs. New Orleans in 2012 and that affected the next step or two and that's where he got hurt. Griffin broke Posluzny(sp?) attempt but it was pretty much his next step that messed him up. Had the LB never gotten a hand on him, he never would have hurt himself there.

Boone, it can be, yes.

I've personally dislocated my left knee five separate times (with a leg cast on for a month each time) and yes, my right knee five times (with a leg cast on for a month each time.) I had an insane growth spurt.

One specific, but rare condition exists out there called "indian joints." This describes loose joints that were typically found within Indians, believed to be the result of bad nutrition.

He certainly doesn't suffer from that. But it can make it more likely to happen again.

A few other things to consider before anyone pencils in Robert's name to play again this season--no one in history has ever disclocated an ankle before and returned to play that year.

Also, our W-L will play a role in any decision. If Kirk looks great, you wouldn't think of removing him. On the other hand, if we are out of playoff contention, and the season is meaningless, you wouldn't risk RG3's health either.

Definitely a lot of factors in play here.

A knee is not an ankle. I know that in general, a dislocation can stretch ligaments regardless of joint involved - I'm specifically asking about ankle joints. Where did you get the information about ankle dislocation and returning within the same season? That seems like it would be difficult to determine? I'd also wonder if those stats are looking at just a dislocated ankle or those that involved fractures? Apparently, it is rare not to have an accompanying fracture - so if this proves to be true in Robert's case that may be a very lucky break.

I would also be curious to see if there is a pretty simple stabilizing brace that could help eliminate the possibility of dislocation happening again, but that would not significantly limit mobility (such as a stiff neoprene sleeve)?

I'm not sure I agree on the W-L record determining whether we would see Robert again this season. I think it depends on Gruden's coaching philosophy. Some coaches adopt a strict 'you will not lose your job due to injury' policy. Some don't. I expect that at today's news conference, if there's any chance Robert is ready to return this season, that question will be asked. And I'm betting if it is asked that Gruden would respond that Robert is the starting QB and that as soon as he is ready to return, he'll be the starter again.

Why hasn't anyone else asked this question? Do we really need to consider just putting in turf? I love grass fields but seriously, numerous people complaining about the field including Andre's injury.

The issue is that it may not have been an ankle dislocation but a subtalar dislocation, which apparently has very different (and less severe) implications.

I have always felt we need to have turf like they do up in Cheatlle. It is soft, looks like grass, and you dont have to worry about the elements getting to it.

The biggest injury of the weekend belongs to Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. By real time video analysis, RG3 dislocated his ankle. By definition, structural integrity of his ankle joint is violated with either a displaced fracture or complete ligament tear.
At the moment, there is no definite answer to when RG3 will return.

Although a dislocation without fracture is rare, I doubt RG3 broke his ankle with the dislocation or we would have already heard about surgery, as it is often best to reduce and stabilize the ankle immediately. If he doesn’t have a loss of bone integrity, Griffin most certainly has ligamentous disruption. With his mechanism of injury, he likely has complete deltoid ligament tear/avulsion.

Assuming a dislocation without fracture, there is typically no surgery needed, but still a minimum of six to eight weeks for recovery. We all know a bad ankle sprain can take four weeks for full recovery. Think of this injury as a severe ankle sprain with complete disruption of ligaments. Barring articular cartilage damage, the injury should not be career threatening and Griffin should recover fully.

MMMD 2: RG3 as tough as they come

I would not use the words “injury prone” to describe Robert Griffin III. I would say that he is the ultimate tough guy and team player.

Major joint dislocations are extremely painful. I wouldn’t begrudge a player if he were to collapse immediately and drop the ball. I have seen this happen. Instead RG3 heroically finishes the play and not only retains possession, but gets his team a first down.

When a player suffers a significant or painful injury, his reaction cannot be anticipated. RG3 dislocated his ankle and continued to play football. He took an additional step, threw for a 19-yard completion, and then hoped on his one good leg out of bounds without ever putting weight back on the injured left side again before falling.

I am not sure how many other players in the league would do the same thing for his team when suffering such a painful injury.

For some comparison:

Jags TE Mercedes Lewis suffered a high ankle sprain yesterday and is out for a reported 6-8 weeks.

Did RGIII hurt his ankle earlier than thought in Sunday's game? - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Washington Redskins XTRA - Richmond Times-Dispatch Coverage Of Training Camp And The Regular Season

oh, wow. You think he might have hurt it then but like in the Ravens game just tried to play thru it?

If so, I would be very disappointed that he hadn't learned better than to do that.

Well that's not gonna help Polumbus.

Turned away with his attention elsewhere?

Boone, this was from last night, prior to what we've learned today.

Not to make a Federal case over it, but he said 'very rarely' and he seemed to just be making a generalization. That's a far cry from 'No QB has ever come back in the same season from....'. We don't even have an official detailed report on the exact injury so I think it's best to wait and see what the team doctors say.

Just read a report on Rotoworld where the guy just basically wrote off RG3's career. Really? C'mon man! We don't even know the extent and people are basically saying he's done here in Washington. Not buying that for a second. We all know RG3 will work his ass off to get back on the field, that's never been a problem of his. I just think it's crazy that so many people have just given this job to Cousins. Makes no sense to me.
