When Will the Redskins Learn?

because they scored more than 6 points?

because their coach did more than call end arounds and reverses?

I am not sure what you are getting at here.

The next time Dan and Bruce show up at a fan rally those in attendance should be chanting "we want offensive lineman".

Lol.....Seattle gave up more sacks than we did last year, and they won the SB.

They wish they had our O-line problems.

They don't use their O-line as an excuse. For some reason, many Redskins fans do.

It's not just sacks McD5 - Griffin rarely has time to throw without having to leave the pocket. We do not have average pass protection. It's pretty bad.

Our ST blocking needs to be fixed. Our O-line is average in pass-blocking compared to the rest of the league. I don't know why this fallacy keeps being brought up.

Why do we feel the need to use our O-line as an excuse? The O-line isn't the problem, and it shouldn't prevent us from winning games.

We had 3 sacks this weekend.

15 teams out of 28 teams suffered 3 or more sacks this weekend. Some had 5 sacks. That puts us right at average. Even a little better than average.

The difference? Philly gets sacked 5 times, and still scores 34 points, and wins.

So how is it that Philly can get sacked 5 times, and score 34 points?

And why isn't everyone in Philly complaining about their terrible offensive line?

Griffin eluded at least 3 sacks, had one intentional grounding, and 2 more that he launched out into the crowd to avoid sacks... the 3 sack stat is misleading.

That being said, not all of it was on the O-line. JJ Watt is the best defensive (if not over all) player in the NFL. He does what he wants and you have to deal with it. Some poor play calls and bad schematics led to a lot of the QB pressure yesterday and it's a learning curve. The O-Line is the weak point in our offense. There's no disputing that.

You can add up hurries, sacks, blocked passes, all of it.

It all adds up to us having average pass-blocking. Not bad, and not great. Just average.

Some teams win divisions and SBs with our O-line or worse. And, some don't.

Those winning teams are better in other areas. Not the O-line.

No ones saying we have to have a top 5 OL to be successful, but pass protection is bad brother. Griffins got the bruises to prove it. I don't know what else to say. We can just agree to respectfully disagree.

Strongly disagree with McD5. Average is generous. The left side helps a lot, but the right side is so bad, it renders Trent Williams awesomeness moot.

Well statistically, it's average. And other QBS also avoid sacks, run for their lives, throw the ball away, etc. Maybe even better than we do.

So either the majority of teams in the league have bad O-lines, which is possible, or we are just looking at an average O-line and placing fault in the wrong place.

I don't know McD5. That may be a little generous. I watched some games after ours to see how long QB's had. The right side of our line is definitely below average. However, RG's slow decision making is making it worse. I watched Manning, counting from snap, and he gets the ball out in less than 2 seconds much of the time. Now that may be a matter of not having quick timing throws in the arsenal, but I don't think so. It's going to be hard for RG to really develop if the line can give him some time. He doesn't have pocket skills, to the line deficiency is magnified. I think it's a much bigger deal, him having to learn to be a pocket passer, than we imagined. He's smart and talented but saddled with a huge disadvantage. How many QB's have come into the league with no pocket skills, and succeeded? I hope he survives long enough to see it through.

Stats can be very deceiving, especially when it comes to things like blocking. I'm not sure if you're in denial or what, but you can't really be telling us the oline passed the eye test for you last night? Yes he was only sacked 3 times, but he was hit on almost every throw. The oline allowed a blocked punt and extra point in the same night. How often does that happen?

I understand that Watt is a beast, but this isn't anything new.

Every team (except maybe Seattle) has a weakness. No one's really perfect. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Seattle give the Dolphins undefeated season a run this year.

But just because every team has at least one hole or weakness, it doesn't prevent them from winning.

Foles was sacked 5 times, ran for his life numerous others, and threw the ball away to avoid more sacks.

That didn't make it impossible for them to score 34 points.

So what's that tell you? That they are better in other areas. Might be coaching, QBing, defense, special teams. But the O-line doesn't stop them.

So Gruden's Honeymoon is just the preseason for many... I always felt you give a guy at least a season. I'm impressed with the way he handles the media. He's direct but also has a knows how to use "coach speak" with the baited questions. Shanahan seemed to get baited rather easily with comments that caused turmoil when he could have avoided it without stirring the pot... See Mcnabb, Haynesworth or Griffin as examples.

The new era of free agency hasn't been kind for us fans either. So far we've spent a bunch of money and picks for qbs that didn't pan out here for one reason or another. Seriously though without looking it up how many quaterbacks have left our team in the last 20 yrs have been traded or waived to other teams and became a Superbowl QB? Rich Gannon, Stan Humphries, Brad Johnson, off the top of my head. Trent Green came close I think. We need To develop our Quarterbacks...We need to hope Griffin is that guy. We have been enduring bad play from a long line of qbs. Griff's career stats are pretty favorable to most we've had last season included. If we look bad against the Jags my tone will change. Hey Griffin is making some accurate passes in the pocket outside the pocket...I get it Where are the Td's? I really do but logic tells me that he's showing great improvement under difficult conditions. I say that pass he threw was money and inbounds...but it shows as an incomplete pass.

I don't hear anyone beating on Gruden unless saying he looked like a rookie head coach at times is considered a harsh assessment. I think most fans believe he can get the job done long term or are at least willing to give him a couple of years to see what he can do.

We've seen all these players underperform. We don't even know what Gruden is capable of yet so yeah, I'm not gonna bag on him until he gets a couple of games under his belt.

McD5's denial about our OL problems can be summed up in two words... Smell test.

If you want me to pare it down to two letters??? P. U.

I will add that when the OL does hold up for Griffin, he ****s it up so that does make them look bad but geezus he's got happy feet, happy eyes, happy ears etc...

What really gets me is we only scored 6 points yesterday, I hope this isn't a year of only being able to score 10-17 points a game and hope the defense is great....... I know the fumbles costed us, but not being able to score just plain sucks

I was speaking of the play calling being questioned...it may have been in other threads and the talking heads as well...

The saving grace (little that it is) is that at least it was from a TD and not 2 FG's.

that is one way of looking at things. another...some might argue also rational....way of looking at things is: you line up your weaknesses, rank order them, and start at the top of the list when it comes to fixing things. pass pro has been a problem for a long, long time. the team knew that the day Gruden was hired - one reason they signed Lavao, drafted Moses and Long, got rid of the former center. IMO, the plan is in place already to move the draftees into starting positions later this season.

As a point of reference:

Offensive line in Philadelphia: The Eagles are going to be without four of their top seven offensive linemen after losing tackle Allen Barbre and guard Evan Mathis to injury. A cascade of injuries at the same position can threaten the entire team.

They gave up 5 sacks and scored 34 points last week.

This week, and for likely several more weeks, they have almost no one to block. Let's see if they can still put up 30 this week.
