"Red Mesa High School is located in Red Mesa, Arizona, which is about 25 miles southwest of the Four Corners. The school is located on the Navajo Reservation and is a public school. We have nearly 100% Navajo students are coming from low-income families. The students are bussed in everyday from as far as 60 miles away. We have approximately 196 students, ranging from freshman to seniors."

Mission Statement:

"To provide quality education for successful interaction in the changing technological world while enhancing Navajo culture"

Not going to lie, there is a reason I don't post often. I don't like engaging in a hostile disagreement. I've noticed certain ones will be so, especially between specific people, and it isn't worth it to me.

The people that have it happen are perfectly amicable when they aren't engaging each other, or talking about specific topics. I honestly have very little issue with almost any member when just one on one. There are just certain combinations that are just oil and water though. And unfortunately it seemed like removing the Political forum just caused it to bleed over here more.

It's unfortunate. I know there were times that some people would respond, and I would see where it was going and just walk away. There is no point in engaging certain diatribes, and I see the best way to deal with it is to ignore it. I do hope this site continues on, as I have enjoyed reading it for a very long time, pretty much since it first began. I want to be able to keep coming here, as the overall level of discourse is so much higher than average. Some people just have to learn to back off though, and realize there is no gain to getting the last word.
 
I'm sure the team lawyers will bring up all the predominately Native American schools who have a Redskins mascot. Clearly, if it is a universal slur equal to that of the N word, these schools wouldn't have these mascots.

I'm not confident about winning the appeal though, I really don't trust federal judges these days to keep politics and legal rulings separate.

There's a reason why I've avoided places like the PA like a plague. I recognized a long time ago my inability to shut my trap when engaged in certain topics. That is compounded by my contempt for certain viewpoints and my inability to be respectful enough to NOT offend holders of those opposing viewpoints. So the easy solution for ALL was for me to just avoid those situations. Easy solution and a self serving and peaceful out. When I do that I don't get upset and the internet doesn't facilitate my own personal insanity. It's just too bad some folks can't adopt the same philosophy, it winds up being buzzkill for an entire community of people. Sad because like Tenshi said, these people are fine one on one.
 
The internet and social media have been wonderful tools that have forever changed the world as we know it. They can also be a sewer that houses the worst that the human condition can be. Spend 5 minutes in any ESPN comments section if you need convincing.

I once opined here that: we all know when we are being dicks, so don't be a dick. Apparently I was wrong.

I don't post here anymore because of the very things that this thread has exposed. The best that this site offered was a smaller town feel, the worst that it offers is also that same smaller town feel. Dominant, prolific, personalities have a way of overwhelming atmospheres anywhere. In a smaller pond it can become unbearable. What is great for the individual is often not so great for the community. I have spent a lifetime building and maintaining a very successful business through multiple decades. My most important compass has always been to create an environment that protects the good of the many, even at the expense of the few.

Some don't like that. Tough. I tell them to either respect the rules that we lay out or to find another place to spend their money. And I am much better off for it.

I'm sure this sounds preachy, I guess there is really no way to state an opinion on this subject without sounding so. I imagine some will identify with my sentiments. I imagine others will take offense. If so, I only have one thought.

I haven't read all these posts but I think I just experienced the animosity the debate causes. Its destroying the Redskins fandom/nation. I sent my Redskins bud the lawyers notice, he called me and acted like he never read it. All he could say was "I told you it was going to change and change soon". He wouldn't even let me have a word in, all he wanted to do was be right and say change the name to the "Americans". so we end up arguing with my best bud and it left me mad all the rest of the day. Stupid for it to let it get to me. I ended up saying something just to shut him up that if the name changes I am done with the team and NFL. That did it. Because after all, we don't care about the guy in the uniform. they come and go, but the team stays, now..........who knows? As old as I am, we bet that it wouldn't change in my lifetime. But then I realized that's a lose/lose bet. If I die first I win, but then I'm dead so I don't win. Stupid.

I'll never discuss the issue again for my own mental health.
 
Well stated, Chris.

I fear we've lost many potentially great members over the years as a result of allowing our deep and abiding distaste for 'disciplining' (and as necessary removing) individual members to trump our wish to build a larger, thriving community of people to whom the BGO mission statement actually means something.

We turned a corner earlier this year though. We tried it the other way; we tried hard, for a very long time. And the honest truth is we aren't happy about the lessons we've learned. Losing members is sad and a damn shame, particularly in a small community.

But at the risk of leaning on an overused (but utterly apt) cliche ... we are no longer putting the needs of the few, or the one, ahead of the needs of the many.

Here's hoping the course correction brings favorable winds.
 
Chris - we need you here brother ...we have culled the herd some (3 permanent bans) and that alone is going to make a difference. There are at least 3 others who are at risk and although I consider all three friends, we will not hesitate to move those members on too - permanently. If it happens, you guys (and I believe you know who you are) it will be your own damn fault. I am tired of the excuses, it's always the other member provoking, or it's 'just the way I am - sorry'. That's no longer good enough. We would rather have 20 active members who love and respect each other than continue to see the dysfunctional nastiness. We're done talking or trying to save people from themselves - honestly, it's embarrassing to even have to have these conversations. Grow the eff up and post in accordance with our values or get off our site. If we're going to be like every other out of control site out there, there's no point in keeping the site going.

And for the vast majority of you who always do the right thing and are universally respectful to your peers, my apologies for wasting your time.

Clearly they don't get it. No worries, though ... the Forces of Good are mobilized now and will soon educate these people about how they are insulting and disparaging themselves and force them to change the name.

I've never seen the kinds of effects that the "name change" has had on Redskins fans (not just here, but everywhere on the internet), especially those who are good friends and/or strong acquaintances. Maybe I was hoping some would tone it down due to the strong feelings it brings to any debate. Maybe I was hoping everyone would be unified for a common purpose. Maybe I was naïve enough to think that it would cause no problems in here or elsewhere.

Do I have strong opinions on the subject? Sure. For whatever reason, I chose to sit out of these debates - not sure why, but it probably has something to do with my last sentence in the previous paragraph.

However, I do have one request. The days of bashing Dan Snyder should really come to an end. The last time he truly meddled on the football side was December 16, 2009 - the day before Bruce Allen was hired and Vinny Cerrato was fired. I realize that he is not the nicest person in the room, but he cares deeply about this football team. Just saying.

As for the spats in here... Having a certain kind of utopia would be nice, but there is nothing wrong with a friendly disagreement over team issues, game time decisions, roster moves, what to do on the next play, etc. We seem to do our best when having such discussions and debates.

I would like to see a poll on what you would like for the team to do with this name situation. No changes? Red potato thing? Keep the name, but without the logo? Change the name to a particular tribe (I am a bit partial to this one with having a very small bit of Powhatan in me - but will never claim to be a native American)? Go to something completely and totally different?

No, BGO shouldn't go anywhere. We need it and it needs us. With that in mind, who is with me on helping out this month or next month if you are short on cash for now?

I hate when threads go off topic, one of the reasons i tend to stay inactive for long periods.

But as has been said before me, It amazes me that grown men/women can not remain civil to each other especialy on the internet.

Now I fully understand that subjects are emotive and tempers can get flayed, but why waste our energy fighting each other when their are bigger fights out there to be fought.

Being Scottish i am also fully aware that words said in jest or meant in jest can be easily mis construed. I often type a full post then erase it because I realise that it can be misconstrued.

I've been hearing a lot of white people mention the trail of tears and I'm not sure how to react. My first thought is "you're not even a freaking native!" Followed by "every race has had slaves and tried to 'cleanse'"

But I'm not really sure the best way to tell them to shut the **** up without actually saying that.
