Meanwhile, back in reality ...

I'm glad to see we're returning to the idea of practicing with/against another team. All those years in Latrobe doing that with the Steelers always seemed to make so much SENSE. Beat on someone else. Measure your guys against someone else. Observe and study someone else's protocols. Learn stuff. That in this case we'll be doing so with and against the most successful franchise the league has seen in the last decade-plus is icing on the cake.
 
Yep, and our first time head coach can learn from one of the best.

I think that this is great, beating on your own teammates will cause people to get pissed with each other. My guess is some of those grudges then go all season long...

Joe Gibbs will never die! And you better go sing 58 Hail To The Redskins for saying belicheat is a currently a better coach. Joe did more with less than any coach ever.

I have to disagree. What Gibbs was able to do with such lackluster talent was amazing...2 playoff appearances in 4 years, a playoff victory with a pretty talentless squad and Todd Collins and Mark Brunnell at QB.
 
Gibbs was the greatest HC of all time imho.

However, I think the belief that he left because of the Sean tragedy, or to spend more time at home may not be completely accurate.

On the other hand, do you know how many interviews Gibbs did during his 2nd tenure? Thousands. Making any judgment based on any single interview would be pretty short-sighted. The only bone I've ever had to pick with Gibbs is that I think he quit for reasons other than what he *officially* gave. Personally (and it's just my opinion), I think he felt he'd taken the team as far as he could unless he was willing to stick around for an entire rebuild. And he wasn't. And I'll also bet, given he was and is, first and foremost, a Christian man, that although he may have been personally grateful and beholden to Daniel Snyder's generosity, he didn't think much of the man when it came down to it. Let's face it - Dan Snyder may not be the devil incarnate, but he's spent a lot of time building a reputation as a cunning and heartless financial wizard - and he's earned that reputation. Gibbs was an old man at the start of his 2nd stint, and he was a very tired old man when he hung it up. That he was able to get the team back to a winning footing at all, with at best marginal talent, was a tribute to how good a coach he was even at that age.
 
I agree with that.

And I bet working with Dan and Vinny probably wasn't easy. I bet Gibbs shook his head a few times just listening to the stuff that came out of Vinny's mouth.

I don't. I think that between Sean and his grandson it was the time for him to leave. He is a very emotional and gentle man..those things shake a man like him to the core.
 
And if you've had enough and just didn't feel like you could muster up the commitment level required to achieve the 2nd time what you'd achieved the 1st time, that's a reason that no one is ever going to question. Lots of people in life experience medical crises with loved ones and don't retire as a result.

It's possible that's all it was and you're 100% right. But I had the sense during the last half if that last season that he was tired and his heart wasn't in it anymore. Not faulting him - he gave Redskins fans more joy during both runs than any other coach ever.
