DRAFT DAY (3)

Jimbo, I've been saying for years that I'm clearly among the minority of 'obsessed' NFL fans, in that I'm less likely than most to openly question and/or disapprove of the specific moves these professional evaluators make, armed as they are with the benefit of knowing exactly what skill sets they're looking for, in the specific context of the roster they envision now and into the future.

Don't me wrong ... in this case we're talking about a 5th round pick. If they'd taken this guy with their 2nd rounder, yeah ... I'd probably be a little less sanguine. :cool:

But I do continue to find it interesting how sure so many of my fellow fan obsessors are to substitute their judgments on personnel matters for the those of the guys in the room.

I look at this pick and I think I can see where THEY think he might fit a specific role. Great hands are a great option to have as a 3rd or 4th option guy when it comes to moving the chains. I'm thinking that's specifically what they envision this guy hopefully developing into. I trust that they've done their homework on his character and work ethic.

In a couple of years we'll know if they hit on a 5th.

We could have Ozzie Newsome and Vince Lombardi drafting and fans would still question every pick. It's just the nature of draft day.

In the past, we've spent high picks on receivers who all ended up as busts, meanwhile other teams have found sleeper WR's in the later rounds who actually contribute quickly.

So I'd love to reverse that role, and find the late gems of a receiver, as other teams have.

I'm not criticizing it, btw. I'm not shy about sharing my opinion on a whole lot of things in life ... but scouting a couple thousand college football players every year, and thinking to have a good better sense of how they fit into the fluid puzzle that is an NFL roster than the guys who have spent their lives earning that position? Not one I've ever been comfortable with.

Understood Om. Perhaps they ARE on the right track but rookie head coaches often take a little time to find their way, especially with trying to build a team that was 3-13 the year before. I'm all for creating competition because that's what guys in Gruden's position need to do. The problem is, there are too many holes elsewhere that need QUALITY depth or guys capable of starting. Is receiver REALLY one of those positions? Sure, they could have had this guy rated way up there but based on this team's recent draft history, especially compared to some of the top teams in the league, why wouldn't we second guess our FO?

Watching this draft for the past three days, I look at what other teams are doing, especially the playoff teams, and think, "That was a really good pick for them. They filled a need and got good value". I haven't really said that with the Skins this draft. I also realize that doesn't really mean anything at this point. It won't for a couple of years. I guess the frustrating part is, it seems our FO hasn't really done much better than what I wanted the past few years. I have no choice but to sit back and watch and hope and pray they know what they're doing. I just wish they'd prove, once and for all, they REALLY know what they're doing and it doesn't seem like as big a crapshoot as it really is.

So I admittedly know nothing about most of these prospects, but I see that Daniel McCullers a DT from Tennessee who is 6'7" 352 lbs is still available and has a 3rd round grade. Am I missing something, or would he be worth a shot with the 6th round pick coming up?

Anyone know why he's dropped so far, is it questions about his work ethic?
 
Just stepped in from doing some work outside.

I didn't expect Moss to make the squad before the draft. Now I think Moss, Hank and Robinson will all be fighting for a job.

So we gain a 7th rounder...so what! There will be plenty of UDFA to choose from, did we really need another 7th?

as always...an erudite point-of-view.

there's another way of looking at it :) of course.

some FOs are better than others at forming a strategy, building a plan, finding the inputs necessary to make the right decisions.

No idea where this FO sits...so...while I have some reservations and some positives.....like everyone....just going to have to wait and see.

so...some things are starting to clarify on offense:

- the scheme is changing....big time

- we are moving away from read option

- we are moving away from zone blocking (by degree)

- we are moving back toward power football

- we are moving toward more traditional QB in the pocket. we will have designed rolls and all that...just less.

Do the new guys on O fit the bill? Don't know. Who is Moses gonna be blocking game 1? JJ Watt? I think folks are under-estimating the time it's gonna take to adjust to two major changes on offense: new scheme, rookies integrating into the line.

As for defense.....no comment. I think it's definitely gonna be better than last year. how much better?

We are rebuilding IMO. Thank God we have a quality QB.
 
Some of you act like we drafted a QB, 2 WRs, a RB, and a kicker so far. We seriously upgraded our OL (a primary goal), took a flyer on LB who someone in our scouting dept thinks is the real deal, snatched a talented CB to boost our secondary woes, and took a chance on a WR late in a draft chock damn full of WR talent.

What are you all bitching about?

And Elephant, we found Morris in the 6th round - you really think extra 7th round picks are worthless? We clearly think we can get the guy we want with a later pick, isn't that just being smart with your picks.

I could see all of the negativity if we were a horrible franchise. We're not. We did win the division 2 years ago guys. We do have a franchise QB, great RB, lots of other talent, and an exciting new coach. Take a deep breath.

Didn't we only move back 8 spots in the sixth, and we got an additional seventh?
 
I've come to realize that no matter what move is made with a group as big as ours someone is always going to find fault.

Now instead of fighting about it I'm just listening and moving on. If people get so set because of a draft and not waiting to see how they play I'm not going to try and change them

But, for me, I see us getting the big uglies we need, the LBs we want, and then taking BPA in these later rounds
 
Wonder if we might grab the Baylor safety?

This sounds like BPA:

Washington Redskins: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor: A Grade

Running back is not a need, but I'm giving the Redskins an "A" for value. Lache Seastrunk could have easily been chosen in the third round. He fell because of the perception that he can't catch passes, but the Baylor offense didn't ask him to do that. He looked good in the receiving drills at the Combine, so it's ridiculous that he slipped this far.
 
You can never have too many good running backs. I like the value pick there - he was the 'BPA' still out there on several analysts lists...
 
I really liked Seastrunk. I thought maybe he didn't come out because he hadn't been drafted yet. Great value here.

Maybe Gruden isn't sold on Helu and Royster.
