REDSKINS SIGN G SHAWN LAUVAO, WR ANDRE ROBERTS

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent guard Shawn Lauvao (luh-VOW) and unrestricted free agent wide receiver Andre Roberts. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Lauvao (6-3, 315) was originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round (92nd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 53 regular season games with 44 starts, including a stretch of 32 consecutive starts across the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2013, Lauvao appeared in 11 regular season games, all starts.

Lauvao, 26, played collegiately at Arizona State from 2006-09, appearing in 42 games, finishing his career with 33 consecutive starts.

Lauvao was born on Oct. 26, 1987, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the city’s Farrington H.S., where he earned first-team all-state honors as a senior.

Roberts (5-11, 195) was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (88th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. In four seasons with the Cardinals from 2010-13, he appeared in 62 games with 35 starts, compiling 182 receptions for 2,123 receiving yards (11.7 avg.) with 11 receiving touchdowns.

In 2012, Roberts posted career highs in nearly every statistical category, producing personal bests in receptions (64), receiving yards (759) and receiving touchdowns (five). His five receiving touchdowns were a team high, and his totals fell only seven receptions and 39 receiving yards shy of matching Larry Fitzgerald’s team lead despite playing one fewer game.

Roberts played collegiately at The Citadel from 2006-09, starting 35 of the 45 games in which he appeared during his career. During his career, he established school records for career receptions (285), receiving yards (3,743), receiving TDs (37), 100-yard receiving games (17), punt return yards (1,160), punt return average (13.9) and all-purpose yards (5,215).

Roberts, 26, attended Spring Valley H.S. in Columbia, S.C., where he earned all-region and all-area honors
and led the Vikings to a regional championship as a senior. He was born on Jan. 9, 1988.

So is Lauvao intended to be C or take Chester's spot? Either way I like it.

Rumor is Liechebsteghgddgsyjn (sp?) will move to center. I think this guy is depth.

what lanky said is what's going around the beat reporters.

he's expected to compete with tom compton for backup spot.

I think you mean Bruce Campbell is linked to a backup position to compete with Compton. At least that's what I heard.

As for Licht being shifted to center...that sounds so ridiculous to me...he weighs 280 if he's lucky.

Is that who it was?

Damnit, I think my brain has stopped working. I'm getting all sorts of crap wrong and it's gotten me into trouble at least once today.

There are weird rumors coming that Kory is moving to C... wasn't that his natural position? Didn't we essentially have 3 centers on our line last year, 2 playing other positions?

I think they wanted LeRiebus to play center at some point. I have heard the same rumors but I just can't see him being any better than Monty, even though Monty does get blown up at the point of attack, Licht isn't much better. I really wish they would bite the bullet, make an offer for Mack and see if Cleveland will let him walk.

What does the transition tag entail in terms of compensation?

well...Serv......we know Browns fans aren't sad to see this guy go.

17 mil for a guy whose CEILING is average? LOL

Pro-bowl guards get $9-10M per, so what we gave him ($4-4.5M per) is in fact average guard salary.

That's the going rate for a middle-of-the-road O-Lineman these days, especially with the cap increase. Our line looks as cheap as it has been because we've had scrubs at every position except LT.

The signing of JD Walton late last year was supposed to be a Shanny experiment for C, but he has now signed elsewhere.

Move Alphabet to C, with Lauvao on his left and Chester on his right. Trent obviously stays at LT, so RT is up for grabs.

But the real weak spot on the line to me is Chester.

Moving Korey to center and starting Lauvao or LeRibeus or a FA at LG doesn't solve the issue of interior penetration.

seems like every time we sign a player from another team, ALL the ex-fans are glad to see him go :(

And a lot of that is rationalization of the 'he was never that good' and 'I never liked him anyway' variety. It's not necessarily an accurate reflection of the players worth or abilities.

and a lot of Redskins fans were glad to see Carlos Rogers go because he wasn't good at catching the ball.... if the guy can upgrade the team i'm for it. Nobody would baulk at any of the other lineman (except Trent) leaving, so I like bringing in mid-level guys in here to compete. The line can be successful with 4 mid-pack lineman and 1 pro bowler as long as they're the right fit for the scheme.
