i'm a ms reseller and i can't get you a price better than amazon.

I, personally, wouldn't have done that because violating network use rules is not a good idea. Especially when your career is in that field... if you can't play by established rules when you're expected to understand the importance of said rules, why would anyone in any position of authority/power trust you?

that being said, if I had ventured that far into it I would just fix it myself because I'm rather confident in my own ability to do that. Admitting you broke equipment attempting to subvert rules probably isn't going to go over very well, but who knows.

2) And if configuring the machine and applications is part of the equation

3) And if the org provides an app to suspend the capability anyway

point being I messed up the command string and the issue was whether I confessed about it (i.e., risk being embarrassed).

in the event, I take it then that you are totally opposed to white hat hacking....and would never practice such yourself.

wow. really HP? your new 'Customer For Life' program just took two people that would only recommend HP servers and we're now no longer recommending HP servers at all.

and there are many more that will follow suite.

what an awful business decision. your most profitable division is going to take a huge hit.

IBM sucks, Dell sucks, and now HP has bullshit firmware policies. Running out of server options here... a good chance for someone to take over the market...

white hat hacking is awesome, and grey hat is pretty neat too. some of the most important security contributions have come from it. it's something i'd love to get into to. i think my knowledge of systems combined with my desire/enjoyment for tinkering would make me an excellent person for that kind of work :)

but there's a difference between being a responsible white hat hacker (even gray) and fiddling with your machine to circumvent company policies.

and you know my company's policy? :)

I placed a hint for you previously - they have an app that disables the capability.

fully agree on complying with policy. which rules out white, black and gray hacking of any kind, by anyone, unless explicitly granted and scoped.

so, if you desire to enhance the usability of a machine, is it ok to write a script for this? is it ok to reset default application configuration settings? is it ok to use drop boxes for work material? is it ok to use machines for non-business related activities? is it ok synchronize with personal PDAs/mobile devices (e.g., contact lists)? and on and on.

not attacking you. what you see in industry right now are two threads: companies enforcing acceptable use policies; companies adapting to what employees are doing anyway (e.g., BYOD).

In fact, I thought you were currently not employed, so I figured the whole thing was a hypothetical, a story from the past, or maybe something that came up in an interview...

You asked questions and gave limited information. I gave answers based on the information I believed I had. If i gave a bad answer, or was interpreted the information wrong, then so be it.

checking out iTunes radio... so far not bad. I'll have to give it a week, then maybe i can do a little write up on it.

first thing that impressed me - you can tune your radio selection on a sliding scale, one end is "hits" the other end is "discovery". So you can put in an artist and, supposedly, have pretty good control over whether you get well known, hit songs or more obscure music that fits the style of the song/artist you created the station with.

if it works as advertised that's significantly better than pandora's 'add more variety' button.

you didn't read my whole post. not probing you. working around the edges of an interesting problem: how policy translates into enforcement. not always a facile matter.

anywho, agree whole-heartedly with your core idea. follow the policy. wish Mr Snowden had done so.

Ah :)

Yeah... there's some interesting ideas/problems with it. I work in mostly small(er) environments so I don't have to worry about it too much.

I'm also a MSP and not running my own IT department, so I get to conveniently rest a lot of higher end responsibility on the people over ruling my advice for their own reasons, so it just isn't a huge deal for me.
 
just completed OTW's bandit, all 25 levels. was not hard at all.
now i have to finish natas. i'm on level 17. i stopped to go do bandit when i started getting stuck on the unix tools.
 
My daughter fell and she cracked her Nexus 7 screen. Anyone know of a repair service thats reasonable to send it too?

Another tech question... We would like to replace our bulky PC with something smaller and more unobtrusive. We only use the PC to run our router through currently, no monitor Hooked up or anything. Does a product exist that does the same thing without the need for a desktop?

what is the pc's purpose? is it:
wall jack -> modem -> computer -> router
or
wall jack -> modem ->router ->computer

or something els?

You can configure the router to a laptop through an ethernet cable if using the router strictly for wifi is what you're attempting to do. Just unhook the desktop, run an ethernet cable from laptop to router, then reset the router, configure it for the laptop, and disconnect the laptop once you finish.
