Gruden situational awareness

Rather than an individual thread for each thing Gruden does/says that prompts one of us to post, thought I'd try to set up a single, master thread. So, as we build a picture of this guy...I'll start off with a couple observations:

- like the message he is sending out. it is very obvious that from top to bottom in this franchise they are fixed on changing the culture. this will take time but is, IMO, one of the most important changes we are seeing unfold. the message was delivered loud and clear yesterday.

- in one of his interviews, Gruden had good things to say about the o-line. I know he's new and has to say all the right things...but...cmon!

- the media (e.g., PTF) is already stirring the bushes over the fact that Gruden and RGIII haven't talked. the dude is on vacation in HA! twits. way down in the weeds and meaningless. there will be plenty of time later.

- by listening to the local and national media...you'd never think that Marvin Lewis actually coached the Bengals to those playoffs!

- not enough time yet to start guessing how Gruden will reorient FA/draft priorities. one has to assume that has been discussed already

A little birdie that watches film and knows a lot about football said yesterday:
"I think Gruden will keep the offensive line in tact... I know that'll surprise a lot of people, but they flat out grade out significantly better than fans think"

In short - they're a good run blocking line that is adequate in pass blocking. Most of the pass protection problems revolved around Griffin fleeing the pocket too much/too quickly (compare Cousins and how he worked in the pocket vs Griffin and how he worked in th

Don't shoot the messenger... just telling you what was said.

My biggest question about Gruden is clock management. I think it's something that great coaches excel at, and all others fail at far too often. We've had terrible clock management; even in Gibbs 2.0.

As far what we can measure right now - I love the way the organization has handled the whole thing.
Waiting until after the season to fire Shanahan
Letting him talk to reporters
Keeping Dan out of the firing, and search, and hiring press conferences
Taking time to conduct the search
Selecting a guy that, despite having a last name that is a 'big splash', is otherwise just a respected coordinator widely considered to be worthy of a shot at a HC job right now.

Top to bottom - the way it should be.

The national media is going to hate no matter what we do. I've said this before - We have a long track record of being a complete train wreck of an organization. Any outsider with a lick of sense is going to bet against the Redskins on the long haul. Why would you not? We've been a complete joke for what - 15, 20 years now? The safe bet is to bet against the organization, so that's what majority of national talking heads are going to do.

And they're right to do so. Respect is earned, not demanded like some seem to think. This organization hasn't earned a lick of respect over the last 15 years.

Of course the media would question why Gruden and Griffin haven't talk. They cant wait for a poor choice of words from Griffin to create some sense of artificial disharmony! They were parsing yesterday for 10 minutes yesterday whether Gruden said RG3 us 'a starter' or 'the starter' :)

we all know RT has to be upgraded. that's the first thing I'm looking for. Keep TP as a reserve who can fill any position except center.

Flashback: Gruden outwits Haslett | Comcast SportsNet Washington

On the first play from scrimmage, wide receiver Mohamed Sanu lined up behind center in a Wildcat formation. The rookie launched a 73-yard touchdown pass to a wide opn A. J. Green.

The play worked because Gruden knew what defense the Redskins would be in. A few days after the game he was on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“We had a pretty good indication that they were gonna be in Cover-0 when we went wildcat with whoever we had back there other than a quarterback, whether it’s a running back or wide receiver,” Gruden said (h/t DC Sports Bog). “It took a little bit of time, but the free safety came out of the middle of the field, and came in the box, and we knew we had A.J. one-on-one against a safety.”

This wasn’t a play that the Bengals had sitting in their playbook. It was designed to go against Haslett and the Redskins.

“Actually, it was just for this game,” Gruden said. “Because Coach Haslett, I was just watching their wildcat reel. And every wildcat snap they had, they played Cover-0. And I’ve been waiting for it.”

He is able and willing to watch reels of opposing coaches tendencies and design plays that work to take advantage of the weaknesses of that tendency.

Okay....

I infer from that a willingness to modify, to adjust, to let information about the opposition-at least to a certain extent-determine his scheme based on responding to how they operate.

This in opposition to an almost religious faith in the "The Scheme" regardless of situation or style of opposition.

I would put this in the classification of characteristics that I would expect of someone with a good sense of situational awareness.

Plus 1.

Shanahan and Co consistently failed to counter other coaches' halftime adjustments.

Would it be great to win some games on guile and preparation and good clock management for a change?

You bet.

That was probably the most frustrating part of watching the team the past few years. How many times did we hold leads and look dominant at times for 2-3 quarters only to watch it go to hell. Romo and Eli both did it in just about every single game of the Shanahan era and Romo chokes against everybody except us. Maybe Haslett convinced Allen all those bad defensive calls were Shanahan trying to protect the lead with the prevent and maybe it was.

The message dam near had me sporting wood....

Pierre Garcon’s first interaction with his new coach came from the set of “Fox Football Daily,” where Garcon was a scheduled guest on Thursday evening.
Of course, it just so happened that the Redskins hired Jay Gruden on Thursday, and producers lined up a Gruden interview, and so Garcon got to be on a panel of men asking questions to his new coach. He only offered up one question.
“When do we have to show up?” Garcon asked.
“Shouldn’t you be running routes right now or lifting weights?” Gruden replied. “I mean, seriously. Get out of the studio and go run a route.”

Translation: STFU, and get to work...

On whether he’s spoken to RGIII’s father
“No, I have not. I have not. I’ve been dealing with the media but I’m looking forward to talking with Robert Griffin III, Robert Griffin the fourth, the second, the first. I don’t care, I’ll talk to all the Griffins.

rofls.

He gives some of the funniest interviews. That sense of humor will go a long way in how the local media treats the team.

Gruden really knows how to treat people. A lot of the hatred up there will dissipate.

I agree completely. On a side note, next time I'm up in Orlando, I have got to buy you a beer.....

I'd like that. But if you're in my town then I am the host. And I'm buying.

Or two, or three or five. Lol

Let me know the next time you're in the area. We'll have a blast.

after seeng some more interviews:

- Gruden is a creative offensive thinker who will adjust...he's not wedded to a scheme

- I saw media reports from Cincinnatti which were quite laudatory of Gruden. one side note, however, that should ring a bell for everyone - the media and players thought he abandoned the running game way too quickly in many games. again, what he does with the o-line will be one of the first tippers on where he is headed.

I have no doubt Gruden is going to get some pointers on organization from his brother.

No doubt the first bit of advice was to pick his own staff and only keep holdovers if he really felt comfortable with them.

Maybe i'm overthinking this, but Bruce Allen probably sold this whole deal to Snyder as a 2-fer. Jon Gruden is going to be a part of the organization.. Not necessarily on the payroll, but he'll be sighted at Redskins Park, i'm sure he'll talk to people, and he'll look at film with/for his brother. Jon is over the top sometimes, but he loves football, and he might try to be hush about it since he does the MNF games and doesn't want to seem bias, but he'll be around, i'm sure of it.
