2014 Coaching Search Rumors

If they hire Gruden, how many years do I have to wait for better than 8-8? I'm going to hold you to it ;-)

Ahhhhh, you are going to be thrilled. He is literally, the perfect candidate. So how long?

Gruden joined an abysmal Cincy franchise, with one of the most difficult owners in the league exactly 3 years ago.

Since his arrival, they've made the playoffs three years in a row--a franchise record. And not only has he overcome a bad owner, but he's done it with Andy Dalton as QB, and without a name RB.

He is literally every single thing that people here want.

Btw, when was the last time the Redskins went to the playoffs three years in a row?

Immediacy, consistency, perfect age, success with one of the worst owners, coaches players up, wins everywhere he goes, wins with lesser talent.

I'm personally the most excited I've been about this franchise in 20 years.

I believe you fellas can't separate PA from SOW...too bad.

I qualified my post with the preface that my statement was not indicative of the differences we've had in the past.

I'm as loyal a fan to the Skins as anyone. And, your argument that my feelings about Snyder are 'falling on deaf ears' is likely not so...
No one questioned your fandom or support of the team. We just wonder how you can be so pessimistic.

I'd suggest a poll. I'd like to see a poll by the Post or Comcast on what folks think of Snyder.
Poll is fine, but what do you want it to say?

"Dan Snyder is da debil!" - I would say you get a lot of support for that.

"Dan Snyder has been a terrible owner to date" I would say you'd get a lot of support for that...probably in the 95th%.

"Dan Snyder is learning from his mistakes." I would say you probably are about 50/50 with that one.

"Redskins are doomed forever as long as Dan Snyder is the owner." I bet you wouldn't get 20% support for that

"I accept Dan Snyder as owner because I know he is going nowhere as long as he is alive, but I hold hope he will one day get the winning formula in Washington." I would say many support that as well.

As long as the zombies continue to buy his gear, attend the games and not complain, this guy (who many attest to being an absolute jerk in person) will keep giving us an inferior product.

Yeah, Jack Kent Cooke had a reputation for being a difficult person when he owned the Lakers and his early tenure with the Redskins, but he appears to have matured into a likable guy. Winning will do that to a person. Can't say I completely disagree here, but I have hope that Dan Snyder has learned some tough lessons and is willing to let Allen pull the strings to build a team.

So, if my posts upset you so much, I'd just suggest you skip them and ignore me. And, if you really believe my thinking about Snyder is contrary to the majority of fans, go ahead and prove me wrong.

I never said your posts upset me. Please stop acting like a victim.

My point is/was that you are complaining an awful lot about something you cannot change. It just doesn't matter what you say or do, Dan Snyder is going nowhere. The sooner you accept that and hope that he is capable of change, the lower your blood pressure is likely to be.

But if you want to continue with your pessimism, nothing I can do to change that so I guess I will simply display the acceptance that you're a negative person and move on...like you should do with the current ownership.

Recovery is a different process for everybody :) It's a sunny day here in NC, hard to sustain ugly pessimism on a day like today.

Thanks again Boone for providing this refuge for those of us who didn't fit in at the other place. Despite the repeated disappointments during the Snyder era I am cautiously optimistic - this is one of the first time I can logically make a case that things can definitely improve in a sustained manner. We do have some good young players in place - I still believe in Griffin - and with a solid coaching staff, cap space, and a responsible approach to FA this program can be turned around in a hurry. I don't think it'll be as drastic as KC - we don't have several pro-bowl defenders on our current roster - but it can and should be sooner rather than later.

Getting the right coaches in place will be huge as will be getting FA right this year. I expect a lot of moves in FA, and I'm sure the media and fans will say "same old Redskins," but we've got pent up demand given the cap situation the last couple of years and clearly this defense needs to be overhauled. I think we can all agree that we had players thrust into starting roles this year that would probably never have seen the field if not for the cap situation. As some have said, maybe with Shanahan's track record on personnel moves the cap penalty was a blessing in disguise. When was the last time during the Snyder era that we were looking to bring in a new coach at a time when we had ample cap space, a potential franchise QB, and with someone in the FO who's reasonably responsible in managing contracts (Allen's had his moments but he's light years ahead of Cerrato and I do think he's changed the perception that the Redskins are the NFL's ATM machine.)

We won a division title with evil Dan Snyder as owner. I wish we had a different owner - we share that view. But your current position, that we are doomed to never have on the field success with Snyder as owner, wouldn't seem to be supported by the facts. I get the general sentiment, because I sometimes feel the same way. But coaches can win here. Gibbs did it. And at least for one year here, Shanahan did it. And so can a new coach we bring in.

NOTE TO MIKE: Did you notice the positivity in this post?! I'm working on it :)

2 Division titles :)

The Redskins have played in the post season three years (or more) in a row three times in franchise history.

1971, 1972, 1973, 1974

1982, 1983, 1984

1990, 1991, 1992

BTW, the series during the 1970s happened after going 25 years with out a post season appearance and only 4 winning records in 25 seasons.

Just a reminder that things could be worse than they seem now-they have been...much worse.

Munchak was fired by the Titans a short time ago. Seven teams - and five need new coaches.

Yes. 22 years ago. That's insane. It puts what Gruden is doing right this second into pretty good perspective.

And like our team 22 years ago, Gruden isn't doing it with Peyton Manning behind center.

He hardly gets credit for 2 coaching fails too, right?

Not saying you lump him in that..but in general when people talk about his failure at coach choosing.

I'd say he gets credit for Norv, because he inherited an NFC-East winning club, and ran it into the ground. Yes, Norv was a bad coach - we all know about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - but in 2000 he gave him very little to work with. I'm not sure what other coaching fails you wouldn't give him credit for, he was around for the rest of them.

Interesting...the Titans weren't that good this year, but I thought they showed signs of improvement. Guess not...lol

Yeah. I thought given Locker's injury they would cut Munchak some slack. They were looking pretty damned good before that injury, if memory serves.

Aren't you always clamoring for more positivity in these threads? Do you think a post like this hurts, or helps?

Pretty sure big Mike was being jocular....

This Bus:positive has more seats available but you better snag one quick. We're filling up.

OK, you're going over board again. You are suggesting that Jay Gruden is the reason they are where they are, discounting the resurgence of that defense.

We understand your desire for Jay Gruden, but don't try to sell us snake oil. As Boone has said, the strength of the Bengals over the past 3 years is not their offense, although they've been solid on that side of the ball...the Bengals strength is their defense. Their offense ranks in the middle of the pack, their defense ranks top 5 this year.

In fact, the more I looked into those Bengals offenses over the past 3 years, the more I am inclined not to want Jay Gruden here. With the talent on that offense, they should be much better than they are.

Here are the ranking according to this site (One of serv's favorites I think):
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamoff

2013 - 13th ranked offense Dalton ranked 16th
5th Ranked defense
2012 - 17th ranked offense Dalton ranked 20th
10th ranked defense
2011 - 17th Ranked offense Dalton ranked 16th
17th Ranked defense

Just to give you some perspective

2010 - 17th ranked offense

That is not the stuff a "savior" is made from. Their team is just that, a team. They have talent on both sides of the ball, but the offense is not some "savior" type offense. It has been solid...solid enough.

Hey, El, help! I signed into FB and clicked on the link to see what site you were talking about and FB's giving me a "Page not Found" error. Do you remember the name of the site?

I honestly have neither the time, nor desire to get into a stat argument for the next thirty pages. Especially because it seems you may be off your meds again:p But here are a few to consider:

2013 Offense: 7th in Points per game, 8th in Pass yards per game, 25th in Turnovers.

And that's with a goof for a QB, and an owner who doesn't spend for talent.

Obviously, stats aren't going to tell a complete picture one way or another. Putting up those stats above however, with a QB worse than Jason Campbell, speaks for itself.

And iif he can do that with Andy Dalton, I'd love to see what he could do here.

http://pickingpros.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals-stats.php

I also like the DC for Cincy, but not like Gruden for a few reasons.

serv, it was the wrong link I attached. I fixed the link. Football outsiders was my source.

I have no idea where the snake oil salesman got this stats. ;)

Dalton isn't great and has his share of flaws, but he's not worse than Jason Campbell. Come on, McD.

Gentlemen (and ladies),

My pessimism is fueled by over a decade of incompetence by owner. The only good decision he's made during his tenure was to hire Gibbs. But, it was Gibbs who volunteered to come back...it wasn't The Danny reaching out.

I'd like to be more optimistic, but I'm going to take the Missouri approach.

Show me.

You're not alone. And it tears me apart to have to defend this team...through the RG3 drama, all of Snyder's drama over the years, Shanny's exploits, Spurrier... It's tiring.

Let's hope the Redskins can turn things around so we can all smile again!

What can we do? We can only wait to see what happens this year with the coaching search and the draft/FA period. That is when we'll better understand what we're dealing with in 2014 and for the near future. The things to really look out for:

- Not only who the coach is... but the details of their contract. So we understand how long we'll be saddled with him.
- Not only the players we get in FA and the draft, but again, the details of their contracts.

The big reason to have at least a glimmer of hope is because the contracts situation for the Redskins, for the first time in probably 14 or 15 years, has a fair amount of balance. There are places that I'm not super happy about, but compare it to the Cowboys contract situation for 2014 overall.

There is a lot of work to be done on defense. Probably more than one year can fully fix, but we'll have to see what direction is taken. One thing that is very disconcerting is that RG3 needs to get a bit more mature. He just said and did so many foolish things both this year and last year too in my opinion. But he's young, he's very talented, and he has good work ethic. Given what they gave up for him, I'm pretty sure we aren't changing QBs for at least the next year or two. I do think that they need OL help pretty drastically... I wonder if you look at the teams that made big turnarounds, over the last few years, how many had at least one major change in OL through the draft? I know a couple of cases off the top of my head (including the Falcons from years ago and this year's Eagles) but not sure about others.

Anyway, I digress: it will be an interesting offseason. Many teams have to reboot / crash / reboot until they find the right formula. At least we are not in crash mode anymore - we are again in reboot. That's probably the best hope I can give for now, until the above big questions have answers.
