You can't really think Haslett was just standing there and the Shanahans were running the D for him? There may have been selected situations where Shanahan overruled Haslett, I think that's possible (as has been rumored), but to give Haslett a pass because he supposedly 'wasn't really the DC', I think is sort of dubious. If Haslett really was being constantly interfered with, he'd have left long ago - as no coach is going to put up with that. Haslett has to own, in large part (if not all) the success or failure of the defense. It was his job to improve the defense and he didn't accomplish that. Now - there may be mitigating factors in his lack of success, such as not getting adequate talent, being pressed to use a scheme that wasn't ideal, those kinds of things. But we need to stop trying to blame Shanahan for everything. He had grown-up experienced (mostly) coaches all around him, each with their responsibilities and they are accountable for their unit's performance. I think Haslett still being here says more about Snyder wanting all of the pure Shanahan guys OUT to make a statement, than it does about the likelihood of Haslett being our future defensive coordinator. Just my opinion.
