So, assuming we do get Shanny, do you think this would help Clinton's chances of remaining with the team ?

Is this a naive question question ? Shanahan traded him away while putting up huge numbers, and he's nowhere the player he was back then. That right there might scream to some people Portis is done here for sure.

I think Portis is done here no matter what.

If 2010 is an uncapped year then I think Portis is gone no matter what. Mike loved Portis as a player but it's easy to get in his doghouse when you start grumbling about your contract. Shanahan nipped a potential holdout in the bud by dealing Clinton to the Skins for Roland Bailey.

If 2010 turns out NOT to be an uncapped year, and Shanahan becomes HC, then I think Mike and Portis can co-exist just fine, providing that's what Shanahan wants.

I think any big name coach (and Shanahan qualifies) is going to come in here sending an early message that the culture is changing. Portis is as big a symbol of what needs to change as there is. That coupled with him being non-productive this year, and on the downside of his career leads me to agree with Henry. He's gone.

Allen will love 2010 b/c he can clear the Skins of cap, while using money to bring in the players needed to upgrade the team.

$$ wise 2010 would be the year to either a) cut Portis or b) significantly alter his current contract (ie tear it up and write a new one for 2011) based on performance etc.

I think the Skins probably cut him outright on June 1st for the following reasons:

1. age- CP is only 28 but with his career and # of snaps, he's about 50 in football years. I could be wrong and CP may still have it for another 3-4 seasons, but I'm thinking he's now where Edgerin James was in his last 2-3 years with the Cardinals. So more or less CP will be productive and have a few games of flashes (like his 78 yard run vs. KC) but mostly look for a 3-4 ypc.

2. attitude- he was a headache for Zorn. Maybe he was right, maybe not. But I have to think the next coach won't want to put up with it. Gibbs got rid of Arrington IMO for similar reasons (being a distraction).

3. $$- big contract/probably not worth it anymore. Many owners will love the uncapped year if only to trim the fat on their future caps (no way will the NFL or the union remain uncapped IMO, their current system is one of the better ones in major sports). Yes, CP is guaranteed a large portion of his salary but that's nothing for Snyder. If this was the Bengals, I'd say he'd be here in 2010 b/c of the guaranteed money.

i remember one summer, portis twinged his hammy on the first day of training camp. when they interviewed shanny to get his thoughts on the opening of camp, he was already in mid-season form going on and on about how he couldn't believe he had some players who had the nerve to show up at camp out of shape. he specifically said pulling a hamstring on the first day is an indication that you are not in football shape. then he cut the interview short. unless shanny has gotten old and tired, that's the tone he will set at redskin park.

IF Portis comes back,I hope whoever the new coach is makes him do the Oklahoma drill

Has anyone thought about how many starters are out, but the team still is in the game? Look at the games for the Saints, Cowboys and Eagles. Do we have starters who perhaps are not as good as we thought? I think that Portis will be out. I hope they keep Cooley and not use him in a trade to get other players. Besides, everytime we trade a good play, it always comes back to bite us. I would like to see Cooley and Davis together.

I think Cooley is safe, but agree with all that Portis is done in DC.

Portis is gone.. the uncapped year all but guarantees it.
I wouldn't rest thinking Cooley was safe either. Davis' play has made him a very attractive bit of trade bait.
I'd bet we could get a second for him, and if we can. I'd have really think about pulling the trigger.

I agree. Lets get rid of the guys we know won't consistently produce. And remember, it's not just about blowing it up to produce maximum draft picks - we've got to have some of our vets to show them the ropes as well. There are things coaches can't coach, but that they can learn from vets.

so no one would trade cooley, but would you trade davis for a second rounder?

love the prospect of a tandem TE set, but is there anyone else on the roster that could be used as tbait?

This.

The only way I see us keeping him is if for some odd reason we draft a RB and they want Portis to play the mentor style role. Something like what the Nationals are doing with Ivan Rodriguez.

Just a second? Nope. It would have to be a first or a combination of picks at this point and then it would still depend. Right now, I am looking at two TE sets as potentially better for this team than 3 WR/1 TE sets. Much more difficult to defend as far as pass defense is concerned and still good to run out of.

Andre Carter. He is nearing the end and while he is playing well this year how many more does he have? One? Two? Follow the NE model and trade him for a something like they did with Seymour before he isn't worth anything.

Santana Moss. Imagine him in New Orleans and how he would help that offense

I would be keeping him to play in the slot next year like NE does with Welker. Use Thomas, Kelly and Mitchell on the outside. Combine that with our possible 2 TE sets... Man, those are some serious match up issues for a defense.

ismail, santana is another one i would hate to see go. will we ever forget those TDs in Dallas when all hope was lost? but yeah, i would grudgingly move him given the opportunity.

mike, if you can get a decent draft pick for landry, yep i'd pull the trigger with the intention of drafting an o-lineman. i'm just not convinced he's valuable to anyone else right now.

so, neophyte, you wouldn't make any changes on offense, and one change on D (carter). why get rid of cerrato, or even zorn? just stay the course with snyderato.

imo, when you're 4-9 (4! AND 9! DAMNIT!), no one deserves to be immune from being cut or traded. no one.

(apologies for veering us off topic, maybe all this warrants its own thread)

You won't get a second for Davis. I'd consider trading Cooley for a second.

Davis has played well enough that we know we will get some production from that position even without Cooley. Cooley is a good player. I love the guy. But a game-changer he is not. Not in the mold of Shannon Sharpe.

Moss is too old. Only the Redskins give up significant picks for players in their 30s. :)

Noone's going to give up anything for a 31 year-old WR who's good for about 60 catches and 900 yards a season.

It isn't so much that I would not make a changes but more like who I would trade of the players I deem tradable.

And I think you are wrong about no one being immune. I have a few sacred cows that I would not touch as you need something to build around. Cooley, Davis, Orakpo, Haynesworth, and Jarmon are on that list. The problem is they are also, in all likelihood, the only players another team would want.

I would trade Rogers but he is a RFA and I'm not sure how that would work so I left him off the list. I am on the fence about the Landry as him being effect depends on getting a legit FS. I am not sure we could get enough for Horton to make it worth the deal.

Campbell I am leaning toward keeping. The kid has really turned it up in the last few weeks and I think he could be even better in a WCO like Shanahan's.

Who else is there?

That doesn't mean I wouldn't make changes or that I wanted Cerrato involved in the changes we already know have to be made. We know the offensive line needs a lot of work. We know that we need a SAM and a FS. And we know we need to say goodbye to a number of vets who will need to go after this year.

(apologies for veering us off topic, maybe all this warrants its own thread)

No worries, sir. Threads are living, breathing things that often follow their own path in this world.
