cause for worry?

so....we're gonna be a bit short at the DE spot for the first four games with Carriker out and Jenkins suspended. that likely means Gholston plays a lot. the guy is a stellar team player and works with an unyielding motor. but, having watched him over the years, I just have memories of him getting blown out at the los way too often and not really mounting a consistent pass rush. we're hurting more at DE now than one might think IMO.

any word on how Merling is doing? nothing in the press so far.

Haven't heard much about Merling, but I've read Baker is taking a lot of reps also. Golston is nothing special, and you're right, I recall him getting blown up a lot as well. Hopefully everyone else stays healthy and a steady rotation of Baker, Merling, Golston & maybe even Nield if his knee is healed keeps them fresh and they get blown out less. I remember reading that in passing situations they may even put Kerrigan in at DE, with Rak & (Brandon) Jenkins at the OLB spots. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them sign some depth at the position after the first round of camp cuts.

If past-performance is any indication, I wouldn't expect much out of Merling. Hopefully he'll be good enough to hold down the line for 4 games until Jenkins returns. Worse comes to worst, I'd just go with Cofield & Bowen at the ends, and rotate Baker & Brace at the NT spot.

Our hope for a solid D early is that Rak and Kerrigan just flat out dominate. With the DLine hurting the way it is, that is going to take more of superhuman effort than usual. The rookies in the Secondary are going to take time to acclimate, which means our LBers will have to carry us early. Hopefully once our Secondary gels and gets more comfortable, the entire D will be ready and able to step it up and play well.

By the end of the year, I think we will have a very, VERY good D, but the first part of the season may be a bit rough.

Hopefully Meriweather is good to go from week 1.

I think Baker will end up taking most of the early down reps those first four games with a quicker end (Orakpo) on third down passing situations.

The Skins signed Baker to a 1.5M deal which is good money for a street free agent who was a rotation guy last year.

The team evidently sees upside potential in Baker who from what Keim says is a very good athlete on a 325 frame.

I agree on Merling. Have not heard his name mentioned once during offseason work or camp.

Doesn't seem like a guy that sticks.

Too bad about Worthington. Haslett said earlier that Doug had really started to come on at end.

i'm worried. our d needs every bit of help it can get, and two assumed starters going out is certainly not of any help.

What, me worry?

We'll be fine. Cedric is a steady, if unspectacular player. He knows the system, and is usually where he's supposed to be.

Besides, I got a feeling our LBs are gonna wreak havoc. Bowen and Cofield will draw 3 linemen damn near every play. That only leaves 2, and maybe a tight end, to handle Cedric, and 1-3 LBs, coming from God knows where.

This is gonna be a special year boys and girls.

It is not a year, to fear. But to be feared.

We did not re-sign Cedric, but Kedric did get a new contract. :D

Is this the Cedric you're talking about?

I just find this kind of interesting that you would move a guy like Baker to DE and leave Cofield at NT. Why not move Cofield to DE with Baker at NT in some of those situations? Isn't Cofield a bit quicker?

Its a better fit for Cofield also...I guess they don't trust any of the other guys as a full-time NT maybe.
