Stock Market Ttrading Thread 2013....Let's Rock!

Extreme, if you aren't an employee, there is nothing you can do on that.

The decision to buy Facebook when I did is paying off really well. The question is when do I get out? I don't have an answer to that...

What site would you guys recommend going to for a noob? All I see is commercials for scottrade, tdameritrade, etc. but I don't know if those are good or if I should avoid them like the plague.

History tells us Facebook will eventually die a slow death, and make way for the next social network craze. I guess you just have to decide if its on the way up or down.

Edit: after posting, I realized that was a bit captain obvious.

Well, the only history we have is MySpace and it's different for many reasons.

Whether or not Facebook becomes a wise investment is going to rest solely on if they can advertise in a way that is profitable. They've been doing significantly better since Microsoft teamed up with them.

Google might still beat them out. I used to think Facebook had the disadvantage of not having a solid ad engine. I'm starting to realize google has the disadvantage of bot having the bigger user base.

Of the two googles plan is much more transparent and appears extremely desperate. Plus their stock is super expensive.

I use options house because it's a low flat fee for trades and am enjoying it. They have a great mobile app too. The other guys here probably have my much more experience though. I don't trade much, just monitor my investments.

Short-term, indicators show FB should come down a little here. On a scale of 1-100, with 100 being extremely overbought, it's a 94.

After a few days however, that number will drop, and FB can continue higher. I'd hold it, and add on the day that it breaks yesterday's high of the day.

You must be too young to remember Friendster, and AOL/AIM before that.

I think ironically that its ads that will take them down - I'm reminded of "The Social Network" quote about messing up a good thing with ads. They are terrible now.

Extreme, if you aren't an employee, there is nothing you can do on that.

My understanding was that with privately traded companies you can buy the stock, you just have to get someone there to sell it to you. Depending on the company there may be approval processes in place (any legit company would have them, it's to prevent hostile takeovers) that you would have to pass, and for many it wouldn't even be possible because the people with the stock wouldn't approve the sale.

But I basically hear the people that run my company say things like that and miss the other part of the conversation, and forget half of what I heard so I may be way off the mark on that.

Oh come on I'm not that young ;)

They were different for many reasons, just like myspace. AOL is actually still quite a successful company, mind you ;) They were entrenched in ISP, email, chat, and other social items, and news. They've largely moved towards trying to be a news hub (think yahoo) and are using their ridiculous earnings on dial up access service to fund it for the time being; I have no idea if they'll be successful or not.

Friendster didn't have the reach nor the functionality facebook has.

Look - I hate facebook as a product, this isn't an opinion I've arrived at lightly or easily. I don't have a facebook account and there is a reason for that. I used to think it was just a matter of time, but they've cornered the market in what they offer. Their attractiveness now is that everyone is on it; until there becomes something that is a bigger draw than that, they're going to remain king. You'd have to convince a large mass of people to move before the rest follow, and they'd all have to go to the same place otherwise you can throw out the fundamental attractiveness; which means you're going to have to get a lot of people to agree to not only leave facebook, but to move to the same product. Google tried and failed miserably; miserably. So miserably did they fail, and so strong is their demented desire to beat facebook, they're completely restructuring their company around Google Plus... (their secrete research labs may be the only part that doesn't do that, we're not sure, because its secrete)

I used to think Google would get a handle on having a bigger user base and then rake in all the money with their far superior ad engine.

I'm convinced at this point people are never going to leave facebook. People are just entirely too lazy, and at the end of the day don't care about morals/principles/privacy/etc as long as they're getting entertainment in their little world. With Microsoft helping them, facebook is going to do some marvelous things with that user base.

Facebook's ads suck. Yet people are ditching Google's system and flocking to Facebook's. I originally thought it was about the technology; I was wrong, it's about the number of people you have data on, and Facebook whoops Google's ass in that department right now.

I think ironically that its ads that will take them down - I'm reminded of "The Social Network" quote about messing up a good thing with ads. They are terrible now.
Ads is where the money is, as explained above. The only way ads takes down facebook is if it drives people away. Certainly possible, but again, people are entirely too lazy to stick up for principles these days.

one thing's for certain, facebook is a risky investment. pegging a reasonable value on their stock is really hard right now, their business model is evolving and their profits are not really predictable. there's no way to tell if this is the start of something good for their stock, or another slight bump that's bound to crash quickly (like it has been since going public.) I certainly wouldn't recommend it (not that anyone should take my advice anyways), I'm only invested in it with throw-away money I thought I'd gamble with.

T, there is something called a "second market". It allowed people like myself to buy and sell shares of Facebook a year before it became public. And I did so with good success.

www.secondmarket.com

It really only provides access to major companies like Twitter, etc. It's not going to be of any help in Extreme's case, and like you mentioned, there are a lot of hoops to jump through. Like large mimimun account sizes.

There are some other ways too....symbol GSVC allowed regular investors the chance at FB a year before it went public. But it's not going to help Extreme.

Right...but both were "The" social media software of their time, and both faded into the sunset. As did myspace. Its a general trend, I'm not comparing functionality or anything like that, just social media to social media. None of that matters, really - functionality improves with everything, right? So soon enough some socnet will come around and replace Facebook because it has cooler functionality.

People are already leaving Facebook for Twitter, Instagram, etc. Facebook has just been smart enough to incorporate those things into Facebook, so it seems like they never left.

Well no ****, Sherlock. :p But the ads suck, as does paying $1 to send someone an email (a move that wreaks of desperation, btw). Hold Facebook as long as you want, but don't say I didn't tell you so when it dies for the next, great thing. :)

Sweet, I appreciate the analysis.

There's no way in hell I'm putting any more money in it though. I took my gambling money and went with facebook and blackberry and I'm not even yet because blackberry screwed me in the short term.

I'm not the best gambler but I know when to stop buying back in for a while :)

People might be saying they're leaving, but the numbers don't support that.

You introduced me to this site, so I'm probably showing you something you already read, but:
Facebook's Earnings Results Deliver the Likes (FB)
active user base is up 21%

mobile user base is through the roof, which is where majority of the focus is and (surprisingly, to be honest) also were the growth is.

:) I didn't mean it like that.

Without hijacking the whole thread and spilling into more diatribes (a bad habit of mine ;) ) I'll leave it at this:
You, me, and everyone else on the planet things facebook's ads suck.
Yet people are fleeing google's service to use facebook's. (Why do you think Google is infatuated with Facebook?)
There is a reason for that - that reason is very important.
Microsoft is helping facebook redesign their ad service because Microsoft realized Google's gone insane and decided to shift their company to one focused (almost solely) on defeating facebook. Microsoft is using this as a proxy war, to defeat Google. Ever since Microsoft joined up things have started going really well for facebook in the ad market. High up execs in Google that made Google, well, Google, are fleeing the company (being picked off by facebook, microsoft, yahoo, etc) because they recognize the shift.

So you can hate them, I can hate them, shirly from the 4th floor can hate them, but businesses are buying into the service more and more and the numbers are going up. What's it going to look like when the ad engine finally doesn't suck? We'll see...

Facebook has proven that they get it. If they can make $4 per share a year, a simple p/e of 10 puts it at $40 per share. You should be good.

On BBRY, I always remember something I was taught 15 years ago--almost all Canadian stocks eventually go to 0. The exchange rules up there aren't as stringent as those in the US. Now over the past few years, they have done well due to mining stocks. But that party has gotten ugly.

They do have some great banks at the moment, but I wouldn't venture past that as a general rule.

T....here's a visual view of BBRY. You can clearly see the support and resistance channel it had been trading in. I'm not sure how to post a pic of the charts I watch, but this will give you a basic view:

Stock Quote BBRY

And here is one of FB. Again, you can see the downtrend channel it had been trading it for months. It's clearly broken out of that.

I'd get out before it goes down.

We are talking stocks and not dates, right?

I'm so angry about blackberry.
I've lost so much it's not even worth trying to cut my losses. I'm stuck with it until they go bankrupt or come back. Thank god I didn't spend much on it.

I don't understand those graphs. I mean I get that the purple line is showing the upper-bound on the channel and the blue line is showing the lower, but that's about the extent of my understanding.
