REDSKINS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent wide receivers Donté Stallworth and Devery Henderson and free agent kicker John Potter. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. In addition, the team waived tight end Deangelo Peterson and defensive end Doug Worthington with injured designations.

Stallworth (6-0 200) was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round (13th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 115 career games with 59 starts, amassing 321 receptions for 4,837 receiving yards (15.1 avg.) with 35 receiving touchdowns. Now entering his 11th NFL season, Stallworth has spent time as a member of the Saints (2002-05), Philadelphia Eagles (2006), Cleveland Browns (2008) and Baltimore Ravens (2010), and has spent two separate stints with both the Redskins (2011, 2013) and the New England Patriots (2007, 2012).

Stallworth was a member of the Redskins during the 2011 season, playing in 11 games and catching 22 passes for 309 yards with two receiving touchdowns. Last season, he joined the Patriots as a free agent, appearing in one game and registering one reception, a 63-yard touchdown against the Houston Texans in Week 14.

Stallworth played collegiately at Tennessee from 1998-2001, compiling 99 receptions for 1,747 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. As a junior in 2001, he earned second-team All-SEC honors after posting 41 receptions for 821 yards (20.0 avg.) and 10 touchdowns. Stallworth, 32, was born on Nov. 10, 1980. He played wide receiver and cornerback Grant H.S. in Sacramento, Calif., where he was voted California Player of the Year and named as an All-State defensive back and USA Today honorable mention All-American as a senior.

Henderson (5-11, 200) was originally drafted by the Saints in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft (50th overall). He spent his first nine NFL seasons with the team, playing 124 games with 76 starts and compiling 245 receptions for 4,377 receiving yards and 20 receiving touchdowns. Last season, Henderson appeared in 15 games with nine starts for the Saints, catching 22 passes for 316 yards with one touchdown.
Henderson played collegiately at LSU from 2000-03, appearing in 42 career games as both a wide receiver and a running back. For his career, he caught 77 passes for 1,310 receiving yards (17.0 avg.) and 19 receiving touchdowns in addition to adding 433 rushing yards on 83 carries with three rushing touchdowns.

Henderson, 31, was born on March 26, 1982. He attended Opelousas (La.) H.S., where he rushed for 1,322 yards and 20 touchdowns as senior and was a two-time 100- and 200-meter champion in track.
Potter (6-1, 219) was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft (251st overall). He spent the first six weeks of the 2012 season as the Bills’ kickoff specialist, kicking off 24 times with 13 touchbacks and an average distance of 66.8 yards.
Potter, 23, played collegiately at Western Michigan, where he converted 47-of-65 field goal attempts and 184-of-188 PATs to become the school’s all-time leader for career points by a kicker. He was born on Jan. 24, 1990, and attended Grand Haven (Mich.) H.S., where he was a 2007 All-State selection by the Detroit News.

Stallworth? Devery Henderson? Can you say one-trick ponies? GO Deep! Doesn't look good for Robinson, has he fallen that out of favor?

Side note... GD we're getting old I can remember having huge hopes for Henderson coming into the NFL I even picked him up in FF his rookie year. Who the hell can believe that was 9 years ago!!??

Yeah, I have to say the 9-year stat shocked me a bit too, lol. I was thinking this was his 4th, maybe 5th year. 9 years? That's almost a decade! Christ...

Fear, I cannot tell you this is why, but if you happened to attend any of the Training Camp practices he was a member of the team 2 years ago, you would notice how hard he works.

I cannot speak to the young'ins we have on the roster and how possibly displeased the coaches are with them, but Stallworth works hard. He is a little long in the tooth, and I would be surprised to see him on the final roster, but at least in camp you have a hard working vet on the roster.

Here is my theory...

We need the law firm of Garcon, Morgan, and Moss to be as healthy as possible for the September opener. They will probably be kept on a very short leash in the preseason. The QBs can still toss the ball to experienced WRs in July and August and not some group of nobodies from Chadron St., Grand Valley U., and Walnut Tech.

If Stallworth and/or Henderson have an out of this world preseason, then keep one or both of them around.

Agreed BB. We also have some question marks on the roster like Brisco, and Hank, who should be tearing it up by now, even with his lost time to injury.

let the whiley old vets push the young guys, and let the chips fall where they may.

So Stallworth has the work ethic but not the talent, and our young guys like Hank have the talent, but not the work ethic (which seems to be the case for every single receiver we've drafted since Art Monk....UGH)
Hopefully Stallworth's work ethic is contagious and rubs off on the young guys. I guess that's part of the plan and hope.

A kicker is interesting. I wonder what that's about.

Just a favor for a family friend or something?

One thing that occurred to me is the fact that Stallworth didn't have Mr. Griffin III throwing the ball his direction in 2011.

This could be an interesting training camp.

I'm not asking with any kind of an edge or attitude, but what evidence is there (even the slightest evidence) that Hankerson doesn't work hard? He hasn't been consistent. That doesn't necessarily mean he's not putting in the effort and work. We forget that WRs typically develop more slowly than nearly any other position. I'm guessing we will start to see him turn the corner this year.

I was gonna respond with this also, but I forgot. I remember reading about Hankerson doing extra work with Cousins last year to work on his routes & help Cousins learn the offense.

I'm sorry, you're probably right. It was probably more of an assumption than something backed by evidence.

Could be true for all I know...I just don't know that his struggles are due to a lack of effort. Most WRs struggle early. And we're tainted by them struggling late too. He may prove to be different from many of his predecessors...

Gotta admit the Stallworth signing had me scratching my head a bit. Not that I'm questioning the new regime's signing judgement, I'm just curious what their exact thoughts were. Whatever the case, preseason can't come soon enough for me.

I agree, there have been so many receivers with promise coming through here that never panned out that it is hard not to already lump him in with the rest. I really hope he does take that next step this year. If any extra personal motivation is needed, just knowing the man who's throwing them the ball and the men drawing up and calling the plays should provide it.

As far as work ethic, I don't recall hearing anything negative about him either.

On the field though, I do remember a key play where he short armed the ball in anticipation of getting hit. He's got to grow out of that quickly. And of course so many bobbled balls that it made him look at times like he was out there just learning how to catch. I'm hoping that disappears quickly as well.

I have feeling that Stallworth was brought in more for a teaching role than to actually be on the active roster come game day. May even be camp fodder.

That is the thing that stood out to me the most, which probably fueled my original statement to a large degree.
It seemed like the majority of the time, he was either dropping the ball, or even if he caught it, it was like this huge struggle just to get a handle on the ball, like it was some foreign object, and he was surprised to see such an unfamiliar, "threatening" specimen in his hands.

Henderson and Stallworth are better fifth receiver candidates than Robinson and Lance Lewis.

I think that is the story. The coaches were underwhelmed with what they saw in re depth and made these moves.
