OS is Windows XP 2002, and burning with Windows Media Player

Just a thought, but is it possible that Defragmenting could do this ?
I noticed while watching the Defragment process, that it's indicating that it's "moving files" that I recognize. So, I'm wondering, if it moves files around, maybe it changes the settings in the process ? Just a stab in the dark, on my part I suppose.

I've ripped all my CDs in to mp3 format, even though my vehicle does not have any provision to plug in an aux input. All my ripping was done with WMP.

I then use the audio coder within Mediacoder http://www.mediacoderhq.com/dlfull.htm to 'adjust' all the tracks so that the volume is all the same.

Once all that is done, I then load them all on to Winamp, which, with the click of a single button, names them and downloads any and all info of the track. It can even find the cover art. Once that is all done, it is a matter of transferring what you want to your mp3 player.

So as to play mp3's in my car, I use a transmitter that relays the signal through the stereo. I plug the mp3 player in to the transmitter, put the tune the stereo in to a non-used frequency, tune the transmitter in to the same frequency, then enjoy the tunes.

Works for me, but there is some work involved to get to that stage.

No, defragmentation just moves their physical location on the disk. It's probably a bug in the os that overwrites your settings. As much love as XP gets it's actually quite buggy.

For every negative thing/story I can say about Dell there's someone out there that feels the same way about HP, or Sony, or both :) You also have to remember that I do a lot of work with servers and on a level much different than home users, and Dell is also in that area. And, to be honest, Dell servers and server related products just suck; servers, enclosures, et al. It's probably unfair for me to transfer that over to home user computers, since it's completely different product lines with completely different people running them and goals for them, but it's what winds up happening.

I like HP because I think they build quality products for a reasonable price that last, and I think they have a great support system. But it's a completely biased/subjective thing.

I would recommend Sony if you were looking for a travel laptop because they make a really nice 13/14" model and 13/14" is perfect for using the tray tables on an airplane, any bigger and it just doesn't really fit right.

Sorry for taking so long to respond.

I have a business contract with Dell that runs out at the end of 2017 - I get a bit of a discount for any computer even though I sold my company several years ago.

I'd only want a desktop and Dell has done good by me. But if there is a better DT, I'll spend the money. I don't need one anytime soon - got an i7 quad core monster now, but getting a couple of computers in the next few years is a certainty.
 
Well, hope dell goes back to being a private company. They'll be even better for you then. I know I referenced their home computers a lot, but their business computers aren't bad either. Most of my gripe with Dell is with their server line. Their laptops had a serious overheating issue back a few years ago but as far as I can tell they've fixed that.
 
What are the boards opinions on those Google Glass thingies?

For me, I'm admittedly torn.

The tech nerd and innovative side of me thinks holy large doses of personal use awesomeness

The civil libertarian/citizen who holds his privacy dear side of me screams NO! Dont point that **** at me or my family ever!
 
I think they're awesome and definitely the way technology is headed - meaning one day we're going to interact with information in a much cleaner way than pulling a smart phone out of a pocket and tapping with our fingers.

Unfortunately the more we move in that direction the more our personal information gets collected.

Still haven't decided how I feel about the long haul idea of having your personal information so available, but it's going to be hard to buck that trend in the next 30 years. For now I opt-out of data collection, for many reason.

Go for it, but realize that Google and privacy don't go well together.

Can't wait until they add a jack into your smartphone so you can view your mail and browse.

I'd also like to have one for a traffic stop.
 
You Mike, that brings up a good point. I have no idea where the truth is, but my eye doctor said that computer screens aren't bad for your eyes. What makes your eyes go bad is constantly reading text - before computers it was newspapers and books that were 'causing' peoples eyes to go bad. In reality it's just the repetitive reading at of text at the same distance.

So I'd be curious how that works on the eyes too, because even if you believe the screen/lights aren't doing it your eyes are still processing that information. With glasses it would probably be something your eyes went through the entire day instead of just at work or whatever.

Aint that the truth.....it totally pisses me off how Google/Youtube keep insisting that I give them my cell phone number to add to my account, all in the name of "my security" in case I get locked out. I'm like, "You're kiddin me ?" Any fool knows that "my security" is much better off by me NOT giving my phone #, than it is, if I do put it on my account. And Google/Youtube aren't the only ones trying to do this - so is Facebook, Yahoo, Hotmail, and probably others. Besides begging for my phone #, Google/Youtube is also harassing me for my "real name" every time I log in. And again I'm like, "I don't think so"
 
For starters, the fact that they don't have a true legitimate reason for having it, makes it highly suspicious that they are even asking for it. There are numerous other ways to have "backup login" procedures in place, if you forget your password, besides giving out extremely personal information. Secondly, I'm fairly certain you will see a rise in those "spam & scam texts" as well as telemarketing phone calls, if you give this information out. And just the overall trend towards online security/identity threats, makes me extremely reluctant to give this out to an organization that does not need it. The less personal information stored on the web about me, the better.
There's a saying that's been around for a while - "Google is your friend".....however, when it comes to our personal information, Google is certainly NOT our friend.
 
Just to clear this up:

Google asks for your phone number to set up 2 factor authentication on your account. If your account ever becomes disputed there remains an easy way for them to return control of the account to the correct user - just send an authorization code via SMS to the phone on record.

I have had to use that before and it worked well. If you have a google account you care about (or if you use it with an android phone) I would suggest you set it up as well.

It was in response to gmail becoming one of, if not the, most attacked target on the web. They're not only attacked by little script kiddies hanging out in the coffee shop, they're attacked by China, probably the US, Russia, and other countries trying to obtain information about anti-government people/groups/protesters that are using the service.

Google's 2 factor authentication is praised pretty highly by many in the field because they're pretty much the only company that offers 2 factor authentication for free for a service they also provide for free. Most places you have to pay for that or it simply isn't even an option.

They don't use it for marketing. If they wanted to use it for marketing odds are Google could get your number without asking you for it ;)

I like to think an angel slaps Sergey Brin in the face every time I click No to that.
 
I don't like Google+. I gave it its fair shot, it just bored me. Everything about it. I find it amusing that Google likes to brag that it's number 2 behind Facebook with active users. Yeah, it would be a stat to brag about if it wasn't for the fact that Google merged its services, so every time you log on to gmail, googledocs, youtube, etc. you are counted as an active Google+ user. The stat is severely overinflated.

I use every service Google has except for Google+ and gmail, but every time I use one, they high five themselves. I don't know if they keep stats on average time spent on each, but I'd be willing to bet a graph would have facebook usage towering over Google+.

None of this Google+ stuff would bother me at all, except for the fact that a lot of people that do use Google+ have become as vocal and annoying about it as Apple fanboys.

I was under the impression that every phone number in the US was 555-1212. The area code is dependent on where you are ringing from.
