STATEMENT FROM JAMES R. ANDREWS, M.D., ANDREWS INSTITUTE
REGARDING PROCEDURE PERFORMED ON ROBERT GRIFFIN III

"Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery early this morning. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction. We expect a full recovery and it is everybody's hope and belief that due to Robert's high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.

The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career."

Am I correct in implying then that it's Robert's youth, athleticism, attitude, mentality, work ethic, and approach to the game that could be the factors that realistically allow him to play in 2013 as Andrews suggests, but otherwise, had this been a different athlete, we'd be looking a much longer recovery time based on the procedures that were done to his knee?

It all still sounds pretty serious to me based on reading this and that Robert's determination will be the deciding factor in determining how quickly he returns.

I'm preparing for a healthy dose of Cousins for first half of the season, if not longer.

Re-do of the ACL... ?

I know that may sound weird, but I'm curious exactly why and what a "re-do" is/means/bla, bla, bla.

Nick

Twitter is abuzz with doctors and experts who say the Skins stated recovery time is way too short, FWIW. Everyone is making a point to say Peterson is the exception, not the rule, which is absolutely correct.

The way I heard it described was that the last acl recon he had was just OK, but it wouldnt have longevity needed to play NFL level ball so they redid the whole shebang again. He didnt have a ton of acl dmage and for you and I it would be fine. It just isnt strong enough for an athlete.

WE heard it straight from Andrews' mouth though, so we gotta put more weight in that dont we?

I'm thinking the degree of injury caused Andrews to say, "...he expects a full recovery because of Griffin’s “high motivation.”

Perhaps the injuries were not as severe as everyone was led to think?

I read somewhere that RG has a rubber band and screw in his knee as a result of the first ACL. Maybe things just needed tightening up...:biggrin2:

In any case, I, too, am looking forward to his long and exceptional career.

HTTR!

There are tweets that kind of agree too!

@mikemp71 From what I was told it was only a matter of time before the repair from 2009 gave.

LL ‏@HTTR24_7
@mikemp71 was explained to me as.. fixing a radiator hose with the belt off you r pants. 09 was a quick fixed aimed at a fast recovery.

LL ‏@HTTR24_7
@mikemp71 The way he runs/plays was a matter of time. This fix is stronger..

Wow... I wonder why the last one was so slapdash... ?

Nick

Seems to me hoping/expecting he'll be ready for the season opener is a little optimisitic....even for the Billy Mumphrey types among us. Way I see it today, after brooding dark thoughts since Sunday about possibly having lost the man for good, if he's ready to play an NFL game at any point in 2013 that's a win.

Just very hard to envision him being physically ready to start an NFL game by September....it's not jsut about playing that day, it's about having prepared via the physical and mental meatgrinder of training camp and the preseason. I know he's a special kid, but there are limits even for RG3.

My gut says Cousins starts the year, and depending on Bob's condition and how the team is doing, we might be talking about him starting at some point during the season...maybe midseason.

The good news is that he isn't going to take this well....he's going to work his ass off physically and mentally so when he DOES get back on the field he can re-take the world by storm.

All in all, knowledge that we're apparently getting him back at full strength at ALL is something I can live with.

More info - they used a patellar tendon graft from his healthy knee to "repair" the old ACL fix, so he's going to be rehabbing both knees. The graft from the healthy knee is no big deal though from what I've read, and that one should be good to go from the beginning.

I'm shocked that he had such janky surgery the first time...I wonder how that is? He injured it fairly early in 2009, not like he wasn't going to have ample time to return for 2010 with a real surgery. Kind of mind-bottling.

All things considered, I think the way his surgery went was the best case scenario. I'm not convinced he didn't tear at least the ACL on the first injury (right before the 2nd TD), so I think either way he'd be rehabbing.

We probably should, yes. I think what some are conjecturing (key word there) is that Dr. Andrews is employed by the team, and may have been asked to paint a rosier picture on things than reality might otherwise dictate.

Until proven otherwise, I trust what the doc says though.

I agree. If it were anyone other than Andrews, I might question it more, but that guy is a god in this topic and I doubt he would do anything to damage that rep.

I'll be thrilled if he plays at all in 2013, and kinda scared if he plays before Thanksgiving. They have to take their time and rehab this right.

Wouldn't the recovery from this type of procedure always be affected by the patients motivation and commitment? That part of Andrew's statement seems pretty easy to understand, to me.

As with all things of this nature- hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Everybody is different. Youth and physical fitness play a big part, but attitude is just as big a part.

Prime example was my last shoulder reconstruction. Two other people had the exact procedure that day, though mine too about 2 hours longer.

Six weeks later we all showed up for the first PT session. The women in her mid 20's could barely move more then her hand. The teen age boy could move his arm slightly away from his body. I could lift my arm to shoulder height. They assigned a PT that was a trainer for the bills for 7 or 8 seasons because he was the toughest. I was done, and back on the job 6 weeks before the boy, and lost track of the women. I was 30 at the time, and lived no where as clean a life as Robert.

Yes, Peterson was "an" exception, but not the only possible exception. I had an advantage, having rehabbed the shoulder before. Knowing when and how to push the training. Robert also has an advantage, in that he's rehabbed the knee before. I have full faith at this point that he will not see the field till he's ready physically, by Andrews standards. Nothing is going to slow him down, it's not in him to sit back and relax. He has an agenda, and surely a time table for his life plans.

We're so lucky we have a player such as Robert is. If any has the chance to come back 100% in a workable time frame, it's Robert.

Griffin is closer to the athlete Peterson is than those he's being compared to. Twitter experts don't hold much credibility in my book. Nothing about RG3 has ever been 'typical' - keep that in mind. I won't be at all surprised if he's our Week 1 starter.

If this were Haynesworth it would be a career ender. Character matters.

I won't be surprised either, but to expect it is dangerous, imo. Just a word of caution, that's all.
