I told myself after the Saints game that I was going to enjoy this year for what it is: a building block with no expectations. If Griff takes us on a run, then hell yeah I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of it. If we fall short, so be it. Next year, the expectations will come, big time.
I hope we make the playoffs, it sure as hell is making this season a LOT more interesting, but I'm not gonna be broken up about it if we don't.
i'd be very happy with 8 - 8 overall.... but i'm not going to lie that it's gonna sting, like it does every year, if i heard the words "the Redskins have been eliminated from playoff contention. Its awesome to see us in contention in december, even if we face an up-hill battle to get to the postseason... we still have a shot.

I never thought of myself as a pessimist, but if you follow me during Game Chat, you all know I am. Ugh! We lost to Carolina. That is why 8-8 would not be enough to satisfy me. Had we beaten that one team we should have crushed, we would not be talking so much about what if...more about we will.

It's about progress. It's about the team getting better every year. Yes.... It's been slower than anyone wants. But with griffin this year, things are starting to come along.
My preseason desire was for griffin to play the last 8 games better than the first. Literally that's all I wanted this year. If that means no playoffs so be it. I just want the team to improve yer after year

Agreed. Although conversely, this team normally has 5 or 6 or more games like that a year. We've had only 2 so far (@pit being the other). Those games were you go 'wtf you didn't even bother to show up this week...'
Hopefully we have no more this year, and none next year

This. With a healthier defense, there is not a doubt in my mind that the Redskins would have won at least two more games, possibly three. Its frustrating in that this team could be so much better...
...however as stated earlier, preseason expectations would leave me happy knowing we've got the whole QB thing sorted out, and better than expected record.
Thing is, every team has a game like that. A game that on paper it had no business losing. If we finish 8-8 it would be due the fact that we only lost one game like that as opposed to the, say, three or four (or five) we usually do.
Honestly we look like a .500 team. We play solid offense and crappy defense and have moments of brilliance followed by moments of mind-numbing incompetence. Closing out the season 5-2, however, would be evidence that the brilliance is starting to win out. And that alone would be a huge imorovement over what we've seen from this team for a long time. Couple that with who our QB is and yes, id be very pleased with 8-8.

But Henry, I am discounting the Pittsburgh, Giants and Rams losses earlier in the season. I am less concerned with Pittsburgh and the Giants...although the Giants was a game we "should" have won even if not on "paper". The Rams game I can live with. Fisher is a good coach, Bradford has shredded our defense a couple of times and Shanahan put the game in our kickers foot instead of relying on the shiny new toy to pull it out at the end.
But, the Carolina game there is no excuse. You guys keep mentioning the 3 or 4 more games we seem to lose when we shouldn't...well, there is 3 more right there that I am less concerned about. The Carolina game? That one stings! If we somehow get close and don't make the playoffs, that is the one game I will look back on and say...there it is!

The scary thing is Marty's team did just that and he was canned.
El, every team is going to lose games. There are two teams in the history of the league that have had a perfect season, plus the colts that lost one game with subs.
So every team is going to have games they lose that they 'shouldn't', on paper or not.
I think the bigger issue is when a team doesn't even look like they showed up, especially in a national TV game or a meaningful game (which tonight is both of those.) Just my opinion though.
I can deal with 2-3 games they lose when they shouldn't - **** happens. As long as the team plays hard.

El, do you really think there were four games on the schedule we easily should have won but didn't? That would mean the Redskins are a 9-2 team in disguise right now. I think those are some mighty high standards there.
Pittsburgh (with Rothelisberger under center) and New York are better than we are. Simple as that. Those are not 'should obviously win' games. Those are 'you never know' games. Like the one coming up tonight. There's a reason we are a 3 point dog to the Giants at home. If you are counting those games as ones we were expected to win and were completely shocked that we lost, well, I want some of what you're smoking.

That's the type of game that an average team wins about half the time, and we didn't win it. It's too bad, but I don't kick myself about it.
No, the Carolina game is the only one where you see the loss and think 'We lost to THOSE guys?' We were huge favorites in that game and if the Natural Order Of Things takes place we win that game by two TDs. We didn't and that sucks, but every team loses a game like that now and then.

That would be a good season because the last few years we drop at least two to Philly/Cleveland/Dallas, get crushed by the other two and we finish 5-11 or 6-10. Not doing that would be a significant sign that this team is heading in the right direction. Playoffs is gravy.

Just giving you a hard time because you are giving me a hard time.
However, if you want me to take that comment seriously, I'd respond by saying that first of all, the circumstances surrounding this team in 2001 and 2012 are completely different. In 2001 we were coming off an 8-8 season, and a 10-6 season before that. The prevailing belief at the time was that the team actually did have some talent, and had no business losing the first five games by a combined score of 32-144. That they recovered to finish respectably was nice, but shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Secondly, Marty wasn't fired for the record. He was fired because either: He wouldn't surrender some of his control over personnel decisions or; because Spurrier became available and Synder wanted him. (take your pick. I'm going with the latter.)
Lastly, firing Marty was colossally stupid.
