Just met a gentleman the other day photographing his home for work. In his basement was his workshop with an array of radio controlled aircraft. I asked him if he flew as well and he confirmed he had a Sesna 4 seater for years. He took up flying when he retired in his late 50's. Just goes to show it's never too late.

Well my favorite hobby/activity is about to take a significant hit.

My Wing Chun Sifu is leaving the state and there isnt another in the same system for hundreds of miles.

At first I was crushed, but I have been personally committing to taking a positive approach to everything in my life going forward and decided to research options.

I decided to try and make this an opportunity rather than detriment.

Last night, I pitched some ideas to him and the rest of the Kwoon (Kung fu's version of "dojo") and they ate it up!

I am now the proud President of a new Charlotte Traditional Kung Fu training club.

We will gather 3 x a week without a sifu and train together.

I am also the single point of contact with our Grand Master (Joe Sayah in Australia) and he and I have negotiated a deal on using a blend of his correspondence course materials, Books and resources from others in our lineage, guest Sifu's, seminars and Skype to round out our training.

This of course, isnt ideal, but with participation and commitment from all of us, I think we may have a working plan.

This is the way many Kung Fu students ended up training eventually (not the modern technology stuff of course!) when their Sifu retired or passed away.

Wish me luck in turning lemons into lemonade!!

Moral to my story, if you love your hobby, dont ever give it up even when it becomes difficult to carry on.

Good lord. My dad has a RCA helicopter and that thing is all sorts of fun. I can't even imagine having all those - those things aren't cheap!




I'll be starting a new hobby tomorrow. I've decided not to (at this time) go to grad school, but i'll be continuing my education on my own via self study and reading books as well as taking classes at coursera (from MIT, Standford, UVA, etc).

We'll see how it goes... I don't really have any cold weather hobbies (other than redskins stuff and working on the house), so hopefully this will fill that void in the year.

I have a newish Hobby to add. My family is embarking on coin collecting. A good friend of mine is passionate about it and always shows me his collection. I love the fact that it is an investment and a hobby.

For Christmas, my daughters each received the 2012 US Mint silver proof sets (minus the eagles, which I will get them for their birthdays). I'm thinking of a focus on the lunar coins (the year of the...ones. The Chinese and Aussy coins are beautiful.

Also, as an investment specifically, I am getting 20 oz tubes of silver rounds or eagles as well, more for fun and **** hits the fan emergency backup than anything else.

I'm so new at it, I'm not even sure I can say its a hobby as much as its an interest. I'm hoping that I'll learn enough to get to full blown hobby status!

I collected coins as a kid. Primarily American coins. Had quite a few rare ones if I remember.

Now that you mention it I should probably go dig up my old collection and see what I've got. I stopped collecting about 25 years ago and some of that stuff was in mint condition. If I find anything interesting I'll let you know.

Restoration and customizing motorcycles, a life long hobby turned into a career as a dealer tech, but still do my side work for the fun and challange.

Photography, photo restoration, colorizing, and custom editing.

Graphics... mainly for shirts, print adds, and web sites.

Pissing people off, which has gone from a hobby to full time job.....

awesome! I actually just ordered a book that is on "getting rich on pocket change". I read that it provides the what to look for details of going through old stashes. There are some cool finds out there

It's a double edged sword to be honest. I love working on bikes, but as a dealer tech, it's more mundane service and repair, less restoration and custom work.

Here is her very first project (She learned on Christmas Eve from youtube vids and asking questions.

Ms. Piggy (Her moniker here) did the same thing for me a couple years back...but she at times she can be impulsive so she crotched me a whole blanket.

Just ordered my youngest daughter's first silver 1 oz coin! She has a birthday approaching next week. I had so much fun looking at all the options she had to begin her collection.

She decided that she wants to collect 1 Oz Silver Australian coins. She will get the 2012 Koala coin next week
