My understanding is that once you've gone through your first set of cuts (which was Monday) then you can just send someone directly to IR, they do not have to pass through waivers

It's the same reason 'Gold Rush' is a hit series. Everybody wants to be that guy who finds the record-breaking nugget or hits the mother lode That, and I think the fact that McD5 has a personal connection - makes it intriguing.

BT, this is a much older thread. And I agree with you on track stars, but Demps was a football player first. Much like Deion, who also lit up the track for Florida State.

The appeal was strong for a few reasons....he can absolutely fly, he happened to be coming out right as the Olympics were happening, and we actually flew two team reps to meet him.

In the end, some combination of factors kept him from being a Skin--for now. Lack of talent/too much money/desire to go to a winner immediately/success of Alfred Morris...it could have been a number of things.

I was particularly excited because I really thought he was sticking to track. When I heard his feelings had changed, I knew we were a top contender for his services.

He may bust out...he may be great. Only time will tell. He's not injured. The Pats are stashing him away for a year, which will give him time to actually learn their plays. Remember, he came in incredibly late...in the middle of preseason. Chad Johnson couldn't even learn their playbook in an entire season.

Also recall that the Giants did this with Victor Cruz.

With the new rules, I don't believe any other team can claim him. It would be funny to see another team pick him up, and start him immediately. That would make the Pats look like even bigger cheaters than they already are. But I don't think it's possible.

He may still find his way to us in the next few years. He may not be Usain Bolt, but for football....he's probably much better. Hence, the appeal is understandable.

As McD5 pointed out to me in our conversations about Demps, we're not talking about a 'track athlete'. That's just an inaccurate label. We're talking about a former college RB with world class speed.

That doesn't guarantee Demps is a future world-changer. But he's not Renaldo Nehemiah or Usain Bolt. He's a very, very fast former college football player.

I didn't think you could stash a guy on IR unless he was legitimately injured. I remember Gibbs doing this back in the 80's but I am certain I read where a rule was put in place preventing it (largely due to Gibbs success with it). Cruz was actually injured his rookie year.

Even though a report yesterday said Patriots running back Jeff Demps was “fine” with a minor knee injury, the team placed him on injured reserve, it was announced Friday night.

If you think that smells fishy, as if they’re trying to stash a developmental player, the line forms behind this guy (Jon Gruden thumbs).

The recently signed Olympic sprinter gave no indications of a serious injury after the preseason finale to any of the reporters who cover the team.

I also remember the league trying to crack down on teams trying to stash players on the IR list for a season. But how can they determine that? Does the league fly down their own set of doctors to perform tests?

And even if a MRI comes back negative, is that proof enough of wrongdoing?

What if the player claims he still just doesn't "feel right.". Unless he comes out in public and says this is a scam, I'm not sure what the league could really do in terms of penalizing the team. But I'd sure like to find out. Maybe he can be coaxed out on twitter...muhahahahah.

I haven't contacted my source yet, but I don't believe the he is seriously injured.

If teams were doing that, wouldn't a player eventually get pissed for being imprisoned on the IR for a whole year, when he himself knows he's not hurt that bad, and then cause an outcry, himself ?

If I recall correctly, we had a player a couple years back placed on IR and wanted to play by late November early December...was a little upset about it.

But the Giants and Pats have been SB rivals over the past several years, so I'd figure that would qualify.

A final update on the Jeff Demps situation that I found educational on a few levels. Seeing as how he isn't a Redskin, we may want to move this thread after.

But first, this may answer a few behind-the-scenes questions about NFL life, and IR.

1. He isn't injured. He did get a ding, but nothing that would keep him off the field for any length of time.

2. The Patriots couldn't stash him on the PS, as they believe he would have been picked up immediately.

3. He is being paid exactly $25,000 per week. Not bad work if you can get it. That equates to $400,000 per year.

4. His contract is for three years. Jeff has the ability to walk, or renegotiate after the second season. His first season will be spent on IR.

5. He is expected to spend most of the season in New England, and not near his home in Florida. He will spend most of his time working out and studying the playbook. The team wants him to add some muscle to increase his durability for a career in football.

6. Surprisingly to me, Jeff is happy with this. In the same situation, I believe I would be angry. But he makes $400k this season, and he gets to play the next. If he has a big year next season, he can then immediately walk to the highest bidder. So he will be playing for a contract next year.

7. One final note. We've all heard about these stories before, and it's sad when they happen. But there is some animosity about how his entry into the league was handled. Jeff let his father be his manager and agent until very recently. Jeff's father, either through inexperience, or through a desire to help himself financially, steered Jeff to a local attorney who was a personal friend. That attorney then became his agent, instead of signing with a more reputable, seasoned name.

That's it. I'll be pulling for him next season, and I hope he has a great one. I expect he will have a new agent by the end of next year, and he may still end up as a Skin when it is all said and done.
