Had Phelps come in and dominated this year, he would have been a legend for many years to come. Names like Ali, Jordan and Betts:p come to mind.

He may cost himself $100 million or more if he can't turn it on later this week.

He won 8 gold medals in one Olympics and is one medal shy of being the all-time leader. Pretty sure his legend is intact.

I hope he does it Lanky. If he falls apart and doesn't medal at all, his rep will take a hit.

He has a chance to be one of the greatest of all-time. He may also end up being a single Olympic hit. Just dominant over a short period of time.

He's been dominant for a decade...he won 6 gold and two bronze medals in Athens, and 8 gold medals in Beijing (not to mention the 20+ gold medals he's won at swimming's world championships over the same time period).

I'm saying he already is one of the greatest of all time!

Something is not right in London. The Chinese women are breaking world records - men's world records with the golds they have won so far. A lot of buzz about it in Olympic Park. Faster than Lochte?

Chinese Olympic controversy? Couldn't be!

Does anyone really think that Phelps not medaling in his first race for a medal matters? I mean Lochte won and that's great but he criticized Phelps for not taking it seriously this Olympics. So what, what more does he have to prove? He will walk away from this Olympics with one more medal and be the all-time leader so what if he doesn't train like Lochte needs to to be as good as he is?

to me it matters in the sense that he's not what he used to be. it also matters (to me) if he didn't medal because he wasn't really trying; i'd rather we put someone up there who will give it their all even if they are less talented than phelps.

it doesn't mean anything to me in the long run, i wont consider him any less of a swimmer. he was incredible in his prime, and is still pretty amazing.

I was thinking about that last night when he placed 4th in the Individual Medley. How many swimmers do we actually have that can do that in the Olympics? I mean, he didn't medal, but an old almost over the hill Phelps nearly won a medal in one of the toughest swimming events...placing 4th. That's not bad.

I just think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion. But, such is sports journalism...or should I say reporting...these days.

Phelps almost single-handedly gave the US the upset victory in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay, and Lochte blew it.

Does that silver make him the most medaled athlete in history? They didn't really talk about it in the coverage I saw.

Isn't it one more?

Yeah, he's tied now. He needs one more to become the most medaled. I was surprised he elected not to do the 200 free since he won that event in team qualifying.

The U.S. is throwing down the gauntlet in gymnastics-let 'em try to catch us.

USA gymnastics women have all but captured the gold. Russia and USA are in the floor routines (final rotation - last two countries battling for the gold) and the Russian girls are falling apart with numerous mistakes down the stretch.

This delay and then spoilers are killimg my enthusiasm to watch in the evenings. I'm all good on the weekends but between here and every other sports site its ruined by the time i get home.

Yea it is pretty bad. I understand wanting to package certain events for prime time, but this is getting ridiculous. I LOVE the Olympics, but I've barely watched the last 2 nights because I already knew everything that was going to happen. I was only able to enjoy watching Saturday night because I was out at the beach all day, but even then I heard about some of the results.

I do commend yahoo for covering spoilers during the day, but it's pretty easy to read in to their article titles/lead ins.

Sorry about that. I'll stop posting results if that is what everyone wants. I keep forgetting that most people are at work and can only glance at updates while others prefer to see it on TV that night.

Naw BB, its fine. You posted the results in the "2012 Summer Olympics" thread...I think its safe to expect spoilers if you open it. Pretty sure Mike was referring to everywhere else; its hard to avoid spoilers unless you stay off the internet altogether.
