Rounds 4-7

I don't mind the picture-it's a reminder of what we don't have to deal with anymore. :)

Recap: So far, we have John Belushi, a back up QB, and a backup linebacker that one day may move into London's spot.

You forgot football Jesus.

And Belushi? Man - that has to stick :)

Walter football draft grades so far:

RG3: A

Leribeus: D

Cousins: D

Robinson: B+

Cousins is not a D.

If Griffin misses time down the road you will have a smart backup that doesn't go out there and throw 3-4 interceptions to lose games.

That may not seem important on a 5-11 team but if Griffin, Garcon and the rest of the talent elevate this team to 9-7, then that depth becomes VERY important.

Yeah - couldn't agree more. That' 'D' for Cousins is based on a superficial glance at RG3 as 'the answer'. You can argue whether or not we needed Cousins there, or that we had more pressing needs, but Cousins was probably one of the best talents available there.

Yeah, I was torn between John Belushi or Artie Lange. :smile2:

'It took a lot of little chocolate donuts to get drafted in the 3rd round...'

Frankly, I give WalterFootball a "C."

At best.

What about Charley Casserly?

"At best, you just drafted a guy that other teams will only get to see in the preseason, in hopes of getting future draft picks. They have too many needs. This pick makes no sense for the Redskins."

Personally, I think it does make a little sense. But an impact player in the forth round to help out RG3 would have made more sense.

some of you guys amuse me.

if the Redskins did not draft a Robinson to backup Fletcher and Riley inside and one of those players got hurt during the season, YOU would be the first guys to scream and complain that this team never develops any depth

Riley was on the bench for a year learning. So what? Now he's starting.

If Robinson sits for a year and then starts to move into a mix with Fletcher on passing downs and eventually replaces him, then the pick is a success.

Stop putting STARTING expectations on 4th and 5th round picks.

To me starters are expected in Round 1 and for most of Round 2.

Starters are a mixed bag with picks in Round 3.

And 'nice to haves' in Rounds 4-7.

How many picks 4-7 become rookie starters in the NFL?

You don't live and succeed betting on that scenario year to year.

Pick coming up soon.

Players still available...

Chris Polk
Marvin Jones
Marvin McNutt
Juron Criner
James Brown
Nick Jean-Baptiste
Markelle Martin

People say Chris Chester is 'fine' going forward. But to me at age 30 and with some questions about his strength at the point of attack, I would lean toward another OG in James Brown here.

Charlie's funny.

After he said that then he said how 4th and 5th rounders have a 25% chance of being starters after 4 years, 6-7 rounders 9%.

Then says at this stage in the draft, you follow your board and take the best talent available, regardless of need.

Charlie's all over the damn place...lol

I thought we'd have gone with Brown but nothing wrong with another fat boy...albeit a thinner fat boy.

Quick blurb about Gettis.

Gettis started full-time for only one year at Iowa after logging just three starts prior to his senior year. He is a severely undersized yet smart and competitive blocker who stood out this year for Iowa as the leader of the line. It will be much more difficult for him to overcome his size deficiencies at the next level; if he can't put on at least 10 to 15 pounds of weight, he could struggle against the league's top interior defensive linemen.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Gettis is quick off the ball and uses his initial explosion as a tactic to overcome size deficiencies. He consistently gets into his man first when pass blocking and is a good overall blocker because of it. He wins with leverage, which is often the only way to gain an advantage on bigger foes. Gettis is very polished in his footwork, and he understands pad and helmet placement's importance in gaining a blocking advantage. His quick feet allow him to be a very mobile and versatile blocker.
WEAKNESSES Gettis is very undersized, and this will force many teams to do a cross-examination of his play. Although he is a big-time player on film, some teams could have issues with drafting a lineman who is well under the average size in the NFL, where in 2011 the average was just more than 300 pounds. Aside from size, Gettis doesn't generate much of a push off the ball into his man and relies heavily on footwork to make effective blocks.

Looks like he'll spend some time in the weight room.

Cousins is an F and frankly only that because there isn't anything lower. It's a pick that at best hedges our bet on RG3 and provides insurance. That upside isn't something worthy of a high grade. The downside however is that it can stir up controversy in a town that loves back up QBs.

What if RG3 is slower that Cousins to get the playbook and looks a little worse in preseason? RG3 still has the higher upside but does the team go meritocracy and hand the reign (and snaps) to cousins or do they keep the guy they invested the most in on the field?

Why risk adding that element to the locker room at all? Terrible pick entirely because it brings more downside than otherwise. The risk outweighs the reward here and this team could really use depth and help in a lot of areas making the decisions to take such a risk all the more difficult to defend.

I love the Gettis pick. He's smallish, but he's another guy with a mean streak, is probably best suited for ZBS, and is known to be motivated and plays up to his competition. I like it...

At least he plays on the line. I'll take that.

141. Adam Gettis, G, Iowa: B- Grade
This is a slight reach, but I like that the Redskins are making an effort to improve the offensive line in front of Robert Griffin and Kirk Cousins. Adam Gettis fits perfectly in Mike Shanahan's blocking scheme. Oh, and it's also hard to hate any pick used on an Iowa lineman.
